On tap during the 2012 Great Pumpkin Festival held at the Cambridge Brewing Company on 10/27/12. Served in a pint glass.
Pours black, with some ruby accents on the edges and topped with a ½ finger of dark mocha head. This maintains some richness on the edges, leaving back a healthy amount of lace. The aroma is roasty, sticky and earthy, with chocolate, brown sugar and light oak notes taking control the most here. This has a nice smooth marriage of base, barrel and bugs to it here in the nose.
The taste is strong with the bourbon barrel, with charred burnt edges that take control of the profile. It however does still leave room for other flavors, with earthy Brett, dark malt sweetness and even a touch of herbaceous qualities making themselves known. Bourbon barrel lingers with some strength in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and crisp up front but then creamier along the back. That nearly 7% ABV is actually pretty well kept in check, with any alcohol feel here coming strictly from the barrel.
Well this was certainly interesting. The nose was much better melded together than the taste was between the beer and barrel and Brett but the taste definitely had some good things going for it as well. I’m not really sure that I actually got the Devil’s Claw addition here, besides a general herbal feel but I was definitely happy with this a Wild Barrel-Aged Stout that packed some attitude. This is exactly the type of innovative beer I look forward too during this fest.
