A gem procured from a recent trade with joemcgrath27. Thanks man!!

A - Pours jet black, thumb of dark dark mocha head, solid retention and nice dark sheeting lacing.

S - Loads of musty cocoa, sweet cherries, wooden oak, hints of sweet bourbon and hints of espresso on the finish.

T - This one is rich on the palette, loads of musty cocoa and milk chocolate, the wooden oak and sweet bourbon notes come through nicely alongside hints of smokey peppers, vanilla, leather and burnt tobacco.

M - Medium bodied, smooth and sticky.

O - This stuff is insanely good, loads of flavour, super rich and a complex flavour profile. Unique and delicious and incredibly thankful this was included in the latest beer trade.

From my beer journal dated 5/2/12

Appearance: 12.7 oz bottle poured into a standard pint. Colour is a very dark, brackish-brown with a toffee coloured head that is two fingers in height. Leaves behind a nice thick lacing.

Smell: The burnt and roasted malts mix well with the sweet, boozy aroma fro the bourbon barrels. Overall, sweet, light, and malty.

Taste: Filled with roasted malts and some bitter yet spicy pepper flavours.

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied yet light and silky. Moderate level of carbonation. There is also a slight fiery heat.

Overall: Very interesting. The peppers add an odd dimension that is tasty yet perplexing. Definitely not your run of the mill porter but it is worth a try.

A - tar black, thumb of dark mocha head held its own and left a fairly consistent lace ring
S - dark coffee, burnt sugar, light smoky peppers, hints of oak and caramel burbon
T - starts with sweet caramel and espresso coffee, tobacco, subtle woody bourbon followed by a mild chipotle finish
M - medium and smooth, sweet tang followed by a mild smoky dry and just a hint of pepper heat
O - this definitely has less heat than the regular Texas Ranger, but the bourbon barrel aging definitely adds a sweet and woody character to it. Not sure if I can pick one over the other, both awesome!

A: poured a dark brown in color with brown highlights when held up to the light but had a thin head which ledt very little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: chocolate caramel were upfront on the aroma with smokey notes, bit of roasty chipotle pepper spice, and a wierd aroma that I could not quite put my finger on.

T: the taste was also filled with roasted chocolate malts, caramel, some oaky bourbon character, chiptole spice accents, and a touch of underying booze.

M: the brew was medium in body with a fair amount of carbonation which had a slight sweet, roasty, smokey, spicey, bourbon boozy, and silky finish.

O: actuallreally enjoyed this one all around and liked the spicey bourbon flavor.

Thanks for sharing! Supposedly this is the European version. I'm not sure if that's different from the one that hit the US.

A: Black with a big creamy brown head.

S: Burnt tire with ashy chipotle. Harsh charred oak and an unpleasant earth note. I get a little green apple as well.

T: Scorched earth and burnt rubber. There's some chipotle as well, I suppose, and a light spiciness. Harsh and astringent.

M: Full body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: Pretty bad. Harsh and artless. A charred burnt rubber mess.

375mL bottle thanks to Adam@Platinum Liquor.

Near motor-oil black with a sizable dark mocha head that looks impressive but falls apart quickly.

Aromas are driven by a refined leathery, roastiness. Plenty of tar, tobacco, baked caramel and chocolate overlaying subtle dark fruits. The Chipotle brings clarity and roundness.

Flavours follow the nose, with an added tickle from the chipotle creeping in. The smooth leatheriness from the bourbon barrel plays off the chocolate and fruit of the base porter without dominating. Finishes with a rather bitter roast character, like overextracted coffee or raw cocoa.

Medium, slightly oily mouthfeel with lowish carbonation and noticeable warmth - not sure if it's booze heat or chipotle.

Manages to calibrate the use of the barrel near perfectly. A bigger, creamier body might help to quash the charry bitterness, which is borderline unpleasant for mine.

375ml Barrel Ged Version.

A: A fairly dark color. Hard to get any head on this in my 20 oz. pint glass.

S: Sweeter then it tastes. For a 6.6% beer it smells sweet. Small amount of pepper on the nose.

T: Really nice smokey flavor backed up by the perfect amount (for me) of spicy pepper flavor. Chocolate matly goodnesss is also there to help balance things out. Not very bitter, but a bit of bittering bite. Little barrel flavor present.

M: Light mouthfeel with tons of flavor on the backend. A flat body leads to good times (in this case). Easy drinkiblity.

O: Not blown away, but simply satified. When you spend Mikkeller money you never know. I don't want to bring price into the picture during a review too much, but I'd try this again (although I know I probably won't get the chance). Cheers!

Surprisingly mellow compared to expectations. Black bodied with dark head, pleasant pepper and porter aroma. Not as spicy as others I have tried in the style. Good for style though not exceptional. Satisfying as it was, would not seek it out again. Good drinkability.A tad above average mouthfeel.

Review from notes. Consumed blind.

A: Pours a dark brown color with a small tan head on top. Nice retention leaving a foamy cap on top with decent retention.

S: Very nice bourbon presence, a little wood and vanilla with some chocolate. Very small hint of peppers right at the end.

T: Very similar to the aroma with nice bourbon flavor, wood/oak, and vanilla. Some roasted malt and chocolate in the middle, with some very slight heat/pepper on the finish.

M: Slightly thinner than medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Not has hot (spicy) as I was expecting, since chipotles usually have a nice kick to them.

O: A solid beer, my only complaint was that the peppers were not as prominent. Not sure if that is from being in the barrel or not.

A - This beer pours a very dark brown color, almost black. There is just under two fingers of dark tan head resting on top. The head has pretty good retention, and it leaves a nice sheet of lace behind on the glass.

S - The nose has a good amount of roasted malt and bourbon. There are also quite a bit chocolate aroma, as well as some aromas of coffee, vanilla, peppers, and booze.

T - The taste follows the nose pretty well. It starts off with a nice bit of roasted malt. There is a big bourbon presence as well as some oak. There are also some flavors of dark chocolate, a very mild chili pepper presence, and some coffee. The finish leaves some lingering roasted malt, bourbon, dark chocolate and booze behind on the palate.

M - This has a little less than a full body and good carbonation. It goes down easy and has a nice smooth feel to it. It has a nice bit of roasted bitterness as well as some sweetness. There is some very mild chili pepper heat, and there is some boozy warmth in the finish.

O - This has good drinkability. It goes down easy and has good flavor. Overall, I think it's a good beer and a nice example of barrel aging. I kind of wish there was a little more bourbon presence, I like it regardless. The chili presence, while mild, is still here and adds some nice complexity. I recommend trying it out.
