Bomber purchased in the fall from Liquor Express in Huntsville AL and shelved at home. Poured into a snifter on 3/30/13 at around 40 degrees at around noon.

-Pour: Good bit of head and carbonation in the glass. Head dissipated after about a minute or two. Very nice pumpkin hue to the color.

-Nose: Smells like pumpkin pie to me, nothing overly dramatic. I like pumpkin pie though so no worries!

-Taste: Pretty much the same. Cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkins, wheat, some malts, spices. None of them were overbearing, but I felt that this was a much better balance of taste than most other pumpkin beer types that I've tried.

-A medium feel to it with medium carbonation, went down pretty smoothly.

Poured a brownish auburn with decent head on top of a bready, subdued pumpkin and cinnamon aroma, not really noticing much else although a touch of other sugary goodness (probably caramel). It is a light to medium bodied beer that is smooth and easy to drink and finishes crisp and easy thanks to the spice and decent hops and carbonation. As for the taste, a good chunk of pumpkin is noticeable but it is not overpowering and thankfully the spices in here, like a touch of nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, balance the beer, as do some sweet and bready. So while not overly sweet or pumpkiny, it is also not watery and too spicy and almost no pumpkin is noticeable as I have found in some other (cheap) pumpkin ales. Not the greatest or tastiest pumpkin ale but I got my "pumpkin fix" and it was sweet enough to enjoy as a dessert beer and that's all I ask.

Yet another pumpkin ale...this one using homegrown pumpkins though.

Pours a nice cloudy copper brown with a thin off-white head, not much lacing.

Smells the same as every other good pumpkin ale I've had: like pumpkin pie with a lot of spices!

Tastes of nutmeg, pumpkins, cinnamon and pie. Lots of sweet malts and a nice hoppy backbone. Very well balanced, one of the nicest pumpkin ales I've had.

The mouthfeel is amazing, nice and creamy and just the perfect amount of C02

A- Very dark amber colored body, almost looks cola colored when not held up to the light. Sticky ring of thin tan bubbles that coat the side of the glass on top.

S- Pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, caramel malt. Nothing out of the ordinary for a pumpkin ale.

T- Almost tastes like a malty amber or a brown ale complimented by the pumpkin and spices. None of the pumpkin pie flavors overwhelm the beer, which is a nice change of pace. Much more subtle than I was expecting, but a pleasant surprise nonetheless.

M- Medium bodied, medium carbonation, easy drinking.

O- I was expecting a ton of pumpkin and spices in my face, but what I got was a well executed amber ale with complimenting pumpkin flavors.

750ml bottle poured into a nonic pint glass. No freshness date.

A: Dark garnet red with burnt orange edges. Nearly opaque. Three finger off-white head. Sediment present in final pour.

S: Roasted pumpkin, cinnamon and clove.

T: Roasted pumpkin up front, cinnamon and various spices in the middle, peppery alcohol and earthy hops in the finish.

M: On the thicker side of medium. Carbonation was lively.

O: One of the better pumpkin ales I've had, especially considering I sat on it for nearly 3 months. Rogue can be a little pricey, but they always seem to make solid beers.

A - Pours a murky burnt amber with a one-finger head that hangs around for quite a while.
Shows a nice amount of visual carbonation, almost akin to certain sour ales.

S - Reeks of pumpkin spice, which is a good thing, in this case. Nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon, with a hint of underlying earthy funk. It begs to be paired with pumpkin ale ice cream, which I made with this beer last year when it first came out. Hit me up for the recipe if you're feeling froggy... it's damn tasty. I've also made the ice cream with Tilburgs' Dutch Brown ale when pumpkin ale is out of season.

T - Dry, and a little creamy. The nose nods to the taste, with caramel malt backing up all the spices and pumpkin-seed notes. Unlike some of the other "Pumpkin" ales out there, this one delivers what it promises. (We're looking at you in disappointment, Sixpoint...) Not too heavy on any of the ingredients, this is a great beer for sipping, (Or if you can afford it, at $10 a bottle) chugging. Makes a great chaser for Bullit Rye Bourbon too.

M - Dry, almost to the point of being tannic, but that's likely a result of all the spices apparent in this beer. Not much heft to it, for being as dark in appearance as it is. Proof that the lovibond scale isn't always an indicator for mouthfeel. Carbonation is an afterthought here, but that's okay, because this is a tasty little monster!

O - One of my favorite pumpkin beers from last year, as it delivers what the label promises.
Also one of the best installments so far in the "Chatoe Rogue" series. Another nifty thing about this beer is this : Rogue grew all the ingredients for this beer, and ended up with around 1,100 pumpkins, when the recipe only called for about 350. The rest were donated to charitable organizations, and town carnivals for children to paint, and carve, in most cases free of charge. I think that's pretty rad. If you're in San Antonio right now, the HEB off of 280 has a few cases left, and has the bottles marked for only FIVE BUCKS EACH.
Cheers, People... Have a good-good!!!

750 ml bottle into signature shaker pint glass, 2012 bottling. Pours lightly hazy reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Slight spotty soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of caramel, pumpkin, pear, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, toast, brown sugar, clove, brown bread, and herbal hops. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of malt and spices. Taste of caramel, pumpkin, toast, ginger, pear, nutmeg, cinnamon, brown sugar, clove, brown bread, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, pumpkin, pear, toast, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, clove, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of flavors; with a nice malt/spiciness balance; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy, slick, and foamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish, as expected of 5.6%. Overall this is a highly excellent pumpkin ale! Great balance and complexity of malt/spice flavors; and extremely smooth to drink. A highly enjoyable pumpkin beer offering.

750 mL painted bottle served in pint glass. Beer pours a nice red color with a huge foamy tan head. Big pumpkin pie aroma. Creamy and luscious from the first sip, offset with a biting carbonation. I think it could stand to warm up.

This beer happily blends real pumpkin flavor with a heavy dose of pie spices. I especially get ginger and nutmeg, though apparently there's even vanilla in here. Sweet flavors, but not sugary. Aftertaste is a little dull with some mysterious residue. Overall I'm finding this very enjoyable. Not the best beer to bring out the flavor of fresh pumpkin pie spices, but a great example of a pumpkin beer that showcases spice without neglecting gourd.

This ale hit the shelves later than most which I like. Something strange about pumpkin ales in July in Florida...per Rogue the later release was due to growing their own GYO pumpkins and declining to use canned pumpkin. This is an attractive beer with hazy reddish orange body with creamy yellow head. The aroma of pumpkin pie spices is more subtle than other examples of this style, also a plus. The taste: this is , I am happy to report, my favorite of the years pumpkin ales! I've tried a BUNCH of them this year. Well balanced but not boring and no chemical off tastes. I know there is a fair Amount of variability in this style from year to year, ie Weyerbacher was great last year but disappointing this year, but hopefully Rogue will hit the mark again in subsequent years!

750 mL bottle from the LCBO; bottled on Oct 4 2012 and listed at 6.0%. I was getting a little sick of trying pumpkin ales a few months back when they flooded onto the shelves, but after a few months' abstention from such brews, I'm ready for more gourdy goodness. Poured into a snifter.

Pours a deep orange-bronze colour, muddy with sediment, and topped at first with two fingers of frothy, off-white head. Retention isn't great; it seeps away over the next few minutes, leaving behind a soapy film and narrow collar at the surface, as well as some scant lacing. The aroma is spicy and appealing, with lots of gingerbread and fresh pumpkin pie, as well as accents of allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg. It's a slightly sweet bouquet with a nice, underlying mashed pumpkin feel, but the spice is definitely in the forefront here. This kind of makes me nervous, because I tend to prefer balanced pumpkin beers, not spice bombs.

That worrying turned out to be for naught though, as the taste is deftly balanced between sweet maltiness, dry spiciness, and pumpkin flavour. The nutmeg and cinnamon grab my attention at first, followed quickly by some buttered pie crust, brown sugar, pecan and mashed pumpkin that gradually overtakes the spice. The clove shows up more toward the finish, alongside hints of allspice, orange zest and leafy hops. Spicy, lingering aftertaste that clings to the palate. Medium-bodied, about right for a 6.0% brew; although the carbonation is biting and nearly distracting. Ridiculously drinkable, perhaps moreso than any other pumpkin ale I've tried previously. Not boozy at all; I can't detect any ethanol.

Final Grade: 4.3, an excellent A grade. Rogue's Pumpkin Patch Ale is a fine specimen of this occasionally-obnoxious style - everything is balanced perfectly, with lots of spicy goodness for those who enjoy that aspect of the style, but never going overboard. This is not a spice/booze bomb that will exhaust your palate. The malty sweetness, gourdy flavours and (relatively) dense body do their part keeping the spice in check, generating an unbelievably quaffable spiced ale. As much as I love Pumking, I like this stuff nearly as much, although for different reasons. Pumpkin Patch is obviously much lighter and nuanced, and for that reason I would suggest it as a perfect introductory pumpkin ale for newbies interested in trying the style. I would also highly recommend it to seasoned pumpkin-loving BAs who are looking for a great fall/winter spiced sipper. Cheers!

A: Pours a cloudy red body with two fingers of off white head. Retention is minimal and leaves some lacing.

S: Strong front of pumpkin and spice. Mix of spices I can't pick out follow. Very pleasing aroma.

T: Tons of pumpkin and spice. First beer of this type that isn't strong on the spice than the pumpkin. Delicious.

M: Medium bodied with low low carbonation. Leaves a sweet aftertaste. Alcohol doesn't come through either.

O: Pleasing pumpkin ale, the taste, body and aroma are all spot on. Though, for the price, it can't beat out some of the local brews for much cheaper. A solid make from Rogue none the less.

750ml bottle into block15 snifter. Purchased for $8.49.

A: Pours a lightly hazy ruby amber with three fingers of soft looking off-white head. Head slowly faded into a thick and lasting fuzzy film that left thick streaks of lace down the glass.
S: Dominating notes of pumpkin spice on the nose. Fresh pumpkin, cinnamon, clove, lemon zest, allspice, cardamom and pepper mix well to create one of the more natural and inviting pumpkin beers I’ve come across.
T: More pumpkin like the nose but perhaps not as rich. In addition to everything mentioned I get flavors of brown sugar and orange citrus rind. The sweetness falls off in the finish and the aftertaste is full of lingering spices.
M: This is where the beer falls short. The body is on the thin side of medium and the mouthfeel is slightly watery. The real problem is there are far too many bubbles. If this beer was slightly thicker and far less carbonated it was be awesome.
O: Great flavor for the style, not overly spices nor synthetic and syrupy tasting like many are. Let this beer warm up and burn off a few of the bubbles and you’ve got a great evening sipper.

P: Murky dark brown body with hints of orange. Big dense creamy tan froth that settles to a bubbly layer of creaminess.

S: Aroma is killer! Fresh pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Roasted (real) pumpkin, nutmeg, brown sugar, allspice, clove, barley and notes of cream.

T/M: Spice forward with a backsplash of delicious roasted pumpkin and toasted salted pumpkin seeds. Gingerbread cookies grace the palette once warmed. Medium-full body with gentle prickly carbonation. Finish is creamy and smooth with a dose of spiced hops and pumpkin seeds.

O: Fantastic pumpkin ale! This is full flavored not diluted and has real pumpkin flavor. This is the best pumpkin ale I have has the pleasure of drinking. Hats off to Rogue for this masterpiece. Cheer!

I poured a bottle into a mug.

Appearance- Clear coppery- brown with two fingers worth of a lingering, light tan foamy head. There is a lot of sticky lacing.

Smell- Clove , nutmeg, allspice, and caramel malts.

Taste- Pumpkin pie flavor with a strong spice presence, especially the nutmeg and clove.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with a generous amount of carbonation. Very, very smooth and creamy.

Overall- Very enjoyable, this is one of the better pumpkin beers that I have tried. Maybe Rogue needs to turn down the spice a tad but it is still a good beer.

22oz served in an Allagash cervoise

A - Pours a dark reddish copper color with an egg cream head. Darker than most pumpkin beers.

S - Dried spiced, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, sweet pumpkin, brown sugar, nutty yeast

T - Sweet and creamy pumpkin pie flavor, good bill of spice, allspice and cardamom being the most prominent, the cinnamon is faint. Pecans, cream, there's a clean character in there as well. The spice runs long into the finish

M - Moderate carbonation, thick feel, medium full body,

Very good for the style. It's full flavored with plenty of pumpkin and rides the edge of too spicy while maintaining a steady sweetness. Like this one alot.

Very dark for the style as it pours a dark brown with some coppery red mixed in. Not hazy, but still dark enough to be opaque. The head is a finger and a half thick of very contrasting white bubbles. The two contrasting colors work well.

Not so much pumpkin as it is pumpkiny spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, caramel malt. Killer smell.

Like the smell, it's all about the pumpkin spices and not so much about the pumpkin. The scents are good, but they come across the taste buds as aggressive. It's certainly not a bad taste, just very strong in the spice area, particularly in the swallow. Again, all the tastes are good, just extremely in your face.

It's a bit spicy, even though the spices are pleasant. Very aggressive on the palate, almost too much. There's a hint of sweet from the malt, but the spices take over immediately and don't slow til well into the finish. No real hop presence because of the spicy feel.

Overall it's a good beer, just a bit in your face. Looks and smells greats, then takes a step back. A bit of mellowing would likely help.

A- The beer pours medium brown in color, with red hues when held to the light. The head is tan with moderate retention. Lacing is minimal.

S- Lots of spice up front. Getting a lot of nutmeg, clove and all spice. The nose is all in all very aromatic yet one dimensional.

T- Again the spices hit strong upfront. The pallet is bombarded with nutmeg and clove. The hops profile keeps it some what balanced with a slight piney bitterness.

M- Medium body in mouth feel with medium carbonation.

O- This is a slightly above average pumpkin ale, kind of a spice bomb. Its flavorful and festive but not very well balanced. Could use a little work.

Most pumpkin ales have a bright, cheery pumpkin orange colour, but Chatoe Rogue Pumpkin Patch looks like roasted pumpkin (which it is brewed with). Dark as though it were left in the oven a few minutes too long, the beer is nonetheless super sleek, with sparkling clarity and glossy mahogany highlights. Even its head appears off-coloured and has a dusty tinge.

Pumpkin Patch smells of mulled cider and toffee-apple - is there a better, more comforting fall-time treat? If I could turn liquid to wax with a touch of my finger I would use this bottle as an incense candle. My house would smell amazing. As usual it is he who shouts the loudest that wins and, in this case, that's cinnamon (though clove and nutmeg help make the perfumed experience truly 'surround-sound').

Trying to single out each individual spice in a pumpkin ale is like trying to tune-in to a single instrument in a philharmonic. Not only is it difficult but it also misses the point: like a well balanced orchestra, how the different components compliment and accentuate one another is ultimately what matters most. Pumpkin Patch has a tight group of spices that taken altogether is delightfully fine, fresh and beautifully scented.

The 2012 vintage lists cinnamon, orange peel, clove, and nutmeg as accessories to the roasted pumpkin. Not listed on the ingredients list but tasted are handfuls of pecans, toffee brittle, toast, apple cider and the slightest brush of lemon juice. As for pumpkin itself, squash is definitely CEO but doesn't micromanage and allows the clove and citrus to punctuate the finish.

Most impressively, the beer has an almost custard-thick texture. No flour or pumpkin puree in the house? This is all the filling you need for a pie! The only problem are those pesky bubbles, which come on a little strong and push the sweet-spicy flavours through at an unfortunately hurried pace (especially since the recipe steers clear of the excessive spiciness that plagues some of its pumpkin ale peers).

Chatoe Rogue First Growth Pumpkin Patch features a sweet-savory-spicy combo that evokes the most solacing of fall-time comforts. It's the beer equivalent of coming home to Mom's cooking. "Greens" feel free to use this ale as proof of the benefits of using locally farmed ingredients. While this would undoubtedly pair with a number of autumn delicacies, a bottle this size makes for a satisfying treat in its own right.

Chilled bomber into two shaker pints, no visible bottling date. 2012 (orange bottle) release.

Look- darker than expected, hazy brown with orange highlights. Opaque. Two fingers of toasted coconut head, decent retention, sparse lacing.

Smell- Aromatic, brown sugar, pumpkin/squash, cinnamon, mace, fairly sweet. Something vaguely fruity, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Candied grapefruit? Nice.

Taste- Similar to the aroma, straightforward but nice. Brown sugar, roasted pumpkin, vanilla, autumn spice. A touch of darker roast towards the middle, toasted biscuit. finishes with cinnamon and mace, aftertaste is light, whipped pumpkin pie filling.

Mouthfeel- Medium body, smooth carbonation. Full but not too heavy or syrupy, creamy feel.

Overall- Just what I was expecting, a well executed pumpkin ale with layered caramel, spice, and roasted pumpkin. Well done, certainly better than the average pumpkin beer. The price tag's a bit hefty at $10/bomber, but I'd certainly try it on tap.

Pours hazy chestnut colour with a moderate head that makes its way down to just a thin ring. Minimal spotty lace.

Aroma is just a whiff of spice, earthiness, alcohol. A touch of sweet malt, too

Lots of caramel malt to taste. Undertstated spice (thank goodness). Earthiness from pumpkin. Dark fruit. And alcohol. Mouthfeel is quite soft, a little bit of creaminess keeps iit from being thin bodied.

An evenhanded approach to a pumpkin brew, quite drinkable. Not overly spiced. A little too boozy for a 6% brew, though. Alcohol just a little too present.

Pours a medium brown with an inch of airy tan head that quickly recedes and leaves little to no surface layer or lacing.

Aromas of pumpkin, spice and carmel malts.

Taste follows through from the aromas. Spice, carmel, vanilla and pumpkin and a nutty background.

Body is light to medium with moderate carbonation. It does have a nutty aftertaste that lingers, that I personally didn't care for.

Overall a good representation of the style. Nothing really sticks out, but nothing is overdone either, which can be a problem with some pumpkin beers.
