Black Tie was first dubbed Mandeøl (Man Beer). It was brewed for the Swedish market and only as draught beer. After spending four months in Scottish whiskey barrels and then being bottled it earned it's present name, Black Tie. Black Tie is an imperial stout with honey and smoked barley. Sweet, smokey and sophisticated - slick and sexy like a black tie.

Brewed at Nøgne Ø.

Consumed November 1, 2015.

Pours black, brown head, 1/5". The aroma was interesting, kind of like an ashtray aged in a whiskey barrel. They say its a Scottish whiskey barrel, but thankfully this isn't all peated up and shit. Well, at least not in the nose.

Taste offers up more of the smoke, roasted malt and whiskey barrel. The use of honey does seem to have had a drier effect on the mouth feel. Somehow they got the ashtray effect even drier here. Thought it hid the alcohol pretty well, and even though there were plenty of roasted, tobacco, chocolate malt and smoky notes to it, it was relatively smooth, in part due to the lower carbonation that was appropriate to do on this beer.

Mikkeller tends to be polarizing, they're expensive and don't really have too many recipes that they stick with. I enjoyed this beer and didn't think it was too challenging to drink. Would repeat purchase is more available and a bit cheaper.

Thanks Darrell!

Black body with a beige head that coats the glass in sticky lacing. Aromas of oak, scotch, chocolate. Scotch dominates the aroma and flavor, finishing with a tannic note. A hint of vanilla with lots of wood. Honey comes in mid to late palate, offering a sweetness that nicely counters the oaky nature of the beer. Pretty good.

Yikes, this was a real mess of a beer.

The scotch whiskey and char notes are so overpowering that it is difficult to even drink.

The mouthfeel is almost ashy.

This beer is not for me. Glad that it was something that was shared with me, rather than something I wasted my money on.

An intense beer. Good, worth trying, but I honestly thought the balance was a bit off. The alcohol was a bit too much and there was not enough complexity of the flavors. The smell and color are good. No real head but that's pretty typical of these types of beers. I think because this is barrel aged it has such an intense flavor and alcohol taste to it. If you like over the top beers you should like this. It's worth trying but don't expect much chocolate or coffee flavors to come out.

A - Blacker than black, one finger dark brown head, spotty lacing.

S - Oak, scotch, nuts, smoke, black malt.

T - Smoke, oak, roasted almonds, cocoa, brown sugar. Very woody.

M - Viscous, low carbonation. Heavy.

O - I love this beer so much. I will have to pick up all of the remaining bottles at Stateline Liquors asap.
