Appearance: clear, reddish copper body; about a 1.5 finger head, fairly thick and white
Smell: spicy, floral hop aroma; orange and cinnamon
Taste: lightly sweet malt flavor up front and then takes on a strange bitter/phenol finish; alcohol warmth fairly noticeable
Mouthfeel: light to medium body; average carbonation
Overall: a strange holiday beer that just doesn't cut it. Nothing seems to have melded together well, and the metallic and phenol-like taste at the finish leaves one wondering what this beer could have been if everything would have come together. This sure ain't any where near being like any brown ale I've tasted over the years. Had to pour this one down the drain after half a bomber bottle. Haven't done that in ages.

A: This poured a muddy light mahogany with lots of tan head.
S: It smelled like Belgian yeast and floral hops and copper, with some dry cocoa powder and brown sugar and a bit of oak.
T: It tasted like sour Belgian yeast and copper hops, with some dry cocoa powder and earthy caramel and lemon grass. It had a metallic and very dry aftertaste that wasn't entirely clean.
M: It was thick and oily with moderate carbonation. Very full.
D: This was not at all what I expected. Half way between a Flanders Red and American Red ales, but nothing like an oaked brown ale. Scent and taste weren't bad, but they seemed muddled and poorly integrated. Very nice body though, with well hidden alcohol, so it wasn't difficult to drink. Interesting to try once, but ultimately not that great a beer.

High & Mighty Home for the Holidays, bomber bought at Whole Foods Bowery for $5.99 (on sale, save $2).
Appearance: Served in my Sierra snifter, it comes out with Belgian-style heavy carbonation and a voluptuous, foamy two-finger head that lingers. Retention is very good, as is carbonation and lacing. Color is auburn-brown, very hazy and thick, almost like grape juice/puree. Rusty too, like some of the steel mills of the Ohio Valley.
Smell: Very Belgian-y, sugar, raisin, creme brulee, sweetness, dark fruit. Caramel and toasted brioche with a hint of of savoriness. Spice. Some metalic (but not unpleasant) overtones. Wish the oak were more present (or present at all).
Taste: This really reminds me of a Belgian ale, mostly Ommegang Abbey Ale. I cannot see this as a "brown ale". Not very roasty or hoppy, but definitely fruity and sweet. Some sourness and lots of dry spice. Yeast all around (later I read on the brewery's website that this is brewed with a "Trappist yeast"). It makes sense.
Mouthfeel: Excellent! Well rounded, full body, full flavor, full heavy carbonation. A little prickly and spicy at the end of the sip, with a dry and lingering finish.
Overall: I like this beer because it is 7% but tastes like 9% or 10%. I like it because it surprises you, in a good way. It is also very, very drinkable, with the alcohol well-hidden and under control. Just a very nice, well made brew I would drink again. Yes, the oak is almost nonexistent to me, and sure, this is not really a brown ale, but other than that, I cannot understand why this is deemed only "worthy" on BA. As a "winter ale", it sure does work, even at the beginning of spring when I drank it!
Last but not least: when you drink this, you are giving to charity, as "profits from the sale of this product will be donated to Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans of America".

The label differs from the one pictured and reads "oak-aged winter ale". 22 oz. Bomber into my Sammy Smith's imperial pint.
Pours with a large tan head & the beer is a dark, hazy red when held to the light. Only a faint spice & woodsy aroma, with some yeastiness in there as well. I get a little more spice in the flavor, and when I took the first few sips, the alcohol overpowered everything else. As it warmed though, it became more balanced. Body is medium & partially because of that, its very drinkable. Overall, an ok brown & I like the spice, just wish there was more of it. Not a bad take on a winter though, by any means.

Pours a deep reddish orange color with a fluffy/bubbly off white head that recedes quickly. Smells of toffee, biscuit, light oak, a fruity tartness seems a bit out of place. Taste is toffee, caramel, biscuit, light oak, and the beginning of a lactic infection. Medium body, sticky syrupy mouthfeel, moderate to high level of carbonation. Not a drain pour, but could have been so much better.

Poured a 3" head with took a while to dissipate to a trace. Russet brown color. Smell reminds me of barleywine. Taste was slow to open up at first initially have mild hops and rye but later expression a light sweetness with coffee and chocolate. And there's a decent zing pervasive in this beer, sort of an acidity. A solid beer, doesn't blow me away, but yet I'd enjoy it any time.

A: copper brown color, nice rocky head
S: unusual nose, slight infection(?) and or just very yeasty - not what I expected, no barrel aging noticeable
T: sharp taste from yeast or infection from contamination - an unusual beer - doesn't seem true to type for brown and barrel aging isn't noticeable - reminds me more of a Belgian triple with yeasty qualities
M: OK but very yeasty
D: OK but not true to type

Pours a murky brown color with a big tan head. Head falls to a very small one. Decent lace.
Interesting aroma. It must be the oak but it reminds me of a saison.
Sweet malts with plenty of oak. Hops are there too in the bitter finish.
Medium bodied in the mouth and a bit biting.
Good enough and nice to drink.

Had a good amount of this one at a holiday party/tasting last night. Prior to the party, I had not heard of either this beer, or for that matter, this brewery. That said, I enjoyed it. Poured a fairly clear, medium brown color with a decent light brown head. Aromas of light wood, molasses and roasted nuts. Medium bodied and very drinkable, with flavors of wood, nuts, milk chocolate and brown sugar.

Stored in the refrigerator since December of 2009.
Appearance: Nice frothy 2-inch head that soon settled down to a thin lacing. Brown-darker amber in color.
Smell: Molasses, Nutmeg, and Buttery toffee scents.
Taste & Mouthfeel: Deep and hearty mouthfeel upfront that mellows down to medium body. Spicy, dry-roasted nut and wood flavor along with a slight metallic flavor in the middle. Has a mild buttered popcorn flavor near the end. Nutty mouth-numbing flavor in the aftertaste.
Drinkability: Nice variation on a brown/winter ale. Very good as a end of meal drink or something to drink next to the fire on a cold night. Nice.

pours a touch lighter than expected with a tan colored head that barely rises to two fingers, quickly settles to half that and leaves some spotty lacing.
nutty, spicy, almost has a belgian yeast aroma with just a touch of oak.
smooth brown ale qualities of roasted nuts, milk chocolate, toffee and caramel. that yeast seems to add a bit of spiciness that comes through after the swallow and lingers for a bit. kinda odd. very little discernible oak character, i think it smooths things out a bit though.
medium bodied and light carbonation work well for the style, but there is a syrupy feel that isn't quite ideal for me.
not bad. a bit boozy for the ABV. tasty, but not overly so. would drink again, but money is probably spent better elsewhere. would like a bit more oak character and that odd yeasty/spiciness harnessed a bit, not that spices are bad, especially in a winter seasonal, but the oddness is a bit detrimental.

A- Dark brown body with an airy, off-white head that dissipates rapidly
S- Toasty dark malts, not a whole lot going on, but nothing offensive
T- Malts and spices up front, moving into dark malts that are belgian-like to me
M- Medium bodied, good carbonation. Smooth and some warming from the alcohol
D- I am pretty impressed with the take on the brown ale. Spices make it very holiday-ish and I enjoy that

22 picked up at the COOP sometime last week... poured into my Delirium snifter with an okay lite tan head... the brew is amber.
Really.. the nose seems a bit flaccid.. some orange peel and minor spicing seems too much for a lacking base beer... pretty phenolic.. burnt plastic and burnt peppercorns.
The flavor is better but not by much... again some yeasty phenols that make me think "antiseptic".. oaky tannins are a bit astringent and too heavy for what is in my glass... the spices finish dry because there just isn't enough fun left.
Body is a lite medium with a heavy handed carbonation... Overall, this bottle is okay, and I'm being very generous... nothing good to say really... sorry.

Had this from a 22oz into an imperial pint glass. The head is a nice fluffy two fingers white head. The color is deep rust color, cloudy/hazy with a bit of orange around the edges. The nose is of slight brett aroma, almost like an american wild ale. the flavor is much more like a wild ale to me. There is some spices in there and then a slight tartness that reminds me of a wild ale. The body is full and carbonation is good. I will definately pick up another.

Well, it's officially November here in the Great Midwest despite our long, lingering autumn that refuses to die, so it's time to crank up the fireplace (done) & crack open a holiday beer (done). Now all that's left is the drinkin'.
Pours more amber than the brown advertised on the bottle, but perhaps my rods or cones or something are malfunctioning. But it looks like beer, & that's good. Smells nice, malty, almost woody, with spices that refuse to show ID. Probably fraudulent voters.
Home for the Holidays brings the standard nutty, malty, brownish, with spicy accents. Underneath it all is caramel, & something else that doesn't agree with my palate. This is my second High & Mighty & it might be the yeast, water, or whatnot, but it rubs my tongue the wrong way with light steel wool. There's an almost saison-like musty undertone that I'm not digging. It undermines the other qualities of the beer. I'd think it was just me but my wife wants to pour hers. Sadly, I concur.

A- Pours a dark brownish color with a thin off-white head that quickly disappears.
S- The aroma is toasted malts with hints of chocolate, caramel and a touch of oak.
T- The taste is malty up front with some nuttiness, spice and dark fruits.
M- The mouthfeel is between light and medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.
D- Overall, Home for the Holidays is a decent brown ale but nothing I would purchase again. Worth a try.
