From mixed 12 pack; poured orange/amber with a white head that disappeared rather quickly.

Smell has a bit of a metallic edge -- copper? Plus some caramel and yeasty hints.

Breaddough (like browned pizza dough), a little caramel, butter (there's the yeast); a bit dry. Where are hops?

A little thin; some decent carbonation; finishes clean.

You can knock these back easily because here isn't one disinct flavor that jumps out at you. Just had one after painting outside for 4 hours. Refreshing, not filling, not overpowering. Decent but nothing I'd go out of my way for -- but wouldn't refuse on either.

Export Ale opens to a grainy nose, full of wet wheat, Grape Nuts cereal, whole wheat bread dough, biscuit, hay, and cracker. Toasted nuts and toast crust add light layers of baked complexity. A good measure of sugar helps offset the breads, most of it brown, but there are some nice fruit esters as well, including apricot, orange, and berry. Shades of grapefruit and pine from the hops add touches of citrusy bitterness, further offsetting the grains. As a whole, the nose is nice, being decently balanced, aromatic, and featuring a pleasant set of fruits and sugars to offset the breads, the nose suffering mainly from being light, but more importantly, somewhat plain, offering little in terms of a “wow factor,” and relying instead on simply presenting decent aromas in decent quantities.

On the tongue, the beer has a noticeably grainy flavor profile, with hay, Grape Nuts cereal, toasted bread, wet wheat, biscuit, toasted nut, and wheat bread making up the majority of the flavors. The brown sugars and fruit esters – again: apricot, orange, berry – do help offset this somewhat, as do grapefruit and pine from the hops. In subsequent sips much of the nuance is lost, the flavors simply too weak to stand up to repetition, and the beer becomes even more heavily dominated by wet wheat, toast crust, and hay. The aftertaste is a continuation of the main mouthful, lingering for a decent while. Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is certainly good summer fare, being light and crisp, but largely suffering from a lack of sugars to help counter the heavy grain flavors.

A 355ml bottle with a BB of June 2013. Picked up recently from Booths.

Poured into a straight pint glass. A bright golden-amber hue with faint translucence and good carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a surface layer. Some lacing. Aroma of light caramel malt with hints of earthy yeast and stewed hops. A faint sweetness in the background. Meh.

Tastes of light caramel malt with a dry finish. Notes of caramel, subtle grain, earthy yeast and stewed hops. Well-attenuated, though there is a faint malty sweetness in the background along with a hint of cardboard. A very mild bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with pleasant carbonation and good body. Rather astringent, with an aftertaste of stewed leaves, earthy yeast and weak malt.

Pretty dull. Nothing technically wrong - it seems well crafted but boring. Like a US version of John Smiths. Looks good, but the aroma and flavour don't hold your interest. Decent body though rather too dry. With so many great beers out there, this isn't really worth the trouble. Give it a miss.

12 oz bottle poured into a tulip glass.

A - clear bright orange copper color. Nice foamy head with good lacing and ok retention.

N - yeasty and malty . Floral hops. Tastes British, appropriately.

T - light and floral hops. Toasty biscuits. Ringwood yeast.

M - light and crisp. Really drinkable.

O - Reminds of summer. Ive had a lot of these over the years and I will probably have many many more.
