A - light golen, clear, but suspended yeast is bouncing around in the carbonation, delicate puffy white head, good retention, leaves a bit of lace behind, not much though

S - fresh summery fruit, tart orange, hay, gentle spice, crisp pilsner malt,

T - clean and crisp malt, well attenuated, light citrus fruit, real tasty yeast spice, aftertaste is spice and alcohol, hops add some earthy complexity (possibly saaz?) and a hint of bitterness

M - nice and light, smooth, but crisp, alcohol is noticable, but does not slow you down at all, med high carbonation, any more and it could be harsh, but this is about perfect

D - just a gorgeous, fresh summer beer

Urthel isn't breaking any new ground with Hibernus Quentum, but they sure have done a damn fine job. Just superb, I love tripels that have that "summer fresh" character, nothing is heavy handed, it just sort of dances around and delights. Excellent stuff.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass. A minor pop off the cork.

A nice honey amber orange color, somewhat cloudy with a mix of small cola bubbles that then dissapears to show off lots of tall streaming pin head bubbles all along the side of the glass that crawl slowly. Head is really small, barely manages a finger, very soapy, and settles to a small collar maybe 3mm thick, with a little bit of a white top.

Nose is interesting. Classic Belgian sweetness, lots of interesting caramel and spicy notes, and good white wine grape like dryness.

On the palate this has a real nice wine like crispness. Density of malts is totally missing, but does let the flavors come out. Sweet candy and malts in the mid palate, with a floral crisp finish and hints of sweet apple. Nicely carbonated, almost effervescent and playful if hinting towards wet territory. The lighter body seems to match the flavor profile on this nicely even though I probably would want something thicker.

Overall kind of a light tripel, but a good one to know about, it would make a good wine like pairing for food on top of it.

Retired?!? How long has this been in my cellar? A stamp on the back label reads "03JA". Is that "best by' or "produced on"? Let's hope for the latter.

Lots of lees evident in the bottom of the bottle, calling for a gentle pour. No head as a result and color was a deep golden-yellow, of a shade to make King Midas and Croesus jealous, with NE-quality clarity and a good bit of carbonation in evidence. Nose had an interesting musty honey-like scent. Mouthfeel was medium and it tasted strongly of honey in the mouth. Wow, but this really held up nicely. Finish was extremely dry with hints of anise to accompany the honey taste. I have bad news for the PETY (People for the Ethical Treatment of Yeast), but LOTS of little yeasties died in the production of this beer. A moment of silence will follow.

750 ml bottle into chalice, 07/08 dating on the cork. Pours a very cloudy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Thin wisps of lacing on the glass, with slight carbonation streaming up from the bottom. Aromas of big apricot, lemon, bread, pear, pepper, earth, herbal, grape, apple, honey, floral, and white wine funkiness. Some pretty nice aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of big grape, apple, apricot, pepper, herbal, earth, bread, orange, grass, candi sugar, honey, and slight white wine tanginess. Very nice balance of flavors, with good complexity. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly slick and creamy mouthfeel as expected. Alcohol is very well hidden at 9% with only a slight warming after the finish. Very easy to sip on. Overall this is a very nice Tripel! Age definitely took some of the traditional peppery flavor from this; but it was still nicely balanced and very smooth. Too bad they discontinued this one, I would really like to try this fresh.

330ml bottle. Trappist glass.Enjoyed on may´11.Bronze color.Toasted beige crown.Brief lasting.Hop & dark fruit aromas.Spiced notes.Green dark fruit flavor with added sweetness.Hints of spices.Full body,medium carbonation. ABV heat.Not a well balanced beer as expected from a Tripel one.

Good lord. Every sip is heavenly with this Urthel. Soft belgium with honey and phenols. It's no longer made so stock up if you find it. Very, very well worth it. Leaves my mouth wanting more. That good. Haven't aged it, a bottle is in the cellar. A follow up in the works. Head...spinning...so...good...

Served in an Urthel tulip glass.

I was told this stuff has aged very well, so I had to see it for myself. It pours a clear sunset amber topped by over a finger of dusty cream foam The nose comprises toffee, dark fruits, light maple syrup, figs, raisins, orange zest, pumpernickel spices, rye bread, and a touch of sweet flowers. The taste consists of a blast of dark-fruited sweetness, with veins of vanilla and maple syrup rolling through the proceedings. It reminds me of a yeasty, hoppy madeira or some sort of PX-based sherry with a much lighter body. It's unlike any tripel I've ever tasted, but it's not actually bad, just unnervingly irreverent (I guess that's a nice, poetic, and pointless way of putting it, right?). The body is a straight medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a slick feel. Overall, a strange, surprising brew, one that I could see both enjoying and tearing down for being different from my expectations at the same time.

A: Pours a hazy gold with a thin white mousse. I would have preferred to see greater head retention, but as this bottle has been cellared for some time, I would be asking a bit too much. Still, it looks nice.

S: Aromas of orange, lemon, and spice are present on the nose. As the beer warms, there is a slight alcohol aroma, but nothing too off-putting. This smells simpler and much more mellow than many tripels, but I kind of feel that the simplicity and sweetness of the nose sets this tripel apart from the mostly bitter tripels that have become popular in recent years.

T: Notes of mandarin orange, lemon, white pepper, grass, herbs, and coriander are balanced by a quick punch of warming alcohol. The finish is fruity and spicy with lemon, orange, and coriander notes dominating. Very straight-forward and approachable, but with just enough depth to be memorable.

M: Full bodied, dry, and rather firm. Carbonation is still surprisingly crisp and prickly. Alcohol sharpness is moderate, but is not distracting.

O: This is a very nice tripel, one that is neither too sweet nor too bitter. It's a real shame that De Leyerth has retired this ale. If you can find a properly stored bottle of this, give it a shot.
