Black pour with a swirling foam. The smell is rich and malty. The taste has got a creamy feel to it. This is a very drinkable stout. Light feel, not too rich, and well balanced. Certainly worth seeking out.

Had this on cask, but I'd like to try the canned product. Hopefully it is just as good.

Poured a deep brown and amber highlighted hue with a one finger foamy off white head. I was disappointed in the texture of the head considering this was a cask offering. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured a soft chocolate malt and some smoky charcoal, but was otherwise weak.

The taste consisted of a lightly sweet chocolate malt, some light and sweet coffee elements and a mild smoky finish.

The mouthfeel was a bit on the lean side and lacked body. There was a decent creaminess though and a semi-dry finish.

Overall an easy to drink stout, but it lacked any real complexity.

Served On Cask At House Of Brews In New York

Appearance: Jet black with very little head. Some bubbles are lingering at the surface. Reminds me of a dark coffee.

Smell: Sweet and spicy. Burnt chocolate, espresso and perhaps some Dr. Pepper smells.

Taste: Toasted malt and dark chocolate. Nice peppery flavor exists and makes me drink on. Not a lot of complexity here.

Mouthfeel: Thin and kind of disappointing for this style. I wanted more body and viscousity. It was smoothe and rather drinkable though.

Drinkability: Would be better if it weren't $6 a glass. Cool experience though.

Moo thunder pours and extremely dark body. This is darkness collapsed upon itself in an abandoned mine shaft at about 3am. The smaller then average light brown head stays the course.

The aroma is all about the roasted malt, with a slight hint of cheap coffee.

The flavor is sweet and roasty, with perhaps, a fleeting hint of cocoa.

The mouthfeel is a bit much with the higher then called for carbonation level.

Overall a decent sweet stout.

WIfey snagged this at the local market.

Pours near black with a nice tall cocoa head that sticks...around...ehhmm. Haha very punny. Good retention and lacing.

Roasted malt aromas with a bit of cocoa in there. Slight yeastiness too.

Taste is a hint bitter, slightly sweet in the middle with a smooth somewhat creamy finish. Nice. Mellow carbonation and a fairly thick mouthfeel.

A really nice session Stout which I'll be visiting again soon!

Can to glass. I've been hoping to find this stuff ever since I moved from Canada to New York State. It's hard to forget the can illustration.

a: dark, thick, oily with an initially thin but lingering beige head.

s: chocolate and roasty coffee. Really nice.

t: more chocolate and coffee, without a lot of sweetness. Very little residual bitterness.

m: creamy and smooth. Goes down a little too fast!

o: a winner. Not as sweet as I expected but very pleasantly drinkable.

This was a 12 oz can poured into a pint glass.

It pours a dark opaque black with a datk brown frothy head with large bubbles. It has some particles in the bottom of the glass. It has a slight bready smell with a little booze in the nose as well. I get a lot of spur which makes me wonder if this batch was a little off. I was expecting more malty taste. It has a decent body and decent carbonation. I want to try a different batch of this beer at another date but if this is how this beer usually tastes I would not recommend over some of the others that are better.

A - black with some reddish hues around the edges; huge brown head that has great retention

S - burnt sugar, dark bread, faint roasted malts

T - roasted malts, burnt sugar, creamy, some faint lactose, some faint underlying citrus, borderline sour or tart finish

M - medium bodied, smooth, a bit crisp

This is a strange beer. It has some notes that indicate a milk stout, but it also has some strange off notes. The tart finish is definitely off putting. The faint citrusy character is also a bit off putting. I think the citrus could work but it seems to accompany the tartness in the finish which I think is what makes it unwelcomed. I'm not sure this is a beer that I will get again, but I'm glad I tried it once.

a - poured a one finger thick bubbly and coffee-colored head into a snifter that left a thin ring throughout. the body was dark brown almost black.

Poured a nice dark brown with a tan head. The head dissipated pretty quickly, leaving only a film over the top of the pint glass. This dragged to a sticky lacing with every pull.

Smelled malty and slightly sweet. Reminiscent of sweetened condensed milk, which isn't a bad thing.

Tasted a bit malty at first, but devolved to an ashy flavor which was not very pleasant. It had good moments, but also bad moments. The slightly ashy aftertaste is not nice. No, there were no smokers near me, and I am not a smoker myself.

I was disappointed in the mouthfeel--I really expected more. There was not enough body for this heavy beer. It's carbonated just right though.

Overall, it's slightly below average for me. I see that people are raving about it, but I need to be honest--it isn't a taste I'd go out of my way to have again. With so many good milk stouts out there these days, I will pass on Moo Thunder.

A: Pours an opaque jet black in color with dark reddish brown highlights when held up to the light and a light amount of visible carbonation near the surface of the beer. The beer has a finger tall dense tan head that slowly reduces to a very thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer with a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of dark roasted malts with milk chocolate and lactose.

T: Starts out with the flavors of the dark roasted malts that give it a little bitterness which fades into the sweetness of the lactose and milk chocolate.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Smooth with some light dryness in the finish.

O: Very easy to drink and the low ABV makes this a sessionable milk stout. Enjoyable.

I want to start by saying I could drink 10 of these.

The mouthfeel stands out as smooth, satiny and surprisingly light, without being watery. The dominant smell is sweet dark chocolate and dark roasted malt. Taste is simple- a bit of milky sweetness, a hint of dark chocolate, tasty roasted character. Nothing overwhelming, but overwhelmingly pleasant throughout. A great session stout. And you can't beat it at 8$ a 6 pack.

A-black with thin tan head. Almost non existent.

S-creamy, lactosey. Hint of chocolate powder. Not bad.

T-comes with a slightly sour taste of aged cocoa. Doesn't taste too awesome. It's kinda disgusting. 

M-watery with a watery finish

O-ouch this is just horrible. It's actually gross. It's sour? Not a good sour! The sort of sour that old milk is. Yuck. Going down the drain.

Into a pint glass:

A: black colored body with a one finger off white head that lasted for a good minute. The body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen. There was barely any lacing.

S: chocolate and roasty coffee up front with just a tad of hops in the background.

T: basically the same.

M: light to medium, slightly watery leads to very drinkability.

O: this was a decent stout that I would have again.

A- dark black pour with a very thin mochoa brown head. No lace.

S- milk chocolate and a roast and bitter hop profile, some dark nuts and some burnt toast.

T- same chocolate and bitterness and a light twang that is slightly metallic.

O- a nice stout in a can, good flavors but it was a little thin.

I bought a variety 12 because these are from NYS and in cans. I thought I had heard some decent things about Moo Thunder as well. The others in the variety have been mostly disappointing, let's see how Moo Thunder does.

A- Fairly well carbed, it pours a thick head, which is tan. Light viscosity during the pour, but the color is deep brown to black. The head is sticking around a while, and leaves some nice lacing as it goes down.

S- Not a strong aroma, but what I do get is roast, chocolate, and faint amount of lactose. Better than average.

T- On first impression: confused. It is very bitter, acerbic even. The lactose is fairly well buried by the roast, maybe bittering hops? which leaves only an aftertaste of anything sweet. This is more like a dry stout than a sweet stout. Once you get used to this, the beer is ok, but fairly one dimensional in terms of burnt roast character. I am guessing they used black malt or black barley in this.

M- Thin and watery, but light in mouthfeel, again, more appropriate for dry stout style.

O - This starts off well, and if it was described as a dry stout I may have rated it higher, it's not entirely unpleasant to drink. But I'm just not sure Butternuts knows what they're doing, so I'm docking them for the incorrect description of this beer style.

Had in Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y., on July 3, 2012. Can into a pint glass. Two fingers of head. Black color. Tan lacing with long lasting, good retention.

Smelled dark chocolate, coffee beans, toffee, caramel and chocolate ice cream.

Tasted pretty close to the nose. Got coffee malts, dark chocolate, smoky fire, all with a good finish.

Full body, Creamy texture. Above average carbonation. Long, smooth finish.

A very nice beer and great way to end my variety pack. Would definitely have it again.

A-Pours nearly black. Slight light penetration. Head is dark tan and dies off very quickly. It starts off big then literally pops away to nothing. The thin crown does leave much more lacing than expected.

S-Milky and sweet but also roasty and milk chocolatey. Yeasty too. Cereal grains and char. Almost a bit smoky. The nose is a bit odd but it is enjoyable and also hard to describe. I am interested to take a sip.

T-Lactic like the nose. Blatantly a Milk Stout. Roast and coffee is not very intense but its certainly there. Burnt grains and cereal. Chocolate of both the milk and dark variety. Still a bit smoky. Way more to describe than I was expecting. Impressed to a certain degree.

M-Light bodied. I only bought one can but I could easily drink a sixer of these. Bubbly and easy to put back. Nice feel.

O/D-Surprisingly good. I have avoided this beer and all beers by Butternuts. After this I feel as though I may need to try some others by Butternuts. This is neat beer in a cool can. Far exceeded my expectations.

Appearance: A rather dark beer with out any other color to it. The head upon pouring looks like a head on a rootbeer float.

Aroma: Some milk sugar in the front. Dark coffee, roasted malts with a pumpernickel aroma. Hops are roasted rather dark as well that have a light floralness. Faint notes of dark fruits.

Taste: Lots of milk sugar with a very smooth mouthfeel like melted milk chocolate. Slight coffee notes, dark roasted malts and hops. Vanilla, dark bread and a light floral finish.

Notes: Very solid and drinkable. Cheers.

12 oz can with no freshness info. This was a souvenir from working American Craft Beer Fest, and was poured into my Bruery tulip.

Moo Thunder Stout pours a solid black, with about two fingers of light caramel foam crowning the beer. There's decent head retention on display, as well as some lightly sticky lacing. The nose is nice, smells of light, sweet coffee, with a slightly heavy roast edge to it. The flavor profile retains that coffee note, but leans a little bit heavier on the roast. The result is that the taste comes across as a little too dry and roasty at times. The body is solidy full, especially for a low ABV beer. It could stand to be a little more creamy though, and is paired with a slightly overactive carbonation. Moo Thunder is a passable Sweet Stout, and definitely makes a better impression than the American Pale Ale I just had before from Butternuts.

A: Almost black dark brown in color, pours a very thin light brown head, minimal internal carbonation

S: Very sweet and malty in terms of fragrance, moderately fragrant, some cocoa and a bit of pepper

T: Seems weak in the flavor department to me, heavy malt and coffee notes, light cocoa, well balanced and just the right amount of sweetness

M: Quite smooth and easy to drink, not lingering or overpowering in the least, light espresso aftertaste and not drying

O: Decent given its style and smooth, but lacks complexity and flavor/fragrance intensity

a: deep dark brown pour settles in black. one inch of thick creamy foam fizzles out in no time. moderate lacing is left.

s: lactos, chocolate malt, and a touch of roasted malt.

t: milk chocolate mainly but there is a slight sourness to the lactos taste. a certain astringency seems to linger in my mouth.

m: thin body, maybe a little too much carbonation. that astringent sourness is always pessent.

12oz can poured into a goblet. Fresh from the brewery.

A: Pours a solid black with a 1 finger khaki head. Head sticks around for a while and laces the sides of the glass a little.

S: Sweet nose of chocolate and coffee. Other roasted malts. Some darker fruit smells as it warms up.

T: Great milk stout. Lots of chocolate and coffee at first, sweetens up some and has a roasty lingering taste. Quite delicious and easy drinking.

M: Full bodied, creamy, milky and silky. Lower on the carbonation and can tell its low in booze.

Overall one of my favorite milk stouts. Keeps it nice and simple which makes it refreshing. Great to either start or end a night.

Pours black, tan head starts at a few fingers before winding down to a decent ring and cap.

Cocoa powder, sugars, some coffee with cream in the scent. Simple but pleasant, good strength.

Taste follows suit, mix of milk+dark chocolates, caramel, and an overall lactose/sugar feel, not overly sweet though. Not much hops to speak of.

Decent mouthfeel, a bit foamy/high on the carbonation, would like to have it a little smoother.

Like many milk stouts, it doesn't wow or break boundaries, but it's solid and satisfies that craving for a lighter stout. The price and can format are pluses, definitely wouldn't mind sessioning it.
