I took a few chances on bottles I didn't know much about when I was down at State Line the other day. Among them was Danish brewery Mikkeller's nicely designed and somewhat understated "Stateside IPA" which comes from the brewer's self-professed love for American craft beer. I haven't had much Danish craft beer, and I have to say that the designer inside me (yes, he's in there) was excited by the labels of this beer, which is evidence of a design sense most brewers thankfully don't have or seem to care about. Check out the Mikkeller website for instance, and you can see these guys care about how things look. Which isn't a bad thing, but anyway, to the beer.
I'm a big IPA fan and "Hophead" so I usually go for bitter beers in general, and the trend of European traditional and craft brewers alike responding to American styles and innovations obviously tingles my patriotic brew sense, so I gripped this green and yellow striped brew and took it home. Broke it out last night an was immediately very pleased when I poured it out. This thing stinks! The only other Euro beer that I've had which claims to and actually fulfills its promise of intense bitterness is Alvinne's Gaspar. Mikkeller's Stateside is an awesome IPA, and at 7% ABV is very drinkable. These guys kept it pretty restrained with the malt, and went for three kinds of American hops. There is a really intense smell of pineapple or some other kind of tropical fruit which is bursting all over this beer. It tastes bitter as hell too, with a nice body that is nice but not too thin. Finally, an understated label for an over the top beer, instead of the other way around.

Poured to a pokal glass.
A: The body is amber with some opaquenes. The head is white, one and a half finger thick and shows some good retention. Lots of lacing.
S: Not sure if this aroma is the result of not drinking this IPA while it was fresh but the aromas are very very mild of pine, fruity aromas tending for citrus and some hops. This beer is not that much aromatic.
T: The taste shows some toffee, some pine, not that much citrus even though they're present. In the end, hops and barley are strong.
M: Body is medium to medium high. Carbonation is *perfect*. Bitterness should be a lot tougher but it's very mild.
O: This beer should have an aromatic profile that would speak a lot more to the drinker since it's an IPA. The taste is very faited but probably due to not being fresh. Would like to drink this right out of a fresh keg. It could be interesting.

i like that mikkeller is starting to put more of the hoppy beers into cans, this has been needed for awhile, especially the ones made over seas, they just travel so much better in this format. stoked to see this one in a can, they look cool too. its a yeasty northwestern type, bitter and piney, very substantial on the grain front, even a little copper colored from some crystal malt, and sudsy and frothy in the glass. aroma of fresh cut lumber, pine needles, bitter grapefruit and some yeast thats english and bready for what mikkeller is calling american ipa. i get wet woo up front, heavy alpha acid hops, and the yeast, not as stateside as they set it up to be, but so much fresher than any of the bottles of hoppy beer they have had around lately, and better than anything else they have put in a can lately (arh hvad notwithstanding). simcoe maybe, centennial, amarillo on the nose, a fair few strains all loaded in together. its good ipa, not the best of the mikkeller hoppy stuff, but an affordable one for once, and fresher tasting in the can. definitely mikkeller too, i could pick this out of a hundred beers as theirs, maybe the combination of yeast and ibus, but this is very very classic for these guys.

L: Hazy red/amber color, 3 finger foamy light brown head, messy lacing, loads of carbonation.
S: Grapefruit, hops.
T: Malty, grapefruit, hoppy. Bitter on the back end.
F: Drinkable, refreshing.
O: Nice IPA but there are so many others better than this one.

12 oz can. Pours clean amber color with thick puffy head, great retention and sticky lacing. Sweet candy malt aroma. Malt forward taste, some ripe fruit, piney bitterness. Dry finish. Decent IPA, on the sweet malty side.

330 ml bottle ordered from Csakajosor.
Served straight from the fridge in a 0,5 l IPA glass.
Look: Murky amber, deep orange colour, nice head with decent retention, lacing is fine
Smell: notes of resin, pine, orange, interesting malt character in the background
Taste: does follow the smell in my opinion, balanced with a weird malt sweetness, but it is okay
Feel: medium body, sweet aftertaste accompanied by a bitterness boom, i like this balance but it is only my point, active carbonation
Overall: it is worth trying, i am keen on this experimental approach of Mikkeller. I will try the single hop batches in order to be able to improve my hop detection. Nice brew.

Smell is floral/herbs, malt, a slight bit of alcohol, and pine resin. The taste is a pretty close match to the smell with big malt sweetness, citrus, pine, and a fairly bitter finish. The mouthfeel and taste are much more reminiscent of a double IPA. A little too sweet for my palate.

dated 13/01/17 ... whish I knew how fresh it was!
appearance is darkish golden orange with a fat flufy head. great retention and lacing.
upon cracking the can I got a big floral and apple scent. in the glass earthyness, pine, and a sweetish malt. apple note coming out as it warms.
taste is much the same, interestingly earthy, fruity, and malty at the same time - creating a taste that is really unique compared to the IPAs ive previously tried. perhaps its the yeast?
overall a good IPA that is worth trying
