Stopped by here while visiting some friends in Albany, for some after dinner drinks.

This is more of a restaurant than a bar, we actually selected it for the quiet atmosphere so we could talk and chill out, since it was after main dinner hours and fairly empty. Very nice bar and nice interior. The bartender was extremely nice and attentive.

The selection of beers was just okay, as there were really only a half dozen beers you would consider craft beer or a quality import - Ommegang, Southern Tier and Shipyard were highest quality selections.

Gingerman is down the street for us, so we get there now and then. Beer selection is just ok, average for Albany which means a beer lover can get an ordinary but acceptable draft there. If you are looking at Beeradvocate, chances are you are not hoping for a Sierra Nevada IPA as the best beer in a bar. Same beer selection year after year. Food is better than average for Albany (not a food Mecca) - good treatment of fish and a couple of inventive dishes. Still it is a fine lunch place, attractive with fine service - for Albany, our fine city.

I have been going to the Gingerman for a number of years but had not been there in a while; actually this weekend was my first time there in over a year. Real nice place, very clean looking inside with a darker colors scheme. Nice bar area, somewhat small but for the size of the place it does well. Usually have a number of brews on tap, I can remember about 8or 9 years ago I was introduced to Speckled Hen on tap there and they have always had a nice selection of different brews. This past weekend I had a few of the Sierra Nevada Harvest which where excellent. The place is more known for its wine selection, which I have been told, is solid. Also the food selection is nice, has a wide variety of fair and has always been good. One thing that I like about the place is that the folks who work there are always very professional. A nice stop when in Albany but with its size it can get crowded.

The Gingerman is an oasis located on Western Avenue in Albany. It boasts a classic and tasteful decor, backlit with warm soft lighting. The staff is professional, attentive and accommodating.

While this review will center on the quality and selection of the beer on draft, it must be noted that The Gingerman has an exceptional wine list and a staff knowledgable enough to recommend the proper wine and entree pairings.

The draft list features beers representing numerous countries and several different states. The list includes Hennepin, Harpoon I.P.A., Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Samuel Adams, Saranac Pale Ale, a rotation Brooklyn seasonal, a rotating Magic Hat seasonal, Pilsner Urquell, Paulaner Hefeweizen, Stella Artois, Newcastle, Warsteiner, Guinness, Harp, Smithwick's, Heineken, Amstel and Rolling Rock.

Of course, all of the above are served in the appropriate glassware.

If you are going to drop in for a few drinks, I recommend you stay for dinner. The menu is extensive and the food is delicious. If you are in a hurry, at least enjoy their cheese board, paired with the appropriate beer, of course.
