Tap at armsby abbey

Big creamy darker color foamy head fades slowly lots of lacing pitch black color.

Nose super dark malts, little roast and coffee, lots of smooth chocolate creamy like, bakers choc, caramel, a light sour fruit like twang, little oatmeal bready, little lactose.

Taste starts rich and creamy. Right away a sour berry fruit like taste comes out with a nice tartness. Then more thick creamy malts, lactose, lots of chocolate rich bakers and cocoa nibs even. Little roasted malt, caramel, chewy oatmeal. Finish is more of the sour malts, light tart fruit, sticky malts and chocolate, no real booze.

Mouth is fuller bodied, rich and creamy, decent carb, barely any booze.

Overall quite intersting, lots of choc and tons of dark malts, and that really interesting sour malt tart fruit.

A- pours a very dark brown with no head and no lace, tons of alcohol legs.

S- sour cherries and dark chocolate, raisins and sherry vinegar, dark roast and raspberry.

T- the dark roasty and chocolate flavors work incredibly well with the sour cherry and vinegar aspects of the beer. The combination is rather original and stunningly executed.

O- a beer like this makes it wonder if CBC is one of the two or three best breweries I've had the pleasure of trying.

Appearance: comes in a small 6-8 oz glass due to high alcohol. Black in color with no head.

Smell: alcohol leaps from the glass, along with some oak and big malt and fruit sweetness.

Taste: huge flavor profile here as red wine, oak, licorice, prunes, and some softer chocolate tones are up front, but a mild sourness arrives late. Alcohol is very prevelent here, and is a bit overwhelming.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Smooth throughout with some dryness and alcohol burn late.

Overall: this is a big beer that will last you a long time. Slow sipping and bold, this is not for pairing with any food - the sourness adds a nice touch.

On-tap at CBC
Served into a ~8 oz glass

A: Deep dark jet black body with a thin mocha colored head that settled a bit quickly into a thin ring. Minor lacing here and there, but some noticeable legs on the walls.

S: Huge red wine barrel, cherry sour notes, sweet bourbon, oak, dark chocolate and some dark fruits. Just a touch of alcohol detectable on the end.

T: A wash of sour black cherry coats the mouth, followed by all of the barrel character. Dry red wine and sweet full bourbon flavors, along with their wood counterparts are mid-palate. Roast, bitter chocolate and some sweeter red fruits are on the back end. The sour character cuts the alcohol notes nicely, wonderfully complex.

M: Smooth, edging just below a viscous full-bodied beer but close. A bit of a dryness you'd get from some wine tannins in the linger, but the carbonation does a nice job of breaking everything up.

Wow. At 15% ABV, a soured dark ale aged in red wine and bourbon barrels, this was awesome. I had fully expected the alcohol to take hold of everything but it couldn't be further from the truth. Very impressed. I ordered multiples.
