looks like a beautiful porter to me, poured with a nice thick tan head over the very clear, yet very dark brew, the red highlights and now lacey head have a nice fruity roasted character, and while the chocolate malts are there in the taste there are a lot of other flavors at work as well. The hops are mild and in the background. the lower carbonation in this beer kind of lets the malts take it in the mouthfeel department... but still goes down pretty smoothly and I'd say it's a nice drinkable porter. thanks for the beer there weswes.

A: Pours a dark mahogany color with slightly less than a fingers worth of head that fizzles away fairly quickly
S: Very rich and malty, with a fairly distinct Ringwood character. Also get some chocolate and light earthy/fruity hops
T: Follows the nose. Again, very malty with some chocolate and earthy hop character. Slightly fruity with some caramel sweetness in the finish. Underlying Ringwood yeast throughout, but it doesn't take away from the other characteristics
M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Rich and bold
O: If you don't mind English Ringwood yeast, then this brew is a great addition to winter. Kind of a hybrid of scotch ale and English porter. Worthy of a try if you like English brews

22oz bomber poured into a Duvel glass.
A: Pours jet black with a nice two fingers of creamy tan colored head, which dissipates fairly quickly. Shows ruby red highlights when head to the light.
S: Not much of a nose here, some sweet malts and a touch of sweet spice, maybe clove or allspice.
T: Very little front end to speak of, most of the flavor of roasted malts, a bit of coffee and dark chocolate, with a mildly bitter, slightly spiced finish.
M: A touch overcarbonated, but fairly easy to drink. It doesn't weigh on the tongue too much with progressive sips.
O: A easy drinking porter, claiming to be a winter warmer. The low ABV makes putting the whole bomber away too easy, and you'll be feeling quite cozy. I might go back to this, if I need a smooth, easy to put down session porter.

Into a nonic:
A: jet black colored body leaving a two finger foamy lumpy off-white head. The head slowly dies to a half finger that lasts a little longer in my nonic. Minimal lacing is left.
S: slightly malty and has a dry coffee aroma coming through as the beer warms.
T: bittersweet through the malts and the dry coffee.
M: light to medium with lots of harshness coming through at all angles, kinda bad for an English Porter. However, due to the low ABV, this is pretty drinkable.
O: I'm not really thrilled with this beer. I won't be coming back to this.

22 oz bottle (2012) served in a Sam Adams lager glass.
Pours deep, dark, clear mahogany with a small and fragile tan head. Decent lacing is left on the glass. [3.75]
The spice level is near perfect and well-balanced. While evident in the nose [4.25] and obvious up front upon tasting, the spicing slowly fades after the finish eventually leaving a chocolate malt to dominate the aftertaste. Sweet and bitter largely in balance, but a tad too sour. No burnt flavors, but a hint of smoke in the finish. High complexity and good balance make every sip seem a little different than the one before. At various times, dark fruit, vanilla, cinnamon, English hops and several other flavors make appearances. Plenty of dark chocolate in the nose and flavor.
M: near full body with rather lively carbonation. I suspect I'd prefer a bit less carbonation; a suspicion supported by the fact that the mouth feel improves after the beer has been in the glass for a while. Semi-dry finish.
O: outstanding, and unusually low ABV, winter warmer.

A: single finger tan thick head on a very deep amber/dark brown clear body.
S: molasses, cinnamon, roasted malts, caramel and brown sugar.
T: spices, dark chocolate, roasted malts, hint of espresso, earthy hops. Mild bitterness to the finish.
M: medium body and moderate carbonation.
Overall: complex, flavorful and probably the best beer I have had from Shipyard which doesnt say a whole lot but this is certainly a good one.

A: Pours dark brown, almost black. The pale brown head is large and really compact. Slow dissipation leaves only decent lacings.
S: Roasted, kind of candy-like sweetness to the malt. Dark dried fruits balanced with vanilla. Soy Sauce. Smell is on the milder side.
T: Roasted, a bit smoked sweet but also light malt. Dark syrup and dark dried fruits. Vanilla once again. Some bitter marmelade. Bitter hops.
M: Body is a bit lighter than I tought it would be, carbonation is aggresive, almost fizzy. Aftertaste is long and holds a balanced bitterness.
O: The carbonation is almost like in an Adjunct Lager - rich and aggresive. Otherwise it's a little to modest for my taste.

Pours black, little to no head. Into an imperial dimple mug. I expected winter warmer when I read the label. It kind is a cross between a winter warmer a lighter porter and kind of stoutish. Roasty, but not too roasty, heavy but not too heavy. Kinda sweet and juicy, but not too much. A very solid drinker, great mouthfeel and perfect carbonation. One of shipyards best offerings. Too bad they don't distribute more. Could be a huge 6 pack seller for them. I picked it up at the federal jacks store, first place I've seen it!
