This ale is bold, hoppy, and complex with chocolate and roasted malts adding a full malty character. The strong American hops balance the beer with an aggressive bitterness, followed by a fruity hop flavor and a full hop aroma. We use Nugget and Amarillo hops, and it is dry hopped with Falconers Flight.

Had this on-tap at Sunswick 35/35 in Astoria, NY in Feb '13.
Review taken from notes.
This beer pours a slightly hazy dark brown color. It has a little more than a finger of thick white foam resting on top. The head has pretty good retention, and leaves some good lace behind clinging to the glass. The nose starts off with a good amount of roasted malt. There is a pretty big hop presence here which is nice. Also, I am getting some dark fruit and toffee aromas. The taste starts off much like the nose, witch a good amount of roasted malt. There are some dark fruit flavors, as well as some toffee and a little bit of chocolate. A good amount of hop flavor and bitterness is also present, and it sticks to the palate throughout the finish, as does the roasted malt flavor, and a touch of alcohol flavor. This has a medium body and a nice smooth feel. There is some roasted malt bitterness as well as some bitterness from the hops. Also, there is a decent amount of sweetness, and a little bit of boozy warmth on the back end. There is good drinkability here. It goes down easy and has good flavor. Overall, I thought this was a pretty nice beer. I wouldn't have a problem having a few of this in a night, and I would buy again.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown body, with little head but with lots of lace dots. a good hop aroma. Above average carbonation. Chocolate malt . Decent bitterness and good drinkability. Some hop aromas. Hits the style and worth brewing although the Stone's of the industry overwhelm the style grades.

purchased & consumed at Empire Brewing.
This is a beautiful looking but overly bitter ale.
A - dark copper/amber; clar with highlights under light. off-white head
M - as expected
T - hops + malt; faint alcohol. Bitter (too much so) finish with a hoppy (Cascade?) aftertaste.
S - primarily hops with detectable alcohol.

The beer pours a hazy dark brown color with a thick frothy offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a solid roasted and crystal malt scent along with a very bitter hop nose. It has some burnt toffee character from an extended boil. The taste is good as well. It has a smooth, hoppy flavor that goes down easy and finishes warm with some burnt toffee flavor. It has a good malt bill with some excellent roasted notes. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is an outstanding effort from these guys. I hope they keep cranking out the good stuff. Well done.
