Wow, look at that beer! Looks better than some lambics. Natural cherry-jam color, pinkish foam, great lacing.

What's up with this aroma? It smells like...an ordinary pilsner. I get noble hops and not a whole lot else....for all I know this could be a Spaten lager or something. A little more "fruity" as it warms, but still kinda disappointing to be honest.

Geez, it tastes mostly like a pilsner, too, albeit one with a little alcohol bite. OK...come on, there's got to be more to this. I'm getting some of the cherry and almonds...I don't know that I was prepared for this to be so subtle. I think the beer could be improved by dialing the noble hop back some. Hardly bad, though.

Pink tinted head and body more cherry brown hues in the body with hints of glowing amber....fine bubbled Belgian style lacing. Aroma has tart cherries malt forward bread and a mild nutty finish. It's one you sip when you really taste the almond skins, and earthiness with tart cherries in the finish complex fine ale I'm glad this was my locals last bottle. Brewed at De Proef, you can smell and taste the BELGIAN influence here friends. Earthy cherry cider with hints of almond think a high class amaretto liquor blended in your favorite Belgian sour ale. Mouthfeel is fine with the carbonation light flowing bubbles with a textured hint of syrup from residual sugars left behind in fermentation overall classic sour ale, I'm glad Mikkeller showed that he does have some finesse.

A - Hazy copper-brown with a finger of frothy off-white head. Fades fairly slowly.

S - Sweet caramel malts, cherries, almonds, and some bready malts.

T - Sweet caramel and biscuity malts, cherries with a touch of sourness, almonds, some residual sugars.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a sweet, warming finish.

D - Nice fruit beer. Good overall balance and mouthfeel.

super cool beer, like no other that i am aware of in existance. it has a pleasant pale pink color to it, with majorly active carbonation accumulating a few inches of bubbly almost see through head. the nose is more cherry than anything, yeasty too, with a saison sort of wildness to it, and an essentially nonexistant malt smell and taste. the almonds kind of vill the void left by the light malt, adding a unique and not so subtle nutty quality, with almost a vanilla and wood essence, although the cherry is the star of the show here, not sweet, not tart, just very flavorful and ripe. the yeast ties everything together, and the alcohol is barely there. it has a mouthfeel like champagne, effervescent, light, semisweet, but dry also. could gladly drink a bunch of these, which i rarely say of a fruit beer. classic stuff from mikkeller here, worth the price (i hate to say), of 15 odd bucks for a 12.7oz. bottle. its too interesting to pass up. also a beer your non hop loving girlfriend might get into...

This beer was served on tap at The Old Toad in Rochester, NY. It arrived in a snifter glowing a reddish cider coloring. It held a film of a white head, leaving creamy spots of lacing as the beverage disappeared. There was a thick haze throughout, with no sediment noted. Carbonation appeared active. The aroma gave pale and chalky grain, light grassy hops, and juicy cherry sweetness. With warmth came additional sweetness of candied apples, brown sugared walnuts, honey, and cooked caramel maltiness. White wine grape musk added sourness to the blend. Our first impression was that there was surprising bitterness to the front, but with a nicer feel and froth accompanying the finish. As we sipped, red apples with a lightly browned quality, big sugary juiciness, cooked brown sugar malts, warming cinnamon, and lactic creaminess started things. The swallow came to a peak of raw honey sugars and green apple skin pucker to balance, with must and mineral water to pull to the finish. Here we were met with paler malts, caramel saltiness, raw cinnamon stick, stark metallic yeastiness, and more and more funky bitterness to the yeast as it warmed. The aftertaste breathed of almond skins, fermented apple bitterness, light oakiness, vanilla bean metallics, and all the dryness, muskiness, and bitter grapeability of a long forgotten Chardonnay in the back of your dusty cellar. The body was light to medium, and the carbonation was higher. There was decent slurp and smack to the sip, with better froth and cream on the follow through of the swallow. Booze dried the tongue with a cooling air, following an initially wet coating. The abv is appropriate, and while this was definitely more of a sipper, it was refreshing by the end.

Overall, the best thing about this beer was the feel, which was actually quite dynamic. At the start things felt a bit thin, which isn’t helped by the tugging pucker of the fruit and musk. By the end of the swallow, however, there was great froth and foam to the back of the throat, helping bolster not only the body, but the fullness of the flavoring. The sourness was also a nice surprise, helping to not only cut, but to help curb that inherent heavy sugariness to the fruit. This is an interesting beer to try, but not something we would reach for every day.

Poured from a paper-wrapped 375mL bottle into an Allagash cervoise glass. Brewed at De Proef Bouwerj. Stamped 8891208.

A: A careless pour nets an overflux of lightly pinkish head which I'm compelled to siphon away. The beer is clear golden-brown, the color of unfiltered honey. Heavy, sticky lacing.

S: This smells like something, though what I could not say. No, wait, it actually smells like Heineken. Ugh.

T/M: The head taste great! Light yeast, tart cherries, and a subtle aftertaste of amaretto. The beer is similar, with a light tang and noticeable almond flavor. The beer is smooth and light, almost wine-like. The finish is moreish and smackworthy.

O: I really enjoyed this Mikkeller effort, and don't really understand the low ratings. I would have another, recommend, and generally approve. Well-made and interesting!
