This series is a celebration of tasty local ingredients and distinctive terroir. We brewed four beers, each with barley and hops from one particular state (Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York). Each beer in the series was brewed according to a similar recipe, to achieve an ale that is assertively-hopped and dry-hopped, but also bold in its malt character. Since the recipe is consistent, the flavor difference in each beer results from the distinctive local terroir. Working with skilled farmers to craft this series has been an exceptional experience for us. We hope you enjoy the result.

22oz bomber poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint.

A: Clear amber, two inch foamy white head settles shortly. A thin slip of lacing coats the whole glass.

S: Wildflowers, light whiffs of citrus (mostly mandarin orange and pineapple). Malt smells of honey granola, caramel, and light grain. Light butterscotch.

T: Light citrus hop tastes hit the tip of the tongue for just an instant. An oily, floral bitterness takes over from there. Hop tastes then take a subtle resiny turn. Honey. Pineapple and tangerine alternate with more oily hop tastes. The granola-like malt impression and graininess are here, but the buttery/butterscotch flavor is more pronounced than it was on the nose. Toffee. Finishes with honey and dank, oily hops.

M: Medium bodied, slick and oily. Sharp carbonation.

O: I realize that the point of the local series is to highlight the terroir differences of the local malt and hops used in each beer, and I love the concept. But this beer is still plagued by that unpleasant buttery taste (which I would guess is caused by the house yeast) that derails many of Peak Organic's other beers. I just didn't enjoy it, and I can't bring myself to purchase the other beers of the series to compare them. I got this bottle for free and I almost don't care to finish it.

Poured into an imperial pint glass. Color was a slightly reddish brown with a 1 finger of white head. Head lasted approx 5 minutes then left just a thin layer with good cling. No noticeable carbonation. Aroma alternated between butterscotch and hops. The butter aroma was up front, and the hops more subtle in the background. Flavor was nicely balanced. Had hints of a fruity sweet, but also of a bitter hoppy. Felt slightly overcarbonated in the mouth, a bit to tingly on the the tongue. Overall a decent beer. Nice to see local products represented.

Poured a quarter inch cream colored head, not big but it had decent retention. The body is an interesting pretty hazy apricot jam color. In the smell I was expecting hops but got mainly sweet malt and caramel. The taste mirrors the smell but some mild hops come through and there's a bit of dried fruit aspect to it. Medium finish. Although not my favorite of their local series it's very drinkable and still fresh and good.

Finally found the Local VT after many weeks of searching. I really enjoyed the others I tried and am enthusiastic about the concept. I really liked this version. Not my favorite in the entire series, but really strong addition. A lot of malt character and superb mouthfeel. Did not have the citrus hop character that New York had though, which I really liked. But, the unique characteristics of the Vermont grain really shine. A very nice Pale Ale. Hope this happens again next year.

From the 22 ouncer. Sampled on December 18, 2011. The most annoying thing about this is the glued on tin foil around the bottle cap. I would rather it had been loosely sitting there. It pour a pleasing medium amber or waltnut color with an okay head that diminishes quickly. Not much lacing. This version is suppsoed to be hoppy but I get more in the way of sweet malts and yeast on the nose. After awhile the hops do show up but not until I near the end of the bottle. Medium body. Sweet malts, yeast, and sugar in the taste with a slight earthy hoppiness taking up the rear after a bit of a wait. This is a nice concept for a craft beer series.
