during last weeks trip to the OBX i took an afternoon to drive to chips (an hour north of where i was staying) and was thoroughly impressed. a wall of over 400 single bottles satisfied my mix-n-match jones and there was no bottle that was dusty, sticky, or past its prime. high turn over rate is very important to me. the store itself is clean, well maintained, and classy. beers on the wall are arranged by style, with many hard to find bottles available including 5 of the 7 trappist breweries. too many craft brews and imports to name. full line of american adjunct lagers as well with an apparent big seller being yuengling as it is almost everywhere in the OBX. there's also 4 doors worth of cooler space that contained other impressive bottles that werent on the wall. nice little area for glassware next to the beer wall as well and i happily picked up a delirium tremens tulip and a chimay goblet. the rest of the store is a huge selection of wine and wine accoutrements of every type with some attractive scotch glasses and sake sets. there's also a narrow humidor with a selection of about 15 quality cigars and a rack of arsty high end snacks by the register. didn't get to speak to chip but the store manager was awesome and chips daughter was very friendly at the register. they had empty case boxes at the ready so customers don't have to awkwardly pile up multiple six packs in their arms. the best beer store i've ever visited and one that i will frequent every year.

Chip's is a great surprise for any beer lover heading to the Outer Banks. The staff was very attentive and friendly, and seemed pretty knowledgeable about beer in general. The atmosphere is laid back and seems happy and welcoming. Every time I went in the service was fast and really good.
This place has a great beer selection, best in the Outer Banks. Not only do they have a very good selection of 6 packs and 12 packs, but the singles for sale selection was amazing: the place literally has hundreds of beers to choose from.
Good local selection and beers from around the US and world, this is the place to go for any craft beer fan. The wall of singles is set up in various styles and the cold selection of singles was very good as well. The prices are on the high side, but being from NY they were average to me so I didn't have an issue spending quite a bit of money each time I went it. I did not sample any of the beers on tap, but that is just another great option thatg they offer. This is THE place to go for beer in the Outer Banks.

When in the outer banks I always stop here a couple of times. It is pretty much the only game in town. Big city caliber as far as selection goes. As with most places that are the only game prices are a bit high. When the owner or his wife are in service is great, when they are not in service is fine. I emailed ahead of time and after one or two messages they held a few bottles for me (lips of faith and Allagash), stuff I can't get at home. They do have a couple of taps so it is nice to have a drink in hand while shopping.

This place has the ultimate beer/wine selection on the Outer Banks. Any beer lover needs to stop by Chips on their way into their favorite vacation staff. The staff there is very friendly and knowledgeable.
If you are looking for beers from around the united states and around the world this is the place to go. Very well organized and easy to find the beer you want. Do not hesitate to ask the staff for some help because they are very helpful and knowledgable in all things beer. They offer various tasting opportunities throughout the week as well.

I was in Kill Devil Hills for NYE weekend and went to visit Chip's after reading the great reviews here. From the moment I walked it, I liked the place. My twin brother and I were greeted warmly upon entering and quickly made our way to the beer section.
Being from the Washington DC area, I am used to paying slightly higher prices, so I was pleased with the single bottle prices.
The staff was super helpful. We monopolized a lot of one gentleman's time by asking for local stuff. We talked to him about other collaborations and he even told us a seafood market to hit up upon request!
I thought the selection was pretty good, and I liked that it was organized by style of beer. Although, I think I would almost prefer if the same brand was together.
Overall, a great, great store. I didn't try anything in the tasting room, but they had some good stuff on tap, such as DFH Burton Baton.

Went here New Years Eve, rented a house for the weekend and heard about this place. Great store, nice selection of NC beers and lots of otehrs. Great Avery selection as well. Chip, or that who I think helped us, was super friendly and helped us find some North Carolina gems that don't leave the state. Looked like a fun tasting room as well but we didnt' partake. Great store, no need to bring your own beer to the Outter Banks when Chip's is there for you, unless you want a higher ABV beer. They know their stuff.

Thank you BA for helping me discover a store in a place I've been going to for 25 years!
Went here for the first time this past summer and again over the Christmas holiday. My family stays up north in Duck, but the drive down here is very worthwhile.
Very friendly owner who explained the layout and answered questions. Large selection of single bottles as well as six packs. Owner said pretty much everything is available as a single so he was mostly fine with breaking up 4/6 packs. Noticed a large selection of craft cans too this past visit, which will be good to remember next summer when more beach time is possible.
Nice to see Outer Banks Brewing Station bottles here along with other NC locals (Highland, Mother Earth, Duck-Rabbit). Also some midwest stuff that I can't get in California. Bells, Founders, New Holland, Ska, for example.
Some cool glassware along the back wall.
Guy at check-out even carried out the heavy box I put together out to my car. Great service! Chip's will be a regular stop for me from now on.

A: Very nicely laid out. Not much refrigerated, but well organized shelves. Clean and decent lighting. About half the store was dedicated to beer and the other half to wine.
Q: Almost all of the beers they had were high-quality brews from good international or domestic microbreweries or craft breweries. Some main-stream beers as well for "normal" customers, so something for everyone here.
S: Owner was super-friendly. He greeted us at the door, hung out without being imposing, but offered help whenever we looked like we needed it. And he struck up a conversation w/ my dad to keep him occupied while I shopped, but still interjected useful advice for me as we went.
S: Mixed selection of six-packs and single bottles - about 50/50. Domestics, imports, sections specifically for lagers, ales, Belgians, etc. Some local stuff from Eastern NC as well as some brews distributed to NC that you can't get in VA (eg. Ska brewing).

I visited Chip's around 8/16/11 while vacation at the Outer Banks, NC.
The store was easy to find in the Mile Post 6 shopping center on the east side of the highway. Inside there was primarily 2 rows of shelves and a couple cools that held beer. There was nothing here that was exceptionally good or difficult to find, but the selection of local beers were very good. There was some Eastern Carolina stuff like Mother Earth and Weeping Radish as well as a good variety from Bells, Ska, Founders, DFH. Not much in terms of Belgians, but the locals were well represented. The cashier was very friendly asking if we needed help and chatting with me as we checked out. There was a pretty good selection of glassware, but nothing that blew my mind.
Overall, I think that this is a very nice place to have in your back pocket way out from civilization at the beach, there are probably 50 stores within 30 minutes drive of Philadelphia that have similar selections. In fact, almost every Total Wine I've ever stepped into in DE, NJ, and NC has the beer repertoire and price of Chip's. That said, the most important thing in beer stores is location, location, location and there ain't no other game within 50 miles.

Stopped by to pick up some North Carolina locals that I can't get in Georgia. Ended up leaving with a nice mixed selection of Mother Earth, a bottle of Black Radish from the Weeping Radish, a bottle of the Lemongrass Wheat from the Outer Banks Brewing Station, and a sweet Terrapin mason jar pint glass that ran 5 bucks (sells for $16 on the website for some reason!). Service was decent, they helped me find the Mother Earth I was looking for but mostly left me alone. Nice shop, definitely the only option in the area!
