Had on tap at Metropolitan in Baltimore.

A - Hazy gold, white head, mild carb streams, not much lacing to speak of.

S - Mildly sweet with a yeasty spice.

T - Mild bitterness up front, sweet creamy middle, tart and almost rooty and grassy, finishes with a faded hoppy bitterness. The overall profile is very clean and focused.

M - Feels thin to medium and creamy at times.

O - Very nice brew right here. Felt like a nice treat. At $9/pint its kind of pricey. Totally worth it, but only every once in a while.

Visited Baltimore for a RUSH concert and to take in an Oriole vs. Yankee game. Wanted to visit Max's 'cause it was on the "Top 100 craft beer bars" in the U.S. as per www.draftmag.com. See my review elsewhere regarding the location. This is about the beer.

Appearance - Golden yellow in color, clear, with a small off-white head topping off the chalice in which this offering was poured. Mild to marginal carbonation.

Smell - Some nice Belgian yeast spice notes. Not too intense, a nice malty backbone that introduces some sweet character as well.

Taste - The opening is mild, some bready/yeasty presence, the middle is nicely "full-flavored" with both sweet malts and some spicy contributions. I can't really pick out much more. Perhaps too subtle for me to pick up.

Mouthfeel - Light on the tongue, an easy drinker. The mild carbonation gives it some presence.

Overall - I knew nothing about this beer nor how it got to this locale. The website beer menu at Max's listed this as "Van Steenberge Benelux Archangel". I don't think so. Looking at the Van Steenberge website shows no connection between this brewery and the Benelux brewpub and cafe in Quebec. Anywho, I digress. This is a nice easy drinking beer, nothing that knocks your socks off. A nice Belgian Pale.

On tap at 72 hours of Belgium at Max's this past weekend.

The beer pours a honey gold color with OK head retention and lacing. The nose has something of a honey and paste aroma, with some underlying spice. The aroma is attractive, though I can't say it's blowing me away. The flavors replicate the nose, with some additional flavors of cherry and gingerale. Sweetness is moderate and is held in check with a touch of hoppy bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and drinkability is good.

While nothing special, this is a nice, easy going beer.
