this is easily the most bitter brew ive ever tasted, it almost hurts. the pour is darker amber in color with a few fingers of bubbly tan head that fades fast. some floating sediment in there too. the nose is not at all an indicator of how intense this is, it just sort of smells like a yeasty ipa, pine notes on the hop profile, and some caramel and crystal malt. the flavor though, holy crap. its really bitter ipa, like concentrated lemon and yeast, but you swallow, and its only just getting started. it slowly builds, getting ever more bitter, drying the mouth out like crazy, getting almost hot from the bitter burn, way way more then even the hop burn high. I thought the flavor of this was even more intense than the normal 1000 ibu, which I thought was a perfect specimen. this one isn't as balanced because the malt bill is cut down. you don't need alcohol sting when the bitter stings this bad. its almost pucker its so bitter, and it keeps with you for a long time. honestly needed to eat some chocolate because this was so powerful. good carbonation and just enough body. id imagine it more like 7%, but nope, it is indeed much less. I would never call this a light or an ultra beer, but holy cow, if you like bitter, you cannot miss this!

A - Hazy copper-orange with a finger of frothy slightly off-white head. Fades normal.

S - Grapefruit, orange, citrus, pine, grassy hops, sweet caramel and bready malts.

T - Grapefruit, orange, citrus, pine, grassy hops, resiny bitterness, sweet caramel and bready malts, some candied hops.

M - Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Smooth with a dry, bitter, resiny finish.

D - Really bold and hoppy. A bit resiny, but the boldness of it is nice.

Amber color, three fingers of a thick and fluffy head with good retention leaving traces and an everlasting thin lace, which is unusual for beers with this hop caliber.
Aroma is not aggressive as one would expect. Very resiny but also with notes of tropical fruits.
Very bitter taste but still pleasant, strong grapefruit and resiny. Hints of citrus and you also can still feel its malt despite of the hop predominance.
Aftertaste is utterly hoppy.
Initially thought it would be more of a onetime experience, but it is actually a nice hoppy beer for hop heads like me.

A - Burnt orange, one finger white head, good lacing. Dark for a pale ale.

S - Hints of grapefruit, bitter hops. Not much going on in the aroma.

T - Bitter hops that destroy the palate and cling to the back of my tongue. Long-lasting bitterness...that's it.

M - Smooth, medium-light body, moderate carbonation. The only redeeming part of this beer.

O - Novelty. Drain pour. That is what I get for going against my better judgement. Mikkeller is still in my top 3 brewers!

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of earthy and piney hops with distinctive bitter notes. Taste is a mix between some piney hops with distinctive earthy notes and light dry caramel malt. Body is about average with good carbonation. Quite bitter and hoppy as advertised.

Thanks to my brother for sending me this bottle. This bottle was labeled as 1000 Ultramate, which is the same thing as the 1000 IBU Light.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma has a ton of floral hops in it, as well as some grass and biscuit notes. The flavor is quite strange but I - unlike several of the people I shared the bottle with - enjoyed. I get the same floral notes, as well as a little bit of leather, grass and assorted spices. There is also a high amount of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

I certainly consider myself to be a hop head - I absolutely love the tongue shredding bitterness offered by a 150IBU IIPA, however I am still quite weary of the contents of this little bottle!

Appearance: This is actually a pretty good looking APA. The body is lightly clouded and a peachy orange colour with tinges of red. A rough pour yields a massive off white head that lasts pretty well and leaves some thick patches of lace on the way down.

Smell: Hmmm, talk about a wolf in sheep's clothing! 1000 IBU smells like a standard, well hopped IPA. Tons of citrus (sweet orange and grapefruit), peach juice, light tropical fruits (pineapple and mango) and a ton of pine resin and pure hop cones.

Taste: The initial millisecond on the tongue yields a lovely sweet honey character as well as some sweeter citric notes. These flavours are however quickly forgotten as an immense wave of tongue shredding bitterness engulfs all in its path. This is easily the most bitter substance I have put in my mouth! After a few sips, some resinous notes and a grapefruit pith flavour are noted along with the bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Due to the immense bitterness, the mouthfeel is quite hard to evaluate! The body is actually very light and quite watery and the carbonation is of a moderate level and pleasantly smooth.

Overall: Is 1000 IBU bitter? Hell yes, it is easily the most bitter substance I have consumed, but it is far from undrinkable! Personally I actually enjoyed the intense bitterness and would drink this again. I think this is certainly a must try for anyone who considers themselves a hardcore hope head!

On a side note, I gave a sip to a friend of mine who has never tasted an IPA - his expression was priceless :D

Bottle split with Volcanicbeat bought at Blackhearts and Sparrows. From notes.

A - Poured hazy dark gold with a nice one finger beige head. OK lace and a half finger of retention.

S - Honey, dank hops. Lot's of citrus. Smells like the aroma you get from rubbing hop flowers in your hands.

T - Hop tea. Some honey. Just all aggressive, violent hops.

M - Really bitter. Like really, really bitter.

O/D - A neat experiment, but obviously too bitter to be enjoyable. A good bitterness is nice but this was mental. The most bitterness I've ever experienced. An amazing feat to have pulled off, just not what most people would look for. Curious to try the DIPA version as this would clearly provide more body and maltiness.

I honestly don't know how to rate this beer since the style is technically a Pale Ale, but to me it's more of an experiment in extreme bitterness. The beer is very light in body and color, yet packs an intense and lasting bitterness which could cause an inexperienced beer drinker to cough or gag with disgust. I enjoyed trying a sampler sized glass and maybe understand how one could acquire a taste for this beer, but mostly it was something you kind of laugh at and move on.

A - Pale golden hue with a thin yet dense white head. Lacing follows.

S - Piney, earthy hops and nothing but.

T - Wow. Some serious tongue ripping bitterness here. Grass and pine hop flavours.

M - Light bodied, moderate carbonation. Insane bitterness.

O - An unbalanced hop beast clearly catered for the fanatics. Happy to have tried it but once is enough for me.
