At a Brooklyn beer event in October of 2014, 5 friends decided to join forces in a unique beer collaboration by beer industry women. The brew was so successful that the tradition has continued each year since! This imperial stout is brewed and fermented with cocoa nibs and a special chili blend, giving it a tantalizing chocolate aroma, and flavor with a heat that creeps onto the palate and builds into a beautiful balance of sweetness and spice.

This dry stout has the promise of heat, with very little delivery. The chocolate-chilli combo is the star of many a Mexican hot chocolate, but the flavors are far too subtle here to stand out. What's left is a boozy stout with average viscosity, an mild chocolaty nose and very little heat.

As I understand, this beer was reincarnated in late 2016 as a collaboration brew between Empire's Tim Butler and a group of leading ladies in the beer world. It makes me glad to see a story like this around a beer, but this wasn't the best stout ever created. The "sweet" was a little low and the "fire" lived in the after taste. It was mild heat, which I prefer. Thickness and head were on par for a good stout, but flavor didn't seem to perfectly align with the name.

This does not change my high regard for Tim Butler and the Empire crew. They make excellent beer. This one-off was just a little off for my palette.
