Shipyard Smashed Blueberry
Pugsley's Signature Series
22 oz brown bottle
Served in a 20 oz tulip glass
* 4th of July Weekend 2011 *
Pours a deep chestnut brown with a khaki colored head. The bottom of the glass appears more of a ruby color. A nice looking head forms on top with significant lacings.
Pleasant aroma with whiffs of malt and freshly baked sugar cookies with a blueberry fragrance.
A chewy malt backbone is evident from the start with chocolate notes. There is a buttery, Werther's Original flavor as well. Must be the Shipyard yeast. This flavor is controlled and adds to the beer. The sip finishes with a blueberry puree that has a sweet & tart quality. There is a nice hop snap on the finish too.
This is really interesting, I don't think I've ever had a Porter/Scotch Ale with a prominent fruit presence. I had this beer yesterday on tap at Fat Cat (Quincy, MA) for the first time and really enjoyed it.
An extremely smooth and drinkable beer. This 9% ABV is ridiculously well hidden. An interesting offering from Shipyard and way better than I was expecting.

22oz. bottle poured into a tumbler glass.
A- a very dark brown, little light gets through, with a nice dense tan head. Head does dissipate fairly quickly.
S- some cocoa, blueberry, and candy sugar. Boozy, and overly sweet.
T- a big boozy mess. You would think that chocolate and blueberry would work, but it just doesn't. Overly sweet, with an aggressive bitterness on the back end to try and tame it. Nothing melds together, and nothing works about this beer.
M- Fairly thin for as dark as it is, a bit dry and almost metallic on the back.
O- Had high hopes for this, which were quickly crushed.
