Looks very much like coca cola. Might have some carbonation issues. Color is black with little tan head. Smell has some coffee, sweetness, and other stuff. Tastes decent, very simple- not a lot of flavor. What they did put into this seems like they didn't put enough because i'm not tasting a lot of flavor. Not much after taste. It is smooth which a cream stout should be. But the mouthfill is kind of watery, not thick like a stout should be. Not sure if there was a carbonation issue on this one...seems kind of flat. Just not doing it for me, not enough flavor or thickness for my likeing.

Tasted On: 11-08-2011
Freshness: Not indicated
Packaging: 22 oz. brown bottle
Glassware: Tulip pint
Purchased: Received in a trade
A: Pours with a crazy, massive tan head of 6 fingers. I think this bottle has some over-carbonation. Each pour from the bomber leads to the same crazy foam. Color is black and almost entirely opaque, with some slight ruby edges seen. Good retention and very good lacing.
S: Light aromas of toasted malts and coffee, but there's not a lot in the nose here.
T: Flavors are of smoked, roasted malts, with a bittersweet character. Seems a bit too dry for the style.
M: Features a medium level of carbonation and somewhat thin bodied. The finish is dry and has a coffee-like aftertaste. Reminds me more of an Irish dry stout than a milk/cream stout.
O: Overall an OK beer, but I found it needing improvement in every area.

A: Pours a dark black color, small tan/white head no lacing
S: Not too much. Roasted grains and slight coffee
T; Slight sweet maltiness up front followed by more bitter roasted grains and coffee flavor also some grassy hop flavors
M: Mouthfeel is pretty nice. Medium bodied goes down smooth and creamy
O: This beer is ok, it needs something more though...smell was almost non existant. A bigger malt bill might make this one real good.

Pours almost black with some dark ruby highlights when held up. There is one finger of pale tan head that quickly recedes to a layer of foam on the surface.
Aroma is quite good, milk chocolate, light roast, smooth espresso and some creamy caramel.
Taste follows the nose to a point but is not quite as smooth all the way through, it begins with dark chocolate and roasted malt. This moves into a bit of coffee and mild astringency, finishing with cream and dark chocolate.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. Not quite as smooth and creamy feeling as most cream/milk stouts.
Overall this ale is quite drinkable and good, but I keep comparing it to Central Water's Brewhouse Coffee Stout, which is one of the best sweet stouts I've had, and it just can't compete

Review from notes on 07/07/10
22oz for $4 at Huck's in Spokane, WA
Poured from bottle to SN Pint
A: 2 fingers of brown foam fall to reveal surface within 2 minutes of pour. Black beer which I cannot judge clarity on.
S: Strong toasty, coffee grains. Unfortunately, this smells like it has too much black patent malt, very dry scent, like charcoal, hint of sharp chemical scent.
T: Very strong toast flavor is accented with notes of coffee, and hoppy resin. Not impressive. Finish is very dry and toasted to a crisp.
M: Low carb and body reminds me of a rauchbier. Unfortunately, there's no smoke here to balance the charred feel of this beer.
D: This beer leaves one wishing the octane were a little higher. Needs more body. Quite a bit of improvement available here.

Serving type - bottle
A - Pours an obsidian black, with near-zero head, leaving a thin, light brown lacing.
S - Smell is dominantly roasted espresso, with notes of chocolate, and molasses.
T - Taste is of bittersweet espresso, with malty chocolate flavor, and somewhat bready, almost cookie-like malts for balance.
M - Medium bodied and creamy. Light carbonation.
D - This one ranks pretty high in drinkability IMHO. Borderline sessionable. More so than Lava rock porter I also tried from Dicks.
Overall - A nice example of a stout w/lots of roasty, coffee-like flavors. I think the Porter from this brewery is better, but that is mostly a preference. A solid, approachable stout overall.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle, a bit too cold, but let it warm up before drinking.
A - Very dark black with a nice mocha colored head. Fades somewhat quickly, but does leave moderate lacing.
S - Mild aromas of milk chocolate, molasses, toffee and dark roasted malt.
T - Adequate flavors of sweet chocolate, coffee and burnt caramel, nicely bittered. A bit of smoke as well.
M - Surprised some mentioned it being watery, as mine seemed quite thick and creamy. Smooth, yet a bit dry in finish.
D - A decent but not exciting stout. Easy to finish, but left me wanting a bit deeper flavors.

Had from a cask at Jakes 5th anneversary party. This is the bourbon oak aged version. Pours dark with no head and little carbonation- almost still as can be expected from a cask pour. Dark black body give way to flashes ruby around the edges in the sunlight. Really light body, smooth with just a hint of the bourbon oak aging. Smith light roast malt, sweetness with a light tannin/hop bite.

A: Poured into pint glass to reveal dark wooden brown and chocolate head that smoothed out into an unshimmered lake.
S: The nose was a properly sweet chocolate malts but not overpowering.
T: The flavor will not overpower you on this one. As it follows the nose, the low key nature retains it's character. Notes of coffee and roasted barley come around along with bitterness on a moderate scale.
M: Very thin to say the least. I would have expectd something at least medium to give the beer it's proper sense of fullness.
D: A quality beer that needs to be toughed up a bit perhaps or moved away from the porteresque parts.

Poured into straight pint glass. Poured a very slightly translucent black, no head so no retention or lacing.
A sweet aroma, not overly or sticky sweet though, with solidly roasted scents blending well with a trace of hop. The flavor had more of a coffee flavor than the aroma had led me to expect. The beer was very smooth and balanced across the tongue with a sharp coffee flavor on the end.
The body was very good. Full, smooth, flavorful and balanced are the aspects I appreciated most. Drinkability was excellent, having multiples of these would be a joy.
Overall, as with most beers from this brewery, this may not be the best of it's style, but damn it is certainly worth drinking when this is the style you're in the mood for.

Reviewed at The gingerman NYC solo from notes taken that day.
Appearance: Deep mohagundy with little cream colored head.
Smell: Dark malts and earthy with hints of licorice.
Taste: Opens with a subtle sourness which is then taken over by an earthy over roasted coffee which carries over into the finish leaving a roasted and earthy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied, minimal carbonation.
Drinkability: I would have this again but recommend this to those who seek a roasted, earthy grainy brew withe a subtle sour profile.

A- dark brown with a finger of tan head and decent retention
S- roasted malt and sweetness
T- like fresh-brewed coffee with lots of sugar and creamer
M- a bit highly carbonated, but medium body
D- decent, but i'm not used to over-the-top fizziness in stouts so it must be an acquired preference. Overall it was pretty good. I was just scared for the longest time of trying it due to the name, but it's not bad at all.
