Peach amber color with nice clarity. Lovely color. Inch of foamy topper. Great lacing.

Very resinous aroma. Dank pine, citrus (orange), and toffee sweetness. The malts get their share. Notes of caramel brittle, mild chocolate, and faint apple.

Drinks thinner on flavor, thicker with booziness, yet still bursting with oily dank hoppiness and the big bitterness levels that come with the territory. Somewhat less-sweet toffee and more mild chocolate comprise the malt offering. Lots of pine and citrus dominate. Grapefruit and bitter orange make up the fruitiness. Not too shabby.

Medium-bodied with a certain slickness. Surptisingly not that sticky. Also surprising is the mototing level of carbonation.

This works. It's not the greatest hop flavor that you get, but it's sturdy and looks damn fine in a snifter.

This is from notes.

A: Light rust color with thin off-white head. Medium level looking carbonation.

S: Strong floral hops and stone fruits. Sweet, sticky honey.

T: A pretty sweet tasting IPA. Seems like lots of dry hopping. Very floral again, with peaches and honey. Think mead. Lingering bitterness at the end. Heavily bittersweet, at both ends of the spectrum. Don't notice the high ABV.

M: Pretty viscous and heavy with light carbonation. The high ABV is not present here either.

O: This is great. Uncharacteristic of most IPA's but wonderful in it's own way. Taste with an open mind.

Had this on tap at a well respected craft beer establishement. Without a doubt, the worst DIPA I've ever had. A horrible sour taste. It tasted so horrible I couldn't muster more than two sips. All I could get from it was sour and malt with zero hop presence. An embarrasment of a beer.

Served in a snifter glass.

Appearance: Hazy amber, Head is about 1/2" off the first pour that is h a slightly off-white.

Smell: Light yeast which is weird for most IPAs. Malty scent which I do find very appealing.

Taste: Very good, it is complex with being malty bitter, not too quite on the floral side but seriously addicting. It is a little bit of everything,..marzen-like, bark type of feel that makes you undeniably happy.

Mouth: Very smooth, normally I like the fight with some IPAs but this is a little different.

Overall: I gambled and won on this brew, malty and creamy with lots to brag about. It isn't one of my favorite Imperial IPA but is more than enough to satisfy the palates. Salud!

Tap at Sea Dog pub in northborough, MA.

Pours a big fluffy 1.5 finger head fades slowly with lacing over copper reddish orange hazy beer.

Nose has earthy hops, hints of citrus fruit and other fruity hops, some malts as well chewy syrupy reddish malts, caramel, toffee, etc, and some candy citrus earthy hops.

Taste comes on bitter and strong, earthy chewy almost candy hops, a flavor like hop extract, spicy hops but no real fruit this time. Then malts, sweet and a bit syrupy, candy, syrupy malts with a reddish copper and chewy malt flavor. Booze is masked by the sweetness and bitterness fairly decently at this point. Finishes still fairly sweet chewy and spicy hops and pretty bitter, little sticky, long lingering bitterness. Nice bitter earthy bite on the finish, bit of grassy herbal hops, and booze comes out some on the finish

Mouth is a bit heavier bodied, decent carb, just a hint of booze until it warms and then the booze kicks in a bit.

Overall not bad, lots of malts and hops but not a lot of hop flavor, booze is hidden well, no off or bad flavors.

A - Murky honey amber, small off white head. Lots of lace.

S - Very cold - Hard to smell much of anything. Hops apparent.

T - Solid malt core - bitter heavy hop. Pine, burnt orange and tobacco.

M - Medium body, great carbonation and good balance.

D - Deceptively drinkable. Not hard at all to drink for the ABV. Not alcohol heat.

A: looks a nice orange amber color with a decent head. Terrible pour at the bar, though.

S: smells of nice citrus and pine hops with a huge malt character and some sweetness. Tons of caramel and toffee.

T: taste is dominated by the caramel and sweetness. Tastes like a bad barleywine or wheatwine without the complex character. The hops take a back seat here.

M: not good. Medium-heavy body with lighter carbonation than I'd like. Definitely on the smoother side of the continuum.

O: not very drinkable at all. This is not one to ever have again. Too bad, I wanted to like it, but it's just a weird mix of flavors.

Had this on tap at the Verona Rivertowne.

A - Pours a nice amber color with only a ring of sticky head (since they filled the 12oz glass to the rim)

S - Smell is kind of hoppy, more malt based with a sort of caramel soaked gram cracker kind of smell. I then took a sip.

T - I enjoyed it since it was smooth throughout but first sips were of a cold pint so I mostly got a sweet malt base of caramel soaked hops, but after it warmed bitter hops of citrus and pine flourished. Tasty.

M - The highest I expected was around 8 percent so to find it over 9 was very good indeed.

Overall I am glad my local pub had this on tap since it was a great tasting DIPA with some great hop bite. Would have it again or grab a bottle if cost was reasonable (7-8 dollars)

On tap at Sunset Cantina in Boston. Served in a tulip glass.

Pours a clear copper with a wonderful head that leaves behind a perfect lace. It's hard to get a better pour than this.

The nose is a little rotten, smelling of spoiled cherries, sweat, hay, and maple syrup. Not at all the hoppy nose I was expecting.

The mouth is pretty uninteresting. Lots of malts, this is fat more like a double pale ale than a double ipa. A tad syrupy and very boozy, it's a bit dark in the mouth with almost no hop presence. Surely they are there, I just can't fins them.

Overall a huge disappointment. Far too much alcohol foe not enough complexity of flavor. Don't bother.

Had this one at a 'pint nite" - the pour was decent - about an inch or so of foam appearing slowly after the dispense. My first double IPA- so wasnt too sure what to expect. The flavor of the hops were a bit overbalanced by the maltiness for my taste. It does go down pretty easy despite the alcohol content.

A: amber and clear

S: mild grapefruit, some hops

T: bittersweet hops, sweet on the front end and finishes dry. Little pine.

M: moderate carbonation, medium bodied.

Overall: the flavors in this one are very variable. Its hard to grasp one flavor before the next enters which defines this complex hoppy beer. I like this ones complexity though the taste is a little off for me.

Poured out as a nice golden color. The head was thick and white in color. The lacing sticks pretty well to my glass. The smell of the beer had a pretty good hoppy aroma to it, very inviting. The taste of the beer has a solid malt backbone with some citrusy & floral hops. The mouthfeel is very drinkable, with a good carbonation. Overall I found this beer to be pretty impressive, I would eventually like to revisit this one again. I'd say it's worthy of trying.

Shipyard XXXX IPA

Pours a rich mahogony, off white head and little lace. Big buttery diacetyl almost overwhelms the floral hops. The buttery notes come out more in the taste, coupled with some bitter American style hops adding grapefruit and orange zest notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and well carbonated. Overall, big English style diacetyl notes (not unexpected from Shipyard's crazy dominating ringwood yeast) and some hops. With a cleaner yeast strain this could have been alot more refreshing and less distracting. Even for an English style DIPA I found the hop presence to be rather muted.

Poured on tap at the Yard House in Long Beach. Review is from notes.

A: Dark orange/rusty color.

S: Balanced, bicuity malt over mostly floral and some piney hop notes.

T: Nice balance but still delivers a good kick. Fruity and slightly floral with a good dose of bready malt. This is what I look for in my IPAs

O: I could drink something like this all day. Great beer.

Served on-tap in a 10 oz. snifter @ the Corner in Litchfield, Conn.

A: Deep orange-amber with a rich, two-finger thick head of dense, creamy off-white foam. Retention is decent and lacing is quite nice.

S: Lush, fruity aroma with loads of apple, pear, citrusy notes and grassy, herbal hop scents.

T: Mellow, semisweet and caramel-like malt flavors hit first with a rush of dry, pine hops before a smooth, fruity malt complex washes over the palate. Bits of citrus, berry and floral notes come to rest in a herbal, grassy and clean finish with minimal alcohol sting and a mellow hop resin.

M: Smooth, full-bodied and slightly creamy, this IPA achieves incredible balance relative to it's strength.

O: A nice surprise that paired well with my BBQ bison burger with pepperjack and fried onions. The 9.25% ABV is masked incredibly well and the hops pull more punches than I'd have thought. A nice New England, East-Coast DIPA.

Pours a clear amber color with a medium white head that disappears quickly. Scent is alcohol, malt, very little hoppiness, and a bit of skunkiness. I don't know what it is, but this smells nothing like a DIPA should smell like. It's on tap, but doesn't smell fresh at all. Taste isn't very fresh either, unless they intended for it to taste this way. There are definitely some hoppy flavors with a lot of grapefruit citrus. A lot of caramel malt and alcohol flavors. Mouthfeel is sticky. Drinkability is fair. Although this beer is not horrible, it was very disappointing.

A - Pours with one and a half fingers of off white foam on top of a clear, copper-brown body. The head settles at an average rate and leaves light lace.

S - Caramel malt and toffee with some spicy, pine hops. Classic IPA aroma.

T - Toffee and biscuit malt notes up front with some sharp citrus and pine hop flavor. Some acidic caramel in the middle with moderate, sharp bitterness. The beer finishes with lots of pine and grapefruit hop flavor as well as dry caramel and toast.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - Not bad at all, it reminds me of SN Celebration in that it has a lot of pine flavor and pungent bitterness without the fruity, complex hop aromas that I think of as characteristic of modern IPAs. The aroma comes together quite nicely with good doses of both hop and malt that balance each other and leave the malt slightly more dominant. The flavor qualities are somewhat less successful, though it is still a drinkable beer. Bitterness is at the front of the experience with rich, but dry malt character backing it up. The dryness keeps the malt from ever really managing to balance out the bitterness though, and while there is accompanying grapefruit and pine flavor, bitterness is really the dominant characteristic. Good, but I will take a modern hop flavor/aroma oriented IPA over this any day.

A - Yellow ipa style, thin head great lace.

S - Smells of citrus hops, malts, and grapefruit, alcohol.

T - WOW, astringent alcohol, piny citrus malts, taste like super glue if I knew what that tasted like?? Very different DIPA than the norm.

M - Medium carbonation, great aftertaste.

D - Drinks kinda rough for a DIPA, but most are a little over the top right? This one might be in its own class of DIPA, not the norm for me... Way bitter alcohol astringent like. Wow gotta try this one again.

A: Dark amber in color with decent white head.

S: Besides a typical IPA smell, quite a few hints of sweeter ingredients like honey are involved.

T: Interesting for a dIPA to actually be quite sweet (in comparison to other IPAs) with hints of honey and caramel.

M: Full bodied and lots of flavor.

D: Smoother than most dIPAs, thus easier to drink.

On tap at Callahan's, San Diego.

Pours a dark clear amber color with a big off-white head. Fairly floral aroma with some spices. Tastes of fruit (not just citrus, but also a lot of apples/pears), and hops spiciness. Not much bitterness, but there's a lot of bubble-gum in the aftertaste. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Not a big fan of the taste here - too fruity and bubble-gum-y for a double IPA; they pretty much overpower the hop flavors. I'll pass next time.

On tap at the 2010 Hayward Bistro DIPA Festival.

Amber colored pour with a small off-white head and nice lacing throughout the drink. Hoppy aroma with grapefruit and other citrus fruits with some malt also in there. Initial light grapefruit taste but it has a medicine-like taste as well with some hops on the swallow. Can't really put my finger on why I'm tasting medicine but I press on. Pretty thin mouthfeel but this went down easily even at 9.25%.

Overall I thought this was a good beer even with the slightly odd taste. I'm hoping to find this in a bottle to see if I can improve on this rating.

Wow! On tap at The Tap Room on St. John, USVI. Poured into a snifter, it was a slightly hazy amber color with a perfect off-white head. Very nice aromas of citrusy hops but with some melted butter and toast notes. This IPA is incredibly smooth and well balanced, packed with hops, but buttery smooth as not to get "soapy". Definitely a must try if you see this on tap.

Pours a deep amber color, creamy head, no carbonation, looks pretty darn good sitting here in my tulip glass!

Smell is an astringent citric butternut type of smell, definitely unique and the buttery character reminds my of a similar nuance in their regular IPA. The citrus aroma is tart and oily in the nose. There's also some pine going on.

Taste mirrors the aroma with the sweet astringent citrus flavor. There's also a little bit of a hop oil flavor and some nuttiness. (which is probably where that buttery nuance comes from)

Mouthfeel is creamy, wet, medium body and leaves a buttery nutty hop finish in the mouth.

Drinkability is very good. I could have a few of these with no problem at all, really enjoy the taste.

Nicely balanced and the tap version is so much better than the bottled version. I had this in the bottle a few months prior and wasn't overly impressed.

A: Pours a nice amber like orange hue with a nice tall white head. Very nice retention and some nice sheets of lace all the way down the glass.

S: Caramel and biscuit malt. Lots of nice citrus hops to back it.

T: Nice bold sweet malts up front. Bready, caramel, with hints of toffee. The hops are mostly citric. Tasty but there is a bit of a plastic type quality hiding beneath.

M: Medium in body, smooth, nicely carbonated.

D: Pretty good minus the slightly off putting plastic notes.

C. Clear as can be
H. Red-ish Orange; almost like a piece of copper
N. Hops, hops, and more hops (notes of citrus, pine, and some sweet aromas)

XXXX is quite like a party on my tongue. There are four different types of hops in this bad boy, and to balance out the bitterness there are four different types of malt. Now while I'm not a fan of malt, I am a fan of hops. I can't say anything bad about this beer, partially because my kindergarten teacher (Miss Buzzy) told me to never say anything bad about anyone or anything. Although even if I wanted to I couldn't. This is an amazingly well balanced IPA that if I could I would drink it all day, bathe in it, and then attempt to make sweet sweet love in it. YOU MUST TRY THIS BEER! Score; 4.97
