Purchased a 625 ml bottle at the local liquor store

Upon opening this beer, i got a huge whiff of blueberry in my face, which made me really happy. It smelled fantastic, like real blueberries. It poured wonderfully, with 1.5 fingers of off white creamy head that dissipated pretty quickly.

Sadly, for me, that is where the goodness ended. This beer had very little of that delicious blueberry smell, and was just not my cup of tea. I thought it was terribly balanced, and really fought to finish the bottle.

Glad i picked it up to try, but i will be avoiding this one from now on.

Found at My Place in Newtown, CT this one is a thick black brown color with a decent tan head and very nice lacing. The aroma has a beautiful blueberry chocolate malt theme that is luscious with an impression of some lemony hop mixed in for good measure! Very nice. The flavor brings along an even bolder blueberry malt with deep berry sweetness and beautiful chocolate malt. I get a bit of a medicinal, Dr. Pepper mintiness and generally I find this to be a delicious concoction. Unusual perhaps but a beautiful and natural fruit combo in my book. The body is medium with modest but adequate carbonation for a somewhat resinous and luxurious feel. A definite hit for me, perhaps the best Shipyard I’ve had yet!

Pours an inky black with violet edges to the glass when held up to the light. Minimal coffee coloured head has good retention and laces nicely. Mouthfeel is slick, with a marked alcohol burn at the finish.

At opening the bottle's aroma was overwhelmingly "blueberry-forward", but roasted malts become more obvious now that the beer has opened up. Although the fruit is present throughout all aspects of the taste, there are elements of chocolate and vanilla in there as well which complement it nicely. A surprisingly dry finish, with a pleasantly lingering bitterness.

Although the high ABV will make this only an occasional treat, a beer I'm glad to have tried and would recommend to other stout drinkers.

Bottle from the LCBO, 625ml into a tulip.

Midnight blue.black with a tan head of a couple fingers. Great retention and lacing. Nose has a load of blueberry pancakes/muffins, a bit of chocolate. Sweet but the blueberry notes become a bit more artificial once the beer opens up. Still quite aromatic nonetheless. Taste has more blueberries, a little softer, more chocolate and darker sweet malt flavours. Sweet fruity finish, just a smidgen of alcohol. Medium full body and light lingering roast. My first foray with a blueberry flavoured beer, and I'm quite impressed - quite a good drink.

Poured dark brown with a finger of khaki head. Big, sweet aroma of blueberries and a touch of vanilla.

Moderate carbonation and a thick, full mouthfeel. Tastes like a chocolate-covered blueberry with some roasty caramel and vanilla in the background.

Touch of alcohol warmth on the finish. Fun brew, but the blueberry element becomes overpowering and somewhat artificial-tasting after a while and I couldn't quite finish my glass.

Drank on-tap at Yard House, Boston, MA
Served in a cervoise

Dark brown/black in appearance. The liquid was topped by an enormous, frothy, bubbly, cocoa colored crown that slowly fell to a lasting film.

Just as I had hoped, the aroma was dominated by blueberries. Sweet and rich, like blueberry pie filling. Touch of roasted malts. Hint of vanilla. Some chocolate and coffee notes came through as well.

The flavor profile was unique. Perhaps not quite as blueberry forward as the nose, yet balanced and flavorful. Sweet caramel and roasted malts appeared up front. Blueberry notes came through in the center. Chocolate and coffee appeared as well. Touch of lactose-like sweetness. The finish was moderately dry and roasty. Slightly bitter, with just a touch of hops. At 9% ABV, I was astonished by how well this beer masked its alcohol strength.

The mouthfeel felt a bit thin and over carbonated initially. As the beer sat and the carbonation settled down, the liquid turned smoother and creamier.

I am usually disappointed by Shipyard's beers but this one was definitely quite interesting. I will have to seek out the other beers in their Pugsley's Signature Series.

Poured into a Founders snifter glass. Dark brown in color with a thin brown head that dies down to a thin line of soapy bubbles. Sweet roasted malt, chocolate and blueberry pie filling aroma. The initial taste is sweet roasted malt and toffee with a lactose sweetness to it. This mixes with a blueberry flavor that is kept in check. The alcohol warmth and hop bitterness show up a little in the finish along with a lingering roasted malt and slight blueberry flavor. Feel is medium bodied and smooth. The underlying Porter/Scotch ale mixes well with the blueberry flavor.

Pours a big head, which leaves a slightly tan-orange film and lace. Very dark in colour, dark-brown to black with maybe a slight purple tinge.

Aroma is of strong blueberry cobbler with a light spice edge to it. Also notes of roast coffee, chocolate. Alcohol esters are also present.

Taste is initially of dry blueberry flavour and thick caramel malt, achieves a nice balance. Not too sweet, with a bit of cinnamon/clove spice. Malt maintains a good presence, hop bitterness comes a bit more toward the end, leading to a finish which has dried blueberries, toasted malt and strong bitterness.

Mouthfeel are a pleasant carbonation. Malt combines for a nice balanced bitter feel. Alcohol is well hidden and quite drinkable, the body is medium-full. Seems to work.

Interesting stuff. Wasn't 100% what to expect. It keeps a strong bitterness and strong ale maltiness. It grows on you. Blueberries have a strong presence, particularly on the nose, but don't completely overpower the ale. Also not too sweet, more a dry bitter maltiness. This style is touch and go, but they've done a good job with this one, worth a try.

You bet I got Blueberry smashed in a nonic pint glass.

Appearance- This Shipyard brew pours like a Coca-Cola, dark brown and slick. Thankfully, not a furious torrent of fizzy bubbles. I'm impressed by the black body, with only the tiniest sliver of ruby highlights.

The foam looks smooth and frothy, with about a half-finger in width. The color is still that dark cola brown. It is retaining well after many sips.

Smell- I get some notes of caramel malt and a little bit of alcohol heat. Everything else is blueberry! Not an actual blueberry, but certainly more like a blueberry pie filling. I am still impressed that it is so distinct.

Taste- It starts to fall off just a little on the palate. As the drink starts, I get some coffee roast, a little burnt, and a bit of dark chocolate.

Then comes some alcohol heat that is not exactly out of place, much like what you would find in a strong and peaty wee heavy. Blueberry? Well, there is a little bit there, but it comes out REALLY strong in the finish.

I wonder for a second if I had been eating blueberry pie while drinking this beer.

Mouth feel- I like the feel. I don't love it, but I like it. The beer fills up the mouth with a nice medium body. However, I would like a little more stick and a slightly smoother feel at the back of the throat.

Overall- This is the best blueberry stout I have had. Is there room to put even MORE blueberry in this beer? Certainly. The nose could have a little more, and the palate could back off on the heat to let the fruit come through.

As it is, I definitely enjoyed this beer, and would seek it out again. Next stop six packs? Make it so Shipyard. Make it so.

Pours dark brown with a minimal beige head and little lacing.

I can smell the blueberries from several feet away. Smells like a fresh blueberry cobbler with a little roasted malt.

Strong blueberry flavor as well. A little bit of roasted malt along with it, but the fruit is prevalent.

Light mouthfeel with medium carbonation. This could use a bit more thickness.

Blueberry tastes like it's slightly artificial, but this is one of the few blueberry beers I've had that actually tastes distinctly like blueberries. Not world class, but still an enjoyable beer.

Despised 22oz bottle poured into 10oz goblet. Poured a very dark brown, almost black, color with about a half-inch of tan head that had OK retention and lacing that also featured lots of clinging bubbles on the side of the glass.

The aroma was dominated at first by a huge blueberry blast. After a few moments some light grain showed through, along with a bit of roast. The taste was pretty much the same, with the sweetness of the berries overpowering everything else. Good thing I like like blueberries. In addition, there was a noticeable alcohol taste and the roast aspect was also much bolder.

The body was good, solid without being heavy or sticky. Drinkability was OK for a sweet, 9%ABV brew. Overall, a good, but not great, brew. Worth checking out due to a low price at Trader Joes.

625 mL bottle from the LCBO. About a month ago I split a bottle of this with a friend, and we both agreed it was one of the best fruit beers we'd ever had. I wasn't sure when I'd see it again though, so I went out of my way to procure this bottle for review purposes.

Pours an opaque brownish-black colour, with deep red highlights next to the light - reminds me of blueberry pancake syrup. Topped with one finger of smooth, dense tan-coloured head that wilts away over a period of minutes, leaving behind a wispy film and thin collar. Not much lacing. The aroma is rich and intense, with heaps of roasted malts, tart blueberries, as well as some chocolate, espresso, blackcurrant and some booziness. Easily one of the best-smelling glasses of beer I've ever had.

The flavour is no less rich and luxurious than the nose - though the alcohol is perhaps a more significant factor. The heat actually works quite well with the backbone of burnt, roasted malts, coffee beans and the ever-present blueberry flavour - which is neither overbearing and obnoxious, nor half-heartedly weak. Dark chocolate and earthy, herbal hop notes become more prominent toward the finish. Some ethanol heat lingers into the aftertaste, alongside roasted malts and some light tartness. Medium-bodied, with some syrupy thickness, and restrained carbonation that keeps the mouthfeel fairly crisp. I could probably drink this fairly quickly, but at 9% I'd rather just sip it slowly.

Nearly every time I review a fruit beer, I mention that I am not a big fan of the style, mostly because of their tendency to be fizzy, one-dimensional, poorly integrated, and just not very beer-like in general. This one does not fit any of those stereotypes. The blueberry flavour (despite the fact that it is clearly an extract) is an absolutely perfect match for the underlying brew itself (which the label describes as a porter/scotch ale hybrid), and everything blends together virtually flawlessly.

Final Grade: 4.38, a brown-nosing A grade. Coming from someone who has never been very enthusiastic about fruit beer OR high abv beers in general - Shipyard Smashed Blueberry is really worth trying. This is an amazing fruit beer that is well worth the relatively high price (at least in this market). I might save another bottle and crack it open after Thanksgiving dinner - hopefully the LCBO will bring back the Smashed Pumpkin this fall too! Either one would be perfect as a dessert pairing.

I was skeptical but this. beer. is. marvelous. And I normally don't like fruit beer (though this doesn't have that fruit beer character anyway).

A: Pours black with red/light brown edges when held up to the light. Khaki head that starts out about two fingers in a tulip glass and goes down at a moderate pace, some alcohol legs, little lacing.

S: Blueberry up front, but a tart real blueberry, not blueberry flavoring. You also get bready malts and a little bitterness. A little tobacco, not much.

T: What a complex beer. Blueberry sweetness up front, but again it is that tart real blueberry kind. It's more like blueberry skins if that makes sense. Follows with toasty malts. Some dark chocolate/black coffee bitterness on the finish.

M: Full bodied, not too boozy feeling for 9%. Smooth, but also has enough carbonation to cleanse the palate.

O: This is an awesome beer. Maybe I think it's so awesome because I expected it to not be...but I think it's because it's just AWESOME. Unique, complex, rich. Very nice, Shipyard. This is a perfect dessert beer.

A - Cola body with ruby red highlights. Khaki head with ok retention and lace.

S - Huge nose full of chocolate covered blueberries and oatmeal. Great fruit character. Nice touch of booze on the backend.

T - Fantastic profile. Caramel malt, hot chocolate with blueberries, and warm booze pave the way for escalating wave of fresh blueberry flavor.

M - Medium/light body. The booze is a touch sharp, but not bad.

O - Stellar brew. Definitely the best blueberry dark beer I've had, and maybe even the best blueberry beer I've had in general.

Bought a bomber of this for $6.99 when back home in CT.. not sure why people are complaining about the price. Anyways, if you're buying this expecting a fruity beer, think again. Pours a jet black color, boozy smell. This is a porter first and foremost, with a touch of blueberry. I thought the flavors went together very well, but this one will sneak up on you for sure.. and its definitely a sipper. Tasty and worthy trying for sure if you can get your hands on it.

[Best served in Nonic Pint glass]

The pour was a thick pitch black with a huge (3-4 finger) light/medium brown creamy head that lasted throughout and produced some seriously excellent sheeting of lacing which totally engulfed the glass.

The aroma was a tad sweet and had a strong blueberry presence along with some roasted chocolate malts and a sweet doughy yeast with hints of milk chocolate and roasted coffee.

The taste was extremely malty and a bit sweet with the blueberry presence right up front and then progressed into a mild bitter taste with notes of coffee and chocolate (which fought for dominance with the blueberry) before having a mildly sweet finish. The flavor lasted a very long time after the swallow with a nice bitter sweet blueberry chocolate taste, which lead up to a slight alcohol warming sensation at the end.

Mouthfeel was a bit beyond medium in body with a creamy dry texture and a soft carbonation.

Overall a brew which has a mild battle of flavors fighting on the taste buds, eventually neither wins and they wind up blending in a superb fashion creating a fantastic explosion of flavor that leaves you wanting more...

Bottle to Founders tulip.

A - Poured very dark brown. A small layer of light brown head formed and quickly receded to a ring around the glass.

S - Big fresh blueberry jam aroma up front along with roasted malts and lighter chocolate aromas.

T - Blueberry up front that gives way to roasted malts and sweet chocolate. Very tart throughout which is necessary to cut through the sweet blueberry jam. A very good balance of the blueberry with the base beer (porter) flavours.

M - Medium body with a slight chew. Low carbonation.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a snifter.

Here we go, the most highly rated Shipyard beer. I tend to like fruit beers, so let's see if they can impress me here. It pours out a very dark brown with a tiny head. The aroma has a nice amount of blueberries over roasted malt. The taste is rather interesting. It comes on with roasted malts reminiscant of a scotch ale, then there's a bit of alcohol burn that fades into a long finish of semi-sweet chocolate and blueberries. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and syrupy, and the drinkability is decent. Overall, this is a solid and different take on the fruit beer. It's not exceptional, but it's something different.

Bottle into pint. No date, was purchased at the LCBO for their summer 2012 release.

A- Dark, murky brown pour with a half finger off white head. Lacing is okay.

S- Popped the cap and got a huge whiff of grape jelly and blueberry smoothies. After a bit there is a nice fresh blueberry aroma, followed by dark chocolate, slightly burnt coffee, vanilla, brown sugar and caramel.

T- Dark roasted coffee and blueberry, brown sugar, coffee and bakers chocolate. Definite scotch ale characteristics in there. Very delicious.

M- Medium bodied, good carbonation, slightly sticky on the lips.

O- I didn't know what to expect with this one. I'm at the point now where I'll basically try anything, I'm really glad I got this. Might get another one or two.

Smashed Blueberry looks pretty intimidating for a fruit beer; it's so dark that even Darth Vader should be shaking, let alone the typical fruit beer drinker! It's impossible to know how much color the blueberries lent since the beer is so black and opaque. Even its head, which is thick and abundant, has a dark tint.

A spritz of blueberry came from just prying open the cap. Once settled in the glass the blueberry aroma grows to giant proportions and is accompanied by a roasty coffee-and-cream flavor. There are also other fruits present: dates, currants and prune. Alcohol isn't noticed outright but the beer's strength is impressed immediately.

Smashed Blueberry drinks like a specialty coffee; it must make an excellent after-dinner tipple. The flavor of blueberry is wonderfully pronounced (sometimes resembling blackberry) and mixes lovely with the coffee-and-cream backdrop. Despite the roastiness, blueberry tea also comes to mind (due to a good dollop of earthy hops).

We think of fruit beers as summer quenchers, but this offering is better suited to damp, chilly evenings. It is warming, bittersweet and heavy. Sweetness is derived more so from caramelized malts than the fruit (although the extract becomes saccharine). Hoppy floral hints resembling heather or juniper factor in before a sooty dark chocolate finish.

Smashed Blueberry may be the only beer with saccharine fruit extract that isn't likely to appeal to a mainstream audience. There's enough roasted malt and alcohol to overwhelm casual drinkers. There might also be enough porter-like qualities to force those who dismiss all fruit beers as pedestrian to reevaluate their stance. An interesting brew.

This beer is delicious! Some people don't like fruity beer, but if you tend to be skeptical, you should let down your guard and give this one a go! It has a deep brown/midnight blue color that is complimented nicely by both the smell and taste. The aroma is sweet and pleasant to the palette. As you begin to drink, you will taste a sweet creamy liquid that is not overpowered by the blueberry in the least. It has a little bit of a tart finish, but at 9% ABV, this beer is a must try! Highly recommend.

Poured into a lipped pint glass from a bottle.

The scent is heavy. A huge mixture of roasted malt & blueberry, though I feel that the berry is overpowered.

The flavor is also very heavy. It's not very hoppy, but there is a bitterness here that cuts through the sweetness. I think that probably belongs to the heavily roasted malt, which also creates the color of the beer, more stoutish than anything else. There is also a coffee note in here, though it's more of that dark chocolate style. This would be awesome with dessert.

Mouthfeel is more bubbly than I'd expect, but it's nothing horrible. Also, the alcohol is almost undetectable. Almost. There is a slightly burn every few sips, which is almost unenjoyable.

Overall, this beer is a pretty great entry into the realm of fruit beers, but I wish there was more fruitiness, less roast.

Bomber from the Conestoga LCBO, enjoyed on a muggy afternoon with chocolate and fruit dessert. Label says this is in the porter style with some scotch ale characteristics as well.

Poured into my Duvel tulip. Dark chocolate in colour with chestnut around the edges. Decent head of foam, recedes into a thick ring. Some lacing. Nice looking porter, actually.

As soon as the bottle was opened, from about a foot away I got a potent whiff of blueberry pie - quite inviting. As my nose became accustomed to the blueberry blast, I was able to pick out semi-sweet chocolate and a bit of woodsiness.

I've long said that fruit beers always sound much better than they turn out to be, but I think I've finally found the exception. This brew really was quite enjoyable. The porter/scotch ale base was very nice, boasting some dark chocolate, oak/wood and cream flavors, while the blueberry flavor - while certainly potent - did not dominate the beer, save for in the aftertaste. The high ABV is well hidden - I would have put this at 6 or 7 tops if I hadn't already read the label. Creamy feel, thick bodied (!) and with light carbonation.

This is a great fruit beer because of two things. First, the two parts (fruit flavor and beer base) are done well and could survive on their own. Secondly, the fruit flavor accentuates the brew rather than overpower it, clash with it or be so faint as to fade into nothingness. Certainly worth a try.

22oz bottle served in a SA 'perfect pint' glass.

pours a dark brown/mahogany tone with orange highlights; yields just shy of a 1" head. good retention and lacing, slowly fades to a thin cap, collar around the glass. the label reads that the beer is a cross between a porter and a scotch ale, but the nose is dominated by blueberries. not unpleasant at all, just more one-dimensional than i was expecting. maybe a little roasted malt in the background.

taste opens up to the flavors i was anticipating. very unique flavor profile: interesting and flavorful balance between the roastiness and chocolate of the stout, the scotch character, and the blueberry. some bitter hoppiness and a boozy presence evident in the finish... medium-full bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation.

overall, i'm halfway through the bomber and still can't determine whether i'm enjoying the thing. well made and definitely outside the box, but i'm having trouble deciding whether if the flavor profile necessarily works for me. in the final analysis i would say that it does, with the caveat that it's limited to small doses.
