Can into glass.

a: fizzy, opaque yellow. Head flares up and goes away fast, leaving film on the surface but no lace on the glass.

s: lemon/grapefruit and coriander. Doesn't really smell like beer, just fruit.

t: wheaty, sour, very pleasant and refreshing. No bitterness to speak of.

m: fizzy and slippery. Easy drinking. Banana aftertaste.

o: another hefeweizen I like! It's a pretty extreme version of the type, which turns out to be a nice approach.

12 oz. can

Pours a light, nearly clear lemon gold, white lacing for a head.

Smells of lemon citrus, grassy malts, and coriander.

Light lemony tart flavor with some coriander and vague malt.

Light body with tingly carbonation on the back of the tongue.

A highly drinkable and sessionable ale that falls sadly short on taste, there is nothing offensive or bad about this beer but it feels watered down. Could be worse, but could be a lot better too.

Appearance: Pours a hazy straw color with a rather modest head for the style; not much lacing left behind

Smell: Bready, with more lemon than banana

Taste: Like the aroma, the flavor is bready, with a lemony character; some banana esters sneak underneath but don't have much of an impact; the finish is slightly tart

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: More like an APWA than a hefe; decent, but nothing special

I was really disappointed with this one.

Pale straw in color with decent carbonation

The smell was one of overpowering clove, I couldn't get a hint of banana or anything else.

The taste was clove like and bland.

Nothing about this beer made me want to drink it again.

A: Pours a hazy pale golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall bright white head that quickly reduces to a small patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate amounts of wheat and lemon/citrus with much lighter aromas of banana and clove.

T: Similar to the smell, the taste has a light to moderate flavor of wheat and lemon/citrus. There are lighter notes of clove and banana but it is really quite subtle.

M: Light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Very easy to drink and sessionable due to the lighter body, light flavors, and low ABV. Refreshing and thirst quenching - would be a really good summer cook out beer.

Pours a fizzy yellow straw, poofy head, bubbly. Pale scent lead by notes of lemon and faint wheat. Taste a bit more flavorful, but mostly lemon, banana and white bread, not much else going on here but is it really needed? Fizzy and light bodied. Sessionable, but not overly interesting.

Appearance: Very nice light-orange color, cloudy and creamy looking. A small amount of head quickly dissipated to nearly nothing. Looks like unfiltered peach-orange juice with seltzer mixed in.

Smell: Clean fresh smell, with grassy malts, honey, bananas, and maybe hints of some pear.

Taste: Strong carbonation hits first, giving way to plentiful amounts of tangy citrus flavors and banana, and finally a moderate-to-lightly hopped balance.

Mouthfeel: Plenty of carbonation yet smooth drinking, this is a very lively beer with a moderate mouthfeel.

Overall: This was leftover from a summer 6-pack I took to the beach, and I’d have to say this was an excellent choice for the occasion. Lots of flavor with the citrus notes particularly standing out, and well balanced.

Poured from can into a pint glass.

Appearance: Golden color, large amout of white head. Carbonation disappeared quickly.

Smell: Did not belive the other reviews, but it does smell like apple cider.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth and light bodied. Taste like an apple cider mixed with an adjuct lager. Not at all what I expected.

Overall: This beer is ok. If I wasn't hosting a beer tasting I would have not have gone and bought this, and more than likely will not buy it again.

I am not getting the cider flavor and aromas others are getting. I suspect that is older beer poorly stored. A nice somewhat fresh tasting Hefe with nice soft banana notes and slight clove in the finish. Great in warmer weather or with food. It does not knock your socks off but is a nice alternate canned choice.

Picked up a can of this at a random liquor store in Charlton. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Head explodes from this one, needing two glasses. Combined I get a nice, albeit short lived, three finger white head that fades to a rather thin white blanket.

S - Confusing aroma...I don't get any banana thats typical with a hefe...instead I get more of an apple cider like aroma.

T - More of that apple cider flavour, which after looking for reviews I guess is what they're going for. Its not bad, I just wouldn't call this a hefe. Mostly just like an apple cider, which while tasty this just isnt the right style...

M - Mouthfeel is nice and bright and carbonated/crisp. Very enjoyable.

O - Overall this beer was, well, a confusing mess for me. Smelled and tasted like a Strongbow.

Poured into a Long Trail Shaker Pint

A: Abnormally large head. I had to stop pouring halfway through to let the foam settle. Nice frothy white head. Cloudy light amber in color. A healthy amount of yeast at the bottom to swirl around and pour into the glass.

S: Apple cider, yeasty, bready, vinegar, mulling spices

T: Apple cider, lemon peel, verjus, Tingly on the palate. Crisp, dry finish. Aftertaste lingers for a while.

An interesting offering from Butternuts. Taste and aroma is dominated by an apple cider-like characteristic which I would assume the yeast imparts on the beer. Not necessarily a bad thing, but different. An enjoyable beer to drink.

Into a pint glass (and a borrowed weizen, no change, thanx bth86):

A: murky light banana yellow body that gives a large two finger foamy white head that lasts for a good minute. Some very light bubbles move slowly up the sides of the glass. Light foamy lacing speckles the sides of the glass.

S: strong "esters" up front

T: same as the same, nothing else

M: medium, carbonation felt, banana aftertaste, sweet finish, sessionable

O: I'm starting to wonder if I should continue to try hefeweizens because I think I must bring down ratings as I still can't get into this style. I really don't think I would have this again.

A- a golden color with some fluffy head but not as much as I would of hoped and not as cloudy as I prefer for a hefe.

S- smell is mostly unripe banana and wheat, some lemon as well.

T- some clove and banana but mostly a lightly pleasant tart wheat and some citrus as well.

O- really refreshing, a go to beach beer, I'm digging the tart wheat beers thus summer.

Had in Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y., on July 1, 2012. Can into pint glass. Three fingers of head. Hazy straw color. Bubbly white lacing with no retention.

Smelled caramel, light chocolate, grapes and plums.

Tasted similar notes to the smell. Got grapes, plums, lemon wheat and sour yeast. Reminded me of a Saison or Farmhouse.

Light body. Slick texture. Above average carbonation. Smooth consistent finish.

Really enjoyed this beer. It was the first I tried of a 12-pack mix of four different beers from Butternuts Beer & Ale. Would love to try it again.

Hefeweizens can be a dime a dozen, but this one comes in at below 5% alcohol, and it's in a 12oz can. And it's craft. And a sixer costs $9. Those things mean more to me than others perhaps, but it means that I'm already predisposed to liking this offering from Butternuts.

The smell is unremarkable - citrus and pear, wheat and light malts. The appearance is like a cocktail or a white wine, without much head even when poured hard from the can. The taste does nail the style though. It has fruit up front, water in the middle, sugar in the back, and it finishes clean. It's as easy drinking as easy gets. I hesitate to compare it to Blue Moon, but that's really where this one is. Maybe a couple steps up the ladder. It does the style, does it in a can, and does it affordably. And locally.

For that, props.

Keeping up with the Hefeweizen project, I picked up an oddball today. Butternuts Heinnieweisse in a green 12oz can. Got my Penn Weizen glass ready to go.

It was easy to swirl a can to properly pour this hefe. The yeast poured in alright, accompanied by some rust-colored floaties, a few of which even settled on the head of the beer. Mucky, dirty lemonade color--a little darker even. The head was once 3/4" high, but has settled too. Lots of suspended sediment. 3.5

Definitely some solventy off-aromas. There are some cloves and suggested banana that borders on Runts candy artificial. Wheat malts are extra tangy in the nose and a little creamy. A little tinny, as well. 2.5

Tastes just like it smells. Clove spice notes are over-the-top, artificial banana is not very tasty, and that strange solvent flavor is very active in the taste. I'm also going to have to say that the wheat malts aren't particularly clean either. This is just a mess. 2.0

Feels just fine. Smooth-bodied with appropriate carbonation for the style. 4.0

A butchered hefe. Attenuated, messed-up, and a labor to finish. Stay away. 2.0

cloudy, yellow/gold body, nice white head that fizzes out.

pleasant, mild citrus, but typical aroma of a wheat beer.

the taste is interesting. there is an initial sour note that lingers, and is accompanied by a nice wheat and ester flavor in the after taste. it remains tart on the back edges of the tongue but the wheat flavors stay on the palate...odd, but by far the best offering from their mix 12er. However, I will not buy again.

*edit 4/17: A week later and I have had no desire to drink the two remaining cans. The sour/tart flavor is quite unpleasant by the end of a glass/can, as it really sticks(like sticky) on the palate. but still the best of the mix pack...

now, i feel compelled to mention the website. after reading their description of this beer i was ready to hate it. this is why:

"Traditional Hefeweisen from Germany usually taste like cardboard because by the time you drink them, they're not fresh any more. Chuck brews Heinnieweisse with Bavarian yeast and 67% wheat grist approximately 5000 mile closer to your mouth than Germany giving it a rich, fully fresh palate...At 4.9%abv you'll taste the effervescent, sweet yet tart freshness that no farty old German can boast..."

first of all, beer does not have a palate, human beings do...im rant verging, so i must stop typing....Germans!?!?You call yourself a brewer and your bad mouthing Germans?!?!?!?!

Packaged January 25, 2012

A: Pours a cloudy yellow color with about a fingers worth of white head

S: Fruity, sour yeastiness with some bready malts and faint leafy hops

T: Follows the nose but a bit lighter, much less sour in the taste than the nose but the fruitiness is still there with the light malts and leafy hop presence. Finishes crisp and clean

M: Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Very smooth and velvety texture

O: I'm pleasantly surprised by this beer, it's far and away the best of the regular line up from Butternuts. Just like the other 3 regulars, this is extremely easy to session and drink more than a few in a session. This would be a perfect beer for summer months

Poured from the can into a wheat ale glass.

An extremely pale and straw yellow, with some cola large bubbles in the body sticking to the glass, slightly cloudy. Soapy head sticks around for only a little while, bone white.

Nose is obvious diacetyl, movie theatre popcorn butter totally, faint lemon and crisp behind it. Clean smelling.

Something really weird on this for the palate. A real gaseous and carbon dioxide blast hits, then giving to a buttery palate. Finish feels like an almost sour grain and wheat. Soda pop and watery mouthfeel.

Overall not really enjoying this, going to pass on this one.

Pours a bright, cloudy tan/yellow with a thin head into my glass. Not too far from the style.

Lots of banana and clove upfront with perhaps a hint of bubble gum (?). I'm thinking banana bread as well.

Taste is similar. Clean, slightly crisp with a donked-out cadre of wheat, banana and clove. Very friendly.

The crispness remains in the finish. Very sublime flow to it.

I like this. It might appeal to first-timers when it comes to this style. Very friendly beer.

The aroma is of orange, lemon zest, toast, cloves, and coriander. Yeasty esters of fruit and must.

Lots of flavor. Clove and cinnamon notes on orange and lemon zest, melon and light fruit notes. Coriander and funky notes. Quite tart and zesty.

Thin, fizzy, crisp and refreshing

Overall a little off tasting and hard to drink. Too many rich, spicy, yeasty things going on.

Poured from a can and served in a weisse vase, the beer is a light, hazy, pale yellow coloring that is almost opaque, with a slight tinge of gold in the absolute depths. Only a thin ring of film around the glass, and a sparse, filmy cover across the top. Aromas are toasty, with a cereal and lemony blend, very slight clove spicing, and a buttery undertone. Flavors are watery and sharp, on a thin, extremely light body. The carbonation combines with the thinness of the brew to make it a tough drink. Flavors are slightly buttery, with a minimal clove spicing and some very subtle toasted characteristics. Flavors are very mild. The aftertaste is minimal, with some of the buttery sweetness, as well as a bit of the citrus sweet and tart. The finish is quick, and really nondescript. The beer really is off your palate before you can truly register what it is you're tasting.

I had this beer poured from a can into a chilled pint glass.

The beer pours decently with a nice hazy golden straw color, a nice white head, and some lacing on the glass. The beer smells decently with a nice yeasty, whet scent up front followed by a lemon zest smell on the back end. The tastes is average as the has a mild lemon zest taste up front with a wheat finish. The mouthfeel is average as the beer is decently carbonated, light bodied, and leaves you mild bitter. Overall, it was an okay farmhouse ale, nothing special though.

A: Pale straw with barely decent haze. Okay-size white head that fades pretty quickly, but leaves some splotches of lace.

S: Estery fruit and yeast in the nose. More lemon with lychee than banana. Lightly earthy and spicy yeast. Hint of cloves. Wheat base in background with hint of sweetness.

T: Nice base wheat beer – doughy & grainy with a hint of sweetness. Lemon from nose fades quite a bit and only pushes in at the end. In its place, and at the fore, are some fruity esters that are interestingly and differently cucumber and melon. Perhaps even a pinch of salt – sort of salted watermelon rind. Also some lychee and a hint of bubblegum. Not really getting any banana. Cloves are there in a soft and mild way. Mildly spicy and softly earthy yeast character. Noticeable though muddled hops.

M: Not really any pucker, but it is a touch tangy. Slightly under medium body with CO2 a bit over – but in creamy way. Light tartness and touch of hops take this one drying after just a bit of sweetness.

D: Not really a traditional Bavarian Hefeweisen – despite their own advertising. It is, however, and interesting and decent wheat beer.
