Pours a two finger khaki head that fades slowly to a thin layer leaving a good lace. Black color, no highlights. Good carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Chocolate nose. Flavor is sweet/baked chocolate but drier finish. Pricey at $6.00 for a 330ml bottle from Tully's Beer and Wine Wells, ME.

Poured into a pint glass. The beer pours black with a thick, creamy light tan head that retreats slowly Some prominent lacing is left on the side of the glass during consumption. The aroma is of dark roasted malts with some coffee. I don't get much sweetness in the smell, but it is there. The first sip brings some nice dark roasted malt with bittersweet chocolate. Then there's a roasty aftertaste of chocolate and coffee. There's a touch of vanilla. The body is medium with moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. This beer is highly drinkable. This is an excellent beer.

Poured from a 33cL bottle into a St Bernardus goblet. Stamped 10031230.
A: About a finger of loose, tan head. The body is dark brown.
S: There is a rapturous quality to the scent. Perhaps it's a touch of smoked malt or tinge of brilliant espresso. I'm leaning towards the former, but perhaps it's just dry roast. Also a hint of sweetness. I can't wait to taste it.
T/M: It's good. Really good. The foretaste is the bitter, roasted, chocolatey stout I was anticipating, but then the maintaste slides seamlessly into a creamy vanilla-sweet beer. I like the juxtaposed flavours.
O: This beer is constantly on the verge of being excellent, but never quite manages it. As Paddy Kelly once remarked, "He's on the borderline of genius; but he never trespasses!" Still, recommended and worthwhile.

Pours like a stout should thick and a nice amount of toffee colored head. The smell is sweet with a bit of milk chocolate, lite smoke and touch of malt. Wouldn't mind a little more nose on it but that is just me. Feels great in your mouth and taste smooth and delicious. I wish it was a larger bottle. Very nice refreshing stout. It would make a nice desert or breakfast stout. I could also enjoy this in front of a nice sunset. Now Im dreamin.. Up to my expectations. Mikkeller is always worth a try.

an interesting take on a milk stout, and I would have expected nothing less from mikkeller. this pours really dark brown, as close to black as you can get, with a reflective shine and an inch of lasting mocha colored head. the nose is not as sweet as some of the traditional milk stouts, and is actually almost bitter from burnt malt, tons of roast and a little smoke, also some nutty smells, like fresh toasted almonds. the flavor is more akin to the traditional milk stout, with some unfermented low dose sugars on the back end lingering a little bit, but this beer is so much more. some vanilla and booze notes, as well as a candied nut flavor that combines the best of earthy and sweet. the flavors are a little disconnected, which is the only reason I don't score this higher, but its a heck of an effort. lacking slightly in carbonation, it lets this beer open up with temperature. the body is full, but not thick at all, I think just about right for the style. what can I say? another exceptional and interesting brew from mikkeller, I know that gets repetitive, but is there a brewer out there right now producing so much interesting high quality beer? I don't think so. this is more for the adventurous than for the lover of the traditional, but if you know mikkeller at all, you already knew that...

6% ABV confirmed. 11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap acquired for $6.00 at a SoCal beer store and served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Mikkel is my favourite brewer in the world, so expectations are quite high.
Served after a period of rest following its removal from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
Imported by the Shelton Bastards.
A: Pours a four finger thick head of gorgeous dark tan colour, incredibly appealing cream, great frothy thickness, and excellent (9+ minute) retention. Body colour is a dark black. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Carbonation bubbles are abundant in the body, however, almost reminiscent of cola. Light lacing as the head recedes.
Sm: Cola, light roasted barley, dark malts, cream, and milky notes. I'm not real impressed; it's kind of like a schwarzbier meets a stout. A decent aroma. Pleasant enough. No yeast is detectable nor is any alcohol.
T: Dark malts, cream, cola notes, and even some bitterness. Imbalanced and lackluster for the style. Lots of residual sugars, true to style, but none are particuarly evocative. Bready. Milk chocolate. Cocoa. It's too sweet and lacks the roasted character needed to balance against that sweetness (that's the whole point of the style, after all). Lacks complexity and subtlety.
Mf: Slightly coarse, with an artificial smoothness up front. Wet. Pretty good carbonation. Poor palate presence. Sticky. Cola-esque. Sugary. Doesn't suit the flavours all that well.
Dr: A disappointment from my favourite brewer. Who knew Mikkel who create a stout this bad? I definitely wouldn't want another. Hides its ABV well, but it's difficult to drink given its low quality. Quite pricey as well (it's the Shelton Bastards, after all). This is to be avoided.
