This Is our Imperial Stout that we age in conditioning tanks with oak staves. This adds a classic character of old world aging with out the Bourbon tones. This black ale is about 12% alc. and very rich in roasted and chocolate malt tones. Velvety smooth and able to be aged for years.

I've had this in bottles and on tap several times. It's a great stout, and a nice PA staple.
Dark brown-black pour with a moderate tan head; decent retention and lacing for a higher ABV beer. Dark roasty malts in the nose, coffee, cocoa, toasted grains, burnt caramel. These aromas are reflected in the taste, dark malts, roasted coffee, toasted grains, woody, ash, chocolate, subdued but noticeable hop presence in the background. Nice body, smooth mouthfeel, minor alcohol heat, an easy enjoyable drinker.

Have had this beer in bottle before, but the other day at Capone's was the first time I got to try it on tap.
The beer pours a dark black brown color with very good head retention and lacing. On tap this beer isn't nearly as boozy as I recall the bottled version tasting, though there is still a pronounced aroma of leather, cherry vanilla, chocolate and coffee. In fact, there is a lot more coffee aroma in the draft version then I recall finding in the bottle version. On the palate, there's no doubt this is one serious stout. Flavors are intense and pronounced, consisting of leather, coffee and licorise, with a hint of dark chocolate and noticeable hoppy bitternes in the finish. As in the bottled version, there is almost a coffee ground flavor and consistency to this beer, and it has a long, long finish. Furthermore, although there is some sweetness to this beer's flavor profile, the finish is pretty dry and hoppy. Drinkability is OK, though once again I could feel a warming sensation after half a glass of this stuff. Regardless, this is a very good stout.

Served on tap at the most recent Capones beer promo day featuring the beers of Voodoo. Had an enjoyable conversation to boot with Matt Allen who gave us the history of Voodoo and some of their big beers in particular.
A - Pretty much jet black with a nice espresso head that was billowing out the top of the glass.
S - Lots of roasted goodness going on here with big scents of roasted malts, chocolate, oak, and earthness.
T - Largely follows the nose with big flavors of the aforementioned "stuff". I found this to be nicely balanced and the alcohol never really disturbed this one by exhibiting too much of a presence.
M - Rich and velvety. It was all good.
D - My lowest of the ratings here in that this is one to be a sipper on a nice fall night. You certainly can't do to much of this without feeling the impact I guess. Share the bottle.
A really good beer made by a guy who hopefully is going to be really successful and around for a long time. Matt did say that these babies will keep for a good long time. I have 3 bottles that I will start bringing out next fall. Can't wait.

A: Poured absolutely jet black. Only the faintest hints of a deep brown head. This beer did not really have much head to retain but it did keep a faint whisper around the edges.
S: Really great nose on this. This smells like a big beer. I think I prefer Black Magick to this though. You could smell the wood in this but unlike other wood aged beers it really did not dominate. You could actually get a nice smell of the base beer. Just a touch of hops as this version was dry hopped with Simcoe. Really nice.
T: Again like the nose the balanced between the barrel and the beer was incredible. Tons of roast, chocolate and a little bit of alcohol burn. It really was never overwhelming and was always smooth. Again I think I prefer the Black Magick though. The barrel really balanced this out and reigned in some of the more angular notes of this beer. The hops gave it a little kick that reminded me of Darkness.
M: Really nice and full mouthfeel that never really felt heavy on my tongue. The carbonation was very nice and subtle.
D: A really great beer. While this was probably a better crafted beer I preferred the wild animal that is it's bigger brother. I have really enjoyed all the beers that I have drank from these guys.

On tap at the KSBF '08.
Poured a dark black color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of wood, smoky, coffee, and chocolate. Tastes of wood, the same smokiness, coffee, earthy, light vanilla, and chocolate. Light alcohol finish. I didn't really get any bourbon in this.

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter
A- Black with a small tan head.

T- Chocolate, caramel malts, coffee, some licorice, piney hops, charred oak, some smoke, touch of alcohol. Well balanced.
M- Smooth, full body, some creaminess.
O- A great stout that is really easy to drink for 12% ABV. Nice complexity with good balance, very enjoyable. Would love to have this again.

Pitch black inky body with a nice 1/2" of sandy colored head.
The smell has a lot of chocolate malt. I also pick up black licorice and a piney hop and a little bit of cola.
The flavor is very vivid and robust. Heavy with the chocolate with supporting flavors of anise, wood, and piney/earthy hops. There's also a nice taste of coffee.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Low carbonation lends to the full and creamy body.
This was a fantastic stout. It has incredible depth in the flavor. The 12.5% is noticeable but it's still smooth for such a big beer.

A- pours pitch black with a 1 finger tan head. Random bubbles and blotches on the glass.
S- huge chocolate, marshmallow, roast, and faint coffee
T- roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, slight menthol flavor and some pine.
M- full body and medium carbonation. Smooth and very easy drinking at 11%.
O- very good RIS. Very nice blend of chocolate and roast. Would love to try this barrel aged!

From a bottle ordered from Letspour.
Pours black with small brown head...poured in a St Bernardus chalice.
Aroma of dark roasted malts, lactose, Brazil nuts, bitter chocolate.
Moderate carbonation and strong mouthfeel.
Flavors of dark roasted malts, burnt malts, bitter chocolate, chalk, slight liquid smoke...there's a dryness...I'll give it a few minutes...
Oooh...strong in flavor, bold and bitter...a big mix of hops, malts and alcohol. I might have been wise to age this a few more months, but nah...it drinks well now, but is rougher than a Great Divide Yeti or Alesmith Speedway Stout.

Big old thanks to Hessian257 for this bottle!
What an appropriate name... pitch black with a creamy finger of pale brown head that retains quite well, leaving behind thick sheets of lace and distinctive alcohol legging. In terms of appearance, the ABV is less than discrete.
Loads of roast on the nose, reminiscent of Ten Fidy in some ways. Vanilla and toffee with hollow coffee notes. Plenty of darker chocolates, powdery cocoa.
Creamy mocha flavors with a massive, sweeping roast character. Semisweet dessert flavors are balanced with a bitter chocolate/coffee ground profile. Nice booze kick right at the tail end of things.
Awesome.

Pours inky black with a small tan head. Very little retention and minimal lacing.
Aroma is very roast heavy. Lots of roasted coffee and other dark malts. Dark chocolate and maybe a bit of fig and raisin with some anise in the background.
More of the same flavor wise. Very dry and roasty throughout. Big coffee notes along with some bitter dark chocolate flavors. Raisin, a bit of oak and perhaps a hint of smokiness come along for the ride too. A little earthy hop bitterness near the end.
Thick mouthfeel. Extremely dry and roasty. Finishes like licking a coffee filter. In other words, just about perfect. Alcohol is noticeable, but doesn't overpower the flavors.
Wonderful aggressive beer. I was pleasantly surprised at this one that for some reason has been sitting in my cellar longer than most. A great bit dry stout which is right up my alley.

22oz. bomber bottle with a cool abstract painting of a street in New Orleans (?). There's a man in the corner wearing a zoot suit. He's ready for a night on the prowl. Flanking the painting is the Government warning, the beer's ingredients and specifications, a description of the beer, and Voodoo's story. The only thing missing is a vintage date. They'll give you the beer's IBUs, but they won't give you a bottled date.
When poured into a Cigar City snifter, the beer stayed true to its name. It was big and black as jet black ink. It was so thick and black that light avoided this beer. The head of foam wasn't as impressive of the color. The initial head of foam was about 1/4 of an inch in height and coffee brown in color. It had fast retention that only managed to leave behind a handful of spots around the glass.
The first aroma that popped out was that of the finely roasted coffee grounds. After that was the dark roasted malts. When the malts had their turn, the aroma then finishes up with baker's chocolate, a subtle caramel sweetness, a dark fruit or two, and a whiff of black licorice.
The taste came on strong and dry with dark roasted coffee grounds and dark roasted malts. At least it's staying true to its name. After the roasted elements had their fun in the taste, in comes the baker's chocolate, a scoop of raisins, a drop of caramel, charred oak, and with a subtle roasted hop bitterness at the end. Even though it's not barrel aged, the oak taste was interesting.
The mouthfeel was thick, dry, and roasted. The aftertaste was filled with more roasted coffee grounds, roasted malts, charred oak, and baker's chocolate. This aftertaste will linger on for quite a long time. It will take a few glasses of water to wash away this thick aftertaste. This beer doesn't bother to mask its 12% ABV.
This isn't the type of beer that hides behind its cool label. It's a really good beer with a really cool label. I said it before and I'll say it again. This beer stays true to its name. Would I drink it again? Oh yeah!

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a Koningshoeven chalice.
A: Little to no head, faint tracing on the surface. Completely opaque, except at the cola-coloured edges.
S: Chocolate malt, hint of coffee or licorice. Slightly subdued, but pleasant.
T/M: Mmmm. This is delicious. Rich, thick, and decadent...Hints of bourbon-strong undercurrents, bitter dark chocolate, and perhaps a touch of fruit (dates? currants?). The aftertaste is luxurious.
M: As above, very smooth, but with a bitterness that sticks out a little.
O: I thoroughly enjoyed nearly every aspect, but it's somewhat unmemorable. Recommended, but I'll probably never seek it out again.

Bottle (I believe it is a 2011 vintage but there is no bottle date) in to HFS sniffer
A: pours black as night with almost no carbonation definitely motor oil status there is the smallest bit of mocha lacing on the outside but other then that there is no head to speak of. It is also completely opaque with literally almost no light coming through.
S: There is not much to smell here at all I do get a scent of dark fruits and hints of alcohol but that is about the only thing that I can smell
T: The taste does not really follow the nose at all as there are some hints of dark fruit in the opening there is a much larger presence of mocha flavor that is definitely more toward the dark chocolate side then coffee but the coffee does have a fairly solid presence throughout. This taste of mocha chocolate builds then slowly fades with some hints of the dark fruit coming back but mostly just the mocha flavor which fades slowly and lasts for a fairly long time after each sip
M: The mouthfeel is smooth and very oily there is very little carbonation, but the alcohol is hidden very well for 12.5% I can't detect it at all, this makes it very drinkable for such a big imperial stout.
O: This is a really good beer from the scent i was concerned but this is a well balanced not overpowering but very tasty big imperial stout. All I can really say is well done if you like a big tasty imperial stout give this a try it is a very solid representation of the style and quite enjoyed it.

Review from notes, bottle shared with friends at a tasting/dinner.
Poured jet black, absolutely no light shines through. The ebony body is topped by a brown hat that sits, refusing to budge. An abyss that taunts and commands your olfaction to come hither. Intense aromas of dark chocolate, fudge, caramel creme, burnt toast, and cocoa powder smother the bulbs. You may feel like you've just sipped the beer, but you've only sniffed it from 4 inches away. Take a small swig. That first experience is a sweet, caramel/toffee flavor with a hint of molasses and malt. As this black elixir creeps back, it stimulates and titillates places in your cognition you have never known to exist. The excitement and overwhelming joy is remarkable. A touch of burnt toast, charcoal, and dark chocolate is more prominent now and in fact, is the most prominent part of the entire experience. As the tale draws to an end, we experience the trails of dark chocolate, ash, and cocoa blended with dark fruits such as dried figs and dates. Throughout the whole voodoo experience, we note that the body is thick and viscous, like the thoughts of one who has experienced voodoo. There is a part of me that yearns for freedom through effervescence, yet embraces the milder carbonation that suits this beer so well. All in all, we have here a spectacular example of an imperial stout. Nearly perfect in all regards. I highly recommend this brew.

Voodoo Brewing Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Poured into my Boulevard tulip from a 22oz bottle.
Pours a slightly oily nice pitch-black color. There is a nice half-inch tan head. Awesome creamy retention leaving some nice sticky lacing as it goes down the glass. (4.0)
Starts off with delicious milk chocolaty sweetness, fudge notes a plenty. One of the better smelling stouts out there. The aroma reminds me of D.O.R.I.S. from Hoppin’ Frog. There is a nice slight coffee note to the brew mixed in with the fudgy sweetness and a slight grassy finish on the back end. (5.0)
Flavor follows the nose pretty similarly. Starts off with nice chocolate notes. There are milk chocolate notes with some good slight bitter dark chocolate. The brew is very malty and there is a nice sweetness to it compromised of slight caramel notes. The ABV is present but not overwhelming, definitely not a noticeable 12% brew. There is some nice burnt woodnotes and some good smoke throughout the middle of the brew and the back end. There are also some grassy hop notes and bitterness present but nothing too distracting form the awesome malty mess. This brew has such and enduring flavor profile and finish. Quite sticky and full bodied. (4.5)(4.5)
Overall this brew is delicious and a top notch Double Stout. Great malt sweetness and cocoa notes. There is awesome smoke and roast notes with some coffee and some sweetness as well. As the brew warm there is more roast present and the sweetness is subdued a bit. Overall Excellent brew. (4.5)

650ml bottle 12,5% Abv.
Served lightly chilled in an over sized wine glass.
2011 Vintage
Thanks to Futura123 for this bottle.
Appearance: A rough pour yields a small, creamy tan coloured head atop what appears to be a pitch black beer, however a back light shows a fair amount of deep red along the edges of the glass. The head displays average retention for the abv, and leaves a few small patches of lacing. A swirl coats the glass in light alcohol legs.
Smell: The initial nose is outstanding, offering big notes of chocolate and roasted malt, along side smaller amounts of coffee and cocoa. Oddly, as the beer begins to warm, the nose seems to deteriorate somewhat and feels a little flat. The chocolate character is lost and strong aromas of toasted grains as well as a dark fruit character and a hint of liquorice are noted.
Taste: As expected, the flavour leans slightly towards the roasted/bitter side of things, but still displays a big underlying sweetness that is noted periodically. Flavour notes include: Roasted malt, some char, chocolate, a little coffee, sweet dark fruits, dark caramel, molasses, toasted grains and a little liquorice. There is almost no trace of the 12,5% noted.
Mouthfeel: As with the rest of the beer, the mouthfeel is good, but not outstanding. The body is just shy of full, with a medium level of fairly smooth carbonation.
Overall: Big Black Voodoo Daddy is a good (almost great) imperial stout, but just lacks a wow factor. That said, I would happily drink it again in the future.

Purchased through Beerjobber fresh from the brewery.
(360 calories)
Price $29.99/two 22oz bombers
I've really been looking forward to trying this for awhile. An old world ale without the bourbon.
As expected, this one pours pitch black like ink with a lite tan creamy 1/2 inch head. It doesn't take long for the covering to dissipate to a silky sheen with a thick outer ring. As the chalice empties a decoration of lacing begins to unfold and adds to the allure of a quality RIS.
The aroma is fairly strong and dead on for the description. Bakers chocolate, coffee grounds, vanilla, charred wood and a hint of burnt raisins.
On the tastebuds, a big blast of roasted malt, vanilla and coffee start things off followed by black licoric and spices. I'm picking up very little sweetness in both taste and smell but it seems to work well here.
The mouthfeel starts out soft and creamy but slowly creeps it's way to a bitter dry finish thanks to the pine hops. Medium body which matches this beer head on. In the end soft carbonation and a noticeable alcohol warming is felt.
Overall not mind blowing but pretty damn good and potent as well. Look to sip this one on a winters night.

22 oz bottle courtesy of Raznug pours a deep, rich black color with a smallish cap of brown head. Decent retention and lots of lace.
Nose is cocoa powder and dark fruit. Molasses, chocolate, marshmallows and maybe a hint of anise. Smells reallly good, all things sweet and rich.
Taste shows off a more roasty side with more of a dusty cocoa as opposed to chocolate. Hops make an appearance with a fairly substantial bitterness on the finish. Im surprised at how much drier it tastes than it smells, much to my dismay. The mouthfeel is not nearly as full as I expected either, though the ABV is well hidden. Id like to try it fresher I guess to see if it might be better, though the hops as is make me think they would be beastly.

Pours a very dark brown, bordering black color with a medium sized tan head that recedes to leave some decent lacing.
Aromas begin roasty and charred, up front, with rich chocolate tones and a hint of dark brownie or pudding. Coffee and espresso notes emerge more and more as it warms.
The tastes follow the nose with overly roasted, charred, almost smokey maltiness. Then you get some bakers chocolate and milk chocolate that brings some sweetness. As it warms there is some emerging vanilla and a touch of dark fruit.
The mouthfeel is quite full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. The finish is quite roasted, bitter and drying with emerging alcohol.
Overall this was a fine example of a RIS but it fails to blow me away in an way, shape or form. It's super solid but the roasted, charred bitteness is a bit much more me and I wish there was a little more sweetness but it is an RIS so I won't ding it there, it just doesn't wow me or make me want to revisit anytime soon.

Happy International Stout Day and thank you to Thesevenduffs!
Appearance. Pours thick and black with just a few strands of bubbles that rise up.
Smell. Dark roasted malts and molasses, some nice woody vanilla and dark chocolate with a drop of espresso.
Taste. Semi-sweet dark chocolate, some dark roasted malts and a hint of molasses and smoky wood. The semi-sweet chocolate lingers in a great way. High abv is noticed, but covered quite well.
Mouthfeel. On the lower side of full bodied with a lowish amount of carbonation.
Overall. A hig quality big stout right here. Perfect for celebrating this, the greatest of all holidays...

Pours a sludgy black with a small tan head.
Smells quite floral with hints of perfume and some dark fruit notes...alcohol in the nose detracts.
Nice roasted grapefruit flavors up front that go into dark chocolate and hints of coffee and caramel...I get just a hint of the oak, which is perfect. Again the alcohol seems a bit out of balance.
Thick and heavy body with low carbonation.
A good, but boozy imperial stout. I like it and would drink it again if offered.

Poured this one into a Bruery Tulip. Deep, dark, all light sucking black. Highlight don't exists on this one. Head is a large two fingers with a light cocoa color and creamy in appearance. Lace is super stick and quite nice.
Smell is pretty dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, charred wood, ash. There is some sweetness here too. No alcohol in the nose.
Taste is, wow!, pretty nice. There are the same notes I got from the nose. Milk and bitter chocolate, roasted coffee beans, mild flavors of smoked pete moss. I am also getting some tart fruits, figs, dates. There is just a hint of alcohol at the end too.
Mouth is rather light for such a huge beer, carbonation is medium. The feel is rather thin and the finish is medium and not as wet as I would like it to be.
Overall I first need to thank masterhomebrewer for this bottle, that I received in a trade almost two years ago. This is one hell of an Imperial Stout. The first taste reminded me a lot of Stone IRS hopped up on booze, but as it warmed it became it's own flavor profile and was quite a nice surprise. I don't know if this gets better with age because I've never had it new but it does taste great with some age on it. Get your hands on one of these if you can. A must try.

Been sitting in the fridge for a month, time to open! Oily black pour yields minimal head. Bourbon oaky aroma melds with dark chocolate and roasted malts. Aroma is the strongest part of the brew.
Deep, bitter cacao character as the dark chocolate overwhelms everything else in the flavor profile. Dry and boozy at the end, warming alcohol soothes the throat after each sip.
Massively over-carbonated though, and that significantly detracts from the sinking experience. A solid RIS, wouldn't buy it myself though.

Pours an oil slick black body beneath the half inch mocha head that leaves a thin layer of lacing around the perimeter of the glass.
Aromas of roasted coffee and sweet chocolate malt float from the glass. Just a touch of woody spice as it warms.
Warm flavors of roasted coffee and sweet chocolate greet the palate. Faint woody notes are present as well with some earthy hops. In the background is a touch of licorice and some charred malt.
Robust mouthfeel with medium carbonation and a warming boozy finish.
A huge and tasty Imperial Stout with tons of character to entertain the senses and nice woody notes as it warms.
