Thanks to black13 for grabbing a case of this and ear-marking a bottle for me and TulipSnifter. Poured into a pair of New Belgium globes. She expressed some very strong thoughts about the beer and I encouraged her to do a review as well. It's one of the hardest to review beers I've ever had because of it's uniqueness. Rating to style goes right out the window and the 1-5 scale is simply worst to best.

A: Deep amber to brown with loads of brown speckled sediment. I'm seriously wondering if it's not some rehydrated bits of crispy bacon. A finger or so of dusty head recedes to a wisp ring and leaves no lacing. Not very appetizing appearance. 1.5/5

S: I've actually never had anything from Voodoo, let alone the Maple Bacon Bar. I have however walked past Voodoo on Third St several times to go get coffee from Stumptown. This is a very good representation of what the exterior of the doughnut shop smells like. Sweet maple greasiness dominates the aroma. It works very well in the beer format. The best part of the beer and promises a lot. 4/5

T: A definite salinity to the taste buds. I guess that's suppose to be the bacon. The sweetness is in the artificial sense. Medicinal and metallic flavors "compliment" the buttery maple. This is very similar to a rauchbier. The smoke comes off as that liquid smoke added to bar-b-que. Very artificial and unpleasant. Drain pour worthy. 1/5

M: Thin, quickly loses carbonation and presents pretty flat within 15 minutes, gummy finish. I'd prefer thicker with some chewiness to better represent the doughnut. Weak. 2/5

O: Smells pretty good but is offensive to drink. It's interesting in the sense that I've never had anything like it, but I've never had anything that tasted like cod liver oil either... And I really don't like that shit. 1.5/5

Definitely a different beer - I struggled through the first glass, but am now starting to enjoy it at the end of the bottle... ?! Heavily smoke-forward, there are definite maple and bacon notes - but overall a bit of a mess.

Pours a hazy light brown with yellowish tinges. Minimal head that disappears quickly. Aroma of smoked meat, with an industrially sweet maple backbone. The flavour starts sweet with a malt basis, albeit no "donut" that I can discern. This transitions rapidly into a smoky, smoky finish – almost overpowering.

A very different beer and glad to have tried it, although buying one bottle would have been enough!

A pretty rough beer. I, for the record, have had the bacon maple bar from Voodoo, and it is delicious. When you try to put it in beer form, it is terrible. The smell is off putting right from the start: a heavy smokiness with a hint of sweet. I read a review on here that says it tastes like dirty grill water, and that's about right. The overwhelming smoke flavor sticks, in a bad way. It stays in your mouth too. Thank god I had other beer in the fridge. I poured out a twelve dollar bottle of this stuff. The only decent thing is the appearance, with a nice thick head and good lacing. After that abandon ship.
