Poured into a Dogfish pint glass. No freshness date.

A- Pours a very murky brown color with a 1/4 inch light tan head that retains decently before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a light sheet of surface foam. Spotty lacing.

S- Very floral, pungent hop aroma with a semi-medicinal aspect. Very, very earthy.

T- Shot of grassy bitterness which then backs off leaving a smooth finish and a piney aftertaste. Alcohol springs up here and there but is mostly overshadowed by the hops. Also has a sweet malt duality that pulls everything together. Dank; there's no other word to describe it.

M- Oily and a bit sharp, but well-restrained without being too bitey or heavy. Full-ish body with medium carbonation.

O- Simply brilliant. Man, I love this guy!

Dark amber with a golden head into my glass. Appears very "thick". I expected something clearer though.

Sweet buttery malt with a faded hop profile that leans more towards pine resin than citrus. No bottling date.

Ditto on the flavor. It resembles the early stages of a barleywine with a mixture of raisin/plum, pine and maybe a bit of grapefruit.

Bitterness peppers the back of the mouth. Better than I expected.

The only difference that I think one will see from a fresh version is a slightly sharper alcohol burn and more pronounced bitterness.

Clear copper, bursting with hops and alcohol. Pine and resin, solventy alcohol on the palate along with citrus and pungent herbal hops. A little rough around the edges but still damn good. For those that make the distinction between Double IPA and Imperial IPA, this is clearly an Imperial IPA, but still plenty hoppy and dry enough that it strays from the Barleywine category.

Poured a decent head but quickly dissipated. No lacing. Overpowering stink smell... overpowering bad-taste taste. I'm not sure if I just got a bad bottle or if it's just not for me... way way too much hop flavor, way too much alcohol flavor, weird citrus thing going on... too much alcohol heat...

I love some DIPA's like Pliny, Sculpin and my favorite, Dogfish Head 90 minute, but this was just not for me...

A slight tan head covers this reddish-orange brew. Big resin and grapefruit initially. Caramel and light fruits add to the complexity. Sweet and to the palate up front with a decent hop shot in the middle. Sour fruits, a bit of grain and some phenols work themselves in. Heavy body with a slight alcohol heat. There are DIPA's and then are "big" DIPA's. This is without a doubt deep into the "big" DIPA category, which is a very good thing.

It's been a while since I had a beer like this...
Poured (into an 'ephemere' tulip) and put up a nice thick 2 finger head - the head breaks down into the thickly hazed brew to a thick surface film, leaving nice looking lacing -
- there's a nice big aroma of hoppy goodness in the nose - intense taste of pine, citrus and tropical fruitiness and hop resins with nice bitterness that sweetens on a thick malt backbone -
- mouthfeel works out with a prickly bitter hit of carbonation and hop oils on the tip of the tongue with a sticky sweet finish on the palate, begging to be cut by the next sip -alcohol taste and heat is very well hidden -
- this beer really 'wowed' me ! it reminded me of the first time I had a truly hoppy (to my newby palate) dipa - I think it was Southern Tier's Unearthly ( not the same anymore) - I finished this bottle way to quickly and wish I had another - I tried to use many beer related descriptors in this review... really good stuff -

11.2 oz. poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.
No date on bottle but my local shop just got this in today. Fresh off the truck. Thanks Freddy!

A - Hazy rust color with a light yellow head that forms an active cap. Below average lacing.

S - Dense yeasty esters. Mango is very powerful right up front, candied grapefruit, lychee, sweet orange, pineapple, cantaloupe melon, pine resin becomes more pronounced as it opens up. Thick toasted caramel malt is heavy underneath and adds to more sweetness.

T - The hops, malt, and yeast seem to all hit the palate at once. Hops follow the aroma and seem to stay on the edges of the malt. Tropical fruits up front and sides, some green pine on the back of the tongue. The rich caramel malt does not get pushed aside from the malt but adds very nice balance.

M - Full body, thick chewy feel, low carbonation. Finishes juicy, slick, and wet.

This beer lets the flavors of the hops shine more than the bitterness. Lots of juicy tropical fruit, sweet citrus, and some pine. Very juicy and wet.
A thick body and rich malt bill add lots of sweetness and seems like it almost needs a bit more bitterness to balance it out. But that is only nitpicking. This was a well rounded DIPA.

Pours a two finger cream head that fades slowly to a thin layer leaving a good lace. Hazy amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Grapefruit and caramel nose and flavor is sweet grapefruit and caramel. High ABV is hidden. Decent Imp IPA. Expensive but worth trying at $7.99 for a 330ml bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, Ma.

A: Hazy orange to copper. 1 finger khaki head with small and medium bubbles. Laces extremely well. Carbonation evident. Hop haze?

S: Caramel, guava, mango, peach, sweetness, lemon, slight alcohol, zesty, spicy and pine.

T: Holy shit. That is a major hop and alcohol bomb. This is one of the most intense beers I've ever had in my life. It is sooo overpowering with bitterness, alcohol warming and sugary, grainy sweetness. Some peach notes, little caramel but hop bitterness and alcohol mask the rest.

M: Alcoholic and sweet.

O: This is a once in awhile sipper. Such a hop bomb though that you wouldn't want to age it as it would lose it's punch. The bitterness and alcohol balance each other but there's too much of each for me to enjoy thoroughly. Once it warms up it's easier to ingest. Much better a few degrees over 50.

I Beat yoU from notes

A- Super hazy caramel colored pour. Half finger egg shell head that recedes to thin cap within seconds. Lacing is okay.

S- Candied sugar, bright citrus and slight floral presence. Sweet malts and slight alcohol in the back end.

T- Quick shift from super bitter, to sweet to slight alcohol in seconds. Bitterness is straight bitter than floral with a quick citrus finish. Slight alcohol warmth in the finish. Bitter lingering aftertaste.

M- Medium bodied, bitter with a lovely carbonation presence.

O- Good ipa/iipa, everything you could possibly want.

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Dark copper, rust, and orange in color with a thin off-white head that leaves a few dots of stick down the glass--but not much.

This has a very aggressive, strong aroma, with lots of citrus hop character, pine, and big notes of dominating, stinging alcohol.

The flavor follows a similar, unfortunate route, with big bitterness and hot, stinging alcohol dominating the big citrus and pine. There's tons of hop character here, but it's presented in an unpleasant fashion. There's also a chemical flavor as well that doesn't help much at all.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, though a bit oily.

I had a tough time working my way through my 10oz. glass.

A: Pours a clear copper with a thick off-white head.

S: Aromas of pine, spruce, bitter orange, grapefruit, lemon, caramel, and biscuits assault the nose. This is obviously going to be a hop monstrosity.

T: A bitter, resinous entry quickly gives way to notes of caramel, biscuits, pine, spruce, juniper berries, bitter orange, kumquat, grapefruit, carambola, ugli fruit, lemon, and lime. The finish is predictably long and bitter with notes of citrus and pine dominating.

M: Fairly full-bodied and initially dry, though it turns sticky just before the fade. Carbonation is pretty heavy, yet alcohol presence is restrained for the style.

O: This is a nice American DIPA that is substantially more adventurous than most. I loved the range and depth of the citrus flavors in this beer. I Beat YoU is well worth seeking out if you're a fan of this style.

Pours a light copper hue which leaves a two finger creamy head and clingy lacing here and there, the smell is a tropical punch bowl with pineapple, paw paw, passionfruit, kiwifruit and obviously piney hops, the mouthfeel is a touch syrupy, full bodied and chewy and could be easily mistaken for an American BarleyWine and has tastes of fresh honey beehive, caramel candy, resin coated piney hops,a light touch of guava and finished with a piney hop cross sticky toffee bittersweetness and overall a very nice double which is reasonably priced and would buy more of cheers.

Blind beer #4, 12 oz. bottle. Pours a very dark, golden brown, translucent, with a large off-white head that leaves lacing down my new half acre tulip. - 3.5

The smell is a bready, biscuity and even slightly caramel malt flavor atop a slightly juicy, floral hop nose. There may even be a touch of wheat. It's either a DIPA, an American barleywine or, possibly a hoppy wheat wine. - 4.0

Bright, slightly juicy hops blend with a slightly bready malt profile. Quite hoppy, and yet there is some balance. Its nice. - 4.0

The mouthfeel is pretty heavy with a medium-high amount of carbonation. Its gotta be an American barleywine. - 4.0

This is an interesting beer. The almost citric, flowery, juicy element of the hops is the thing that elevates it. Drinkable in spite of an assumed fairly high ABV. The flavors come together nicely. - 4.0

Ok, so I am going to go with American Barleywine, but as far as guesses go, the 12oz bottle is throwing me off. My best guess would be doggie claws...

...reveal: Mikkeller I beat you American IPA, 9.75%, and also, a sneaky 11.2 oz bottle. This instantly rocketed up to one of my favorite Mikkeller beers. Very nice one to open as a blind beer. Thanks!

Dark caramel amber with good clarity and depth. Nice two finger, creamy tan head that fades slowly and leaves creamy rings of lace.

The aroma is an amazingly rich bouquet of tropical fruit. Pineapple, grapefruit, orange marmalde, cocunut and hints of vanill and rich caramels. Strong malt bottom with toffee hints.

The flavor is more aggressive with a bitter bite. Still citrusy, orange peel, grapefruit pith, aspirin hints. A little overboard and stinging. Rich toffee, sweet bottom a bit cloying. Big alcohol burn on the finish. Pallate stripper. Interesting and intense.

The burn in the finish on this bitter beer is a lot to handle. Medium body and quite solid.

Not balanced. Aggressive, hard to finish.

Pours great, nice marmalade-orange body with khaki foam that settles to sudsy big-bubbled patches and stringy lace. Smells of juicy citrus, deep caramelly malts and resinous pine. A hint of cotton candy and earthy mustiness. Taste is of considerable malt, caramel and honey covered biscuits with big juicy grapefruit and mandarin oranges. Deep and round, with prominent hop resinous mouthcoating. Sharp, yet dull, round and raspy at the same time. Full and smooth with well balanced carbonation struggling to get through.

Resin quality stands out and clings to tongue, malt is rich with some flavor of age on it, rounding and deepening. overall not quite as bitter as I'd expected, but still a huge and intense malty IPA, notably well balanced, but without much to make it stand out as unique against so many others.

330ml bottle poured into a 16oz tulip. Here goes my first DIPA.

A - Just under a finger of bubbly orange-tan head. Hazy, burnt-orange hue. Head quickly dissipates to a thin ring. A little disappointed at the head & lacing here, especially after my last brew by Mikkeller (Mikkeller 10) which left gobs of lacing everywhere. The body is much darker and more cloudy than I expected, a definite departure from the standard IPA style; at least the IPA style I know.

S - Massive aroma of juicy, tropical-fruit hops. Some light caramel malt floats around in the background, but this ale is all hop upfront. Lots of citrus, namely pineapple and grapefruit. Very inviting. As it warms, I detect a solid orange presence as well.

T - The first thing that hits me is juicy, fruity hops. Tons of them. The hop character here doesn't wait until the finish to make an appearance, which is what I'm used to. This ale packs a wallop right off the bat that is just delicious. With no freshness date on the bottle, and this bottle being the last one on the shelf, I was slightly worried that this ale might be past it's prime. Although I'm not familiar with the style, I think I can put those worries to rest. Huge citrusy hop character, but the bitterness doesn't totally destroy my palate (something I expected to happen with my first DIPA). Light caramel malt pops up in the finish and aftertaste, and helps balance the overall flavor without getting in the way of the well-crafted hop profile. The alcohol content is masked well, especially for a brew at nearly 10% ABV.

M - Medium body with some weight to it for sure. Carbonation is kept quite low. The bittering hop character lingers for a while in the finish, but doesn't become too much. Slight alcohol warmth is felt, but kept at bay very well. The body feels a little syrupy, and I'm not sure if this is typical of the style of not. I don't particularly care for this, but it doesn't detract away from the brew too much.

D - I came into the review expecting this beer to blow my socks off the brutal bitterness and at the very least some detectable alcohol content. But what I got was a whole nother beast. Both fruity and piney hop presence dominated upfront, giving this ale a flavor profile unlike any other I've ever experienced before. I'm happy that I can say I enjoyed my introduction to the world of DIPAs, something I can't say about IPAs. All in all, I would say this ale was worth the ridiculous one-off price, and if it wasn't so damn pricey I would happily revisit it down the road.

This dipa is like a fertile and enchanted forest. Alas, it is quite expensive for just a single 12 oz bottle so I probably will not be buying this except for special occasions, though I do intend to revisit this one someday.

Poured a nice rocky head into a pint glass. It dwindled quickly, but it kept a film over the beer the whole time with fresh bubbles from the lively carbonation. The color in my lighting was a murky burnt orange. This beer has one of the most complex smells I've ever gotten from a double IPA. It starts with a malty undertone from which bursts of mountainous fauna scents emerge. The blend of the hops they use does wonderful things, I can't really believe it, but there it is.

Tastes go from incredibly bitter on the tip of the tongue, to citrus and malt in the back and man do they play nicely together. The malt and hop assault don't seem to wane even after the beer has been drank, which has happened faster than I have anticipated...that 9.75% hid well.

This beer is fan-****ing-tastic.

Aroma is strongly hoppy, the way an IPA otter be, with hints of citrus and wood. It pours a clear coppery amber with a thick off-white head that hangs around for a bit. Hoppy flavor has a strong caramel undertone and more sweetness than bitterness, as well as an orange note. Texture is firm-bodied and rather fizzy, leaving a nice hoppy, fizzy finish with some caramel underpinning. Mikkeller got the Beat!

330ml bottle. At last Europe's two biggest hop wankers come together, lord almighty, at last!

This beer pours a hazy dark golden brown hue, with two fat fingers of foamy, chunky off-white head, which leaves some sparse, but still attractive, webbed lace around the glass as it ebbs away. It smells of caramel cream, and thunderous (is thunder odorous? Ponder that...) bitter fruity, piney hops. The taste is toffee-tinged caramel malt, subtle at first in the face of overpowering muddled citrus and pine hop astringency (the loving kind), but evolves into something more, well, solid and domineering, against outright expectation. Underlying this little war of attrition is a soft alcohol warming, that has the good graces to never act up. The carbonation is restrained, but not exactly a wallflower either, the body a solid medium weight, and decently smooth in the face of its crazy local detractors. It finishes hoppy as shit (check that box), but not one-sided at any rate - the malt doing its best to play the stolid unsung hero.

It hurts just a little saying this, but this unholy Euro-alliance has fookin' nailed it. A 10 points less change ABV monster that tastes only (in the things that really matter) of beastly hops, and the malt that loves it. Yummy even at the stupid one-off, import price. Oh, and couldn't the original submitter at least have preserved the label wordplay? I just don't grok the concept of IBYU, y'know?
