Notes:
Pilzilla is a beer that I've been brewing for years. Each year it gets bigger and bigger. Nicknamed "The beer that took over Tokyo". It is an unfiltered Keller Bier. Nicley hopped at this point with 6 to 7 different kinds of hops and about 6.25 % alc. Each year we will add another variety of hop and bump the alc a bit. This is not your average pilsner, get it before we drink it all! Prost!!

On tap a Capone's, this one comes out with an ample white head lacing ok and a ton of carbonation. Color is on the yellow orange side. When you bring this to the nose you will smell hops and a lot. Many different hop smells from grapefruit to grassy pine. The taste is hoppy at first and then seems to calm down some, had a hard time tasting the grains. This is a hopped up Pils to say the least. Good mouth feel except for the slight over carbonation. I enjoyed this beer but would limit myself to one at a time. Later

22 oz bottle. 6.7% ABV. 50 IBU

This beer poured a hazy, golden, light-amber color with white foam that was moderate in height and settled to a thin layer but clung to the glass leaving some lacing. The smell was modest but with a sweet malt aroma and light aromatic hops. The taste was sweet up front followed by some aromatic noble hops flavors. Modest bitterness as it is overpower somewhat by the sweet maltiness. The flavor of alcohol could also be discerned. The finish left the taste of hops together with some grainy malt. The body was medium to medium-full with low overall carbonation feel and a sweetness throughout. Hops lingered in the finish. This was not an unpleasant beer, but unlike any German Kellerbier I have had in Germany, and too strong and sweet to be a Pils, though it could fit into the Imperial Pilsner category. I had this beer on my Wants list for over 5 years, and I am glad I finally got to drink a bottle.

Golden colored and hazy. A small frothy foam head sits on top but fades rather quickly.
For all the carbonation here it does nothing to invigorate the head. A taller denser head would do wonders for the appearance.

I was expecting a better nose. Something along the lines of hoppy spicey pils but I don't get that. Instead it's more of a muddle. Some hops can be percieved butnot much. It's malty and has a sutle toasted malt smell.

The flavor is kinda of flat and muddled too. I was hoping crisp and sharp.
It is hoppy and it is malty and it is bitter but seem like they don't work together.
Drinks thin and flat. Border line lame.

Registering at 7%, the Voodoo pilsner isn't your father's lager. But it is a scaled-up German-style lager that doesn't back off of the proportions. High malt means high alcohol, and high hops to balance. Ya gotta bring your drinkin' shoes for this one!

Pouring a very un-lager-like medium amber color, the tinge of burnt orange and honey may better suggest IPA. It's building head yields a broken sheet of transparent foam to skirt the surface. But where head formation is light, its retention and fishnet lace is quite sexy.

Grain sweetness and earthy character captivate the nose with its mild caramel, raw honey, tobacco, and leafy aromas. Other attributes of lemongrass herbs, sandalwood, and grain must offer muted nuances before the woody hops set in. Fresh shaven bark, light pine, and an overall herbal and minty overtone speaks to the complex hop complements.

The part-grain, part malt taste kicks things off with an even-keel balance that's both sweet, spicy, and rustic in a slightly rye-like kinda way. Immense malt contributions easily bridge bread, dough, and yeast and nearly reach honey-like taste. Stopping shy of pale ale, the beer allows a strong hop presence to steal the show. Minty, woody, grassy, spicy, tea leaves and earthen- the beer is all Saaz-this, Tettnang-that, and with a sprinkle of Speltm, Haullertau and a host of others to create the tobacco, leather, and sassafras flavors that lead into bitterness to signal the beer's finish.

Surprisingly light, yet the Kellerbier registers medium on the palate due to its relatively large body for a lager. But the beer has a slow and lumbering fade from early sweetness and mild creaminess toward a finish of earthen spice and semi-dry warmth.

Compared to the traditional lagers of Germany, this upscaled and asserted version tramples the taste buds and never apologizes for it. It's bold for its own sake and dares you to revel in it. It's a seriously taste lager that will find favor with any fan of IPA- just remember this beer has European roots.

tap

Pours a mostly clear gold with fine white head.

Nose is light grassy malts with citrus hop undertones.

Bitter grassy malt with citrus hops and mildly bready malts.

Medium body with a tingly carbonation on the tongue.

Very drinkable flavorful lager, easy to enjoy, would go good with food or on its own, would definitely have this again.

On tap at Piper's Pub the other day.

The beer pours a slightly hazy gold color with good head retention and considerable sticky lacing all around. The nose is impressive as well, as I pick up considerable cookie dough and white pepper, with some underlying honey and fresh grass as well. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely in this hoppy beer, and it just seemed as if everything was magnified in this beer. The flavor profile starts out as if the beer will be fairly sweet, with considerable cookie dough and honey. Then the hops kick in, and so the finish is dry, peppery and bitter. Mouthfeel is a bit lean, but I think that works fairly well in this beer. The finish is long and bitter, with some noticeable alcohol as well.

An interesting enough beer, but I prefer the lower alcohol, more drinkable versions from the Vaterland.

Pilzilla is very delicious. It's like a pils on steroids and I guess could be called an Imperial Pilsner. I like the smooth character and the lagered taste yet it is much more robust. The head sticks around for a good long time and plenty of lacing clings to the side of the glass. I wish there were more around like it.

12oz bottle, now up to 7%. Big thanks to my buddy Drew for sharing this one - probably the lager I've been wanting the longest.

A: Clear amber body under a thin, wispy off-white head. Rather weak.

S: Intense and well-balanced, with high doses of everything: crackery malt, herbal hops, and mineral-laden yeastiness. The hops are particularly impressive. Excellent.

T: Toasty malt up front, fruity yeast midway through, and some earthy, herbal hop bitterness on the finish. Definitely on the heavy side for the style, but really enjoyable.

M: Light-to-medium bodied with moderate, swelling carbonation. Quite nice.

O: I like it. Not quite great, but very good indeed.

Cheers!
