On cask, via hand pump, @ the Cambridge Brewing Company (Cambridge, MA) on 10/29/11 during their 4th Annual Great Pumpkin Festival. Served in a pint glass.
The beer program describes this as a rich Irish Stout infused with a molé blend of spicy ancho and chipotle peppers, cacao nibs, and cinnamon sticks, and more.
Pours pitch black in the glass, with rich head of mocha colored frothiness. This stays robust from that cask pour, leaving back a ton of foamy lace down the sides of the glass. The aroma smells of pepper, cinnamon, cocoa, light roast and some greenness that is coming out along the back. It’s coming off more like citric hops but there could be some more of an earthy pumpkin greenness to this as well. The spices really add a nice airiness to this in the nose.
The spices sit up front in the taste, before giving away to a smooth roasted chocolate sweetness. That same green feel from the nose really shines here and adds a somewhat refreshing crispness to the profile. This finishes dry and spicy but neither aspect is overdone. The mouthfeel is lighter bodied; with a pleasant mellow creaminess that keeps this flowing nice and easy in the mouth. There is just an effortless drinkability to this.
This was quite tasty and one of my favorites from the fest. There was a lot of flavor and complexity packed into its smallish 4% body here but the cask pull really helped drive this one home. I’ve had some pepper beers that really go overboard but this one got it just right. I could have drank this beer all day and gone home a happy camper.
