14% ABV confirmed - jesus! 11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with cool green and black label and branded pressure cap served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are very high; Mikkel is my favourite brewer in the world.
Served straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
A: Pours a one finger beige colour head of nice cream and thickness, and incredible (4+ minute) retention for the ridiculously high ABV. Body colour is a murky hazy tangerine orange. Abundant yeast particles float throughout. Translucent but nontransparent. Appealing and impressive for the style considering the high ABV. Definitely bottle conditioned. I'm excited to try it. No bubble show.
Sm: Biscuity hops, floral hop character, muted orange/tangerine citrus, biscuity yeast, milky notes, and heavy grassy grainy notes. No alcohol is detected - quite a feat at 14%. Wow. Quite appealing. Sweet caramel. Resiny as hell. Earthy natural hops. It's a rounded, sensical hop aroma - not a ridiculous overbearing American style IPA aroma. Moderate in strength. Generally appealing for the style, if a bit timid.
T: Phew. Nectary and biscuity up front with earthy natural floral hop notes throughout and a pleasant citrus zing on the climax. It hits hard on the open, but blossoms throughout the body - sort of an invert structure to that of many poorly executed American IPAs which are great until the finish where the bitterness hits; this one gets the bitterness out of the way - grabbing you - and then rewards you with a pleasant ride. Milky like an aged saison. Nectary. Refined. There's definite bright fruit here, but it comes off fermented. A bit of alcohol, sure, but nowhere near the level you'd expect. It's actually pretty damn drinkable considering the ABV. I wouldn't call it boozy or hot; there's just an alcohol presence. Biscuity yeast yields light earthiness. Heavily grassy and layered; the body is all grass with some fruity and malty sweetness aiding the balance. And it is balanced, by the way - impressively so. Here's a bold aggressive imperial IPA that's trying something new, not copying Russian River. I like it, even if a bit of age is evident. Might be a bit too sweet - almost approaching wheatwine levels of sweetness in terms of the hop balance. Fresh squeezed orange juice/pulp comes through more and more as it warms. This one grows on you. Never too bitter.
Mf: A dash of coarseness right on the open; you don't see that often. After that it's smooth sailing: smooth, wet, and refreshing. This beer's got one hell of a body too; it's heavy on the palate without feeling overbearing. Carbonation is perfect.
Dr: Somewhere between a sipper and a refreshing IPA. Hides its ABV pretty well - impressively well - but you're still aware of it. This'll get you drunk; that's for damned sure. Great to see the best brewer of our time pushing imperial IPAs like no one else is. Worth trying for the innovation and mastery. I'd love to try it on-draught. I wouldn't have another one, because it would put me on the floor, but maybe on a different night. It drinks differently than many IPAs; this isn't one you can gulp.

Pours a hazed almost milky looking burnt orange infused gold with no head to speak of,it's unfiltered I know but the lack of head was off to me.Whoo alot of sweet alcohol over top of citric hops, the alcohol is your face here.Alcohol is so predomianat that it makes it kinda hard to get anything else on the palate, some resiny hops come thru as it warms but not enough to overcome the alcohol. This may be a case of a bad bottle, high reviews and the reputation of the brewery makes me think something went awry here. The bottle I have is not quite a drain pour but just isn't right I don't think and/or hope.

Poured from a 33cL bottle into a brandy snifter. Stamped 310722. From notes. Reviewed 28 November 2012.
A: Virtually no head. Murky brown and opaque, though the edges let through a sickly, yellow glow.
S: Rich, earthy hops. Or old American hops. Dangerously deep, it entices the nose into tumble into what seems like an abyss, but is a short splash away. Some citrus.
T: Mmmm. Uplifting and delicious. Hugely boozy, but this is only apparent after many sips. No element is particularly noticeable (or notable) but the entire production is divine. A perfect blend of neutral-sweet malt and old-bitter hops, both are huge, and neither has the upper hand. Still, the balance is somehow a bit...dull?
M: Thick and rich; pleasant and engaging.
O: A phenomenal DIPA and another great success from Mikkeller. Extreme, but not even obviously so. Drinkable, ensnaring, and recommended.

appearance: hazy apricot. surprisingly full head on the given (given a 14% abv). recedes to wisps. it does look inviting.
smell: wow, this buzzes with tropical fruit. i expected razor sharp hops and a sweetness from the heavy abv but this deep fruit is a welcome surprise.
taste: wow again. the taste delivers too. different than the nose. the booze asserts itself but isn't overpowering. Citrusy hops, a strong malt backbone and to a lesser degree than the nose - fruit.
overall: quite an outstanding beer.
