Appearance is a deep dark brown with a thin layer of head that still left some nice lacing behind. Chocolate and a little roast were present in the nose. Chocolate was very upfront in the flavor and the roasted bitterness took over on the finish. However, there was a lingering chocolatey sweetness throughout. Excellent effort and a true chocolate beer experience!

On-tap. ½ pt Glass. Enjoyed on mar´13. Pours pitch black headed by a brownish foam. Crown is creamy & lasting. Roasted malt, fudge chocolate & dried nut aromas. Creamy & malting sensation touched by dry bitterness. Full body. Soft to moderate carbonation. Sharp bitter cocoa in the middle gets along with dried nut astringency & linger into a long bitter finish. Chocolate hues on the aftertaste. ABV is shown by gentle warming sensation in the back. Very well balanced sweet vs bitter flavors.

Appearance: Beautiful appearance. The head was very small yet stayed nicely on top the entire time. The bubbles were small and there was a little cloud to it.

Aroma: Smell reminded me exactly of the smell of milk chocolate with aromas of vanilla. It had a little bit of a burnt smell as well as a little spiciness. Overall, the smell was subtle.

Flavor: Tasted just like it smelled - like milk chocolate! Roasty, lots of vanilla and cream, some nutiness as well as nutmeg. Like the smell, the flavor was also not very strong.

Mouthfeel: The one part of the beer that really brought it down for me. The beer tasted a little flat and I wished it could be a lot thicker.

Overall: Nice beer but I feel it could use some aging. It was slightly off balance it'd be nice for it to smoothen out.

Served on draft into a tulip.

A - Poured an almost completely opaque black with about a half inch of foamy, sticky head. Very pleasant looking.

S - Perhaps a little obvious...but chocolately. Roasted cocoa with a hint of malt.

T - Follows the nose although not overpowering with chocolate. Alcohol is present but hidden well considering it is 8%

M - Thick. Almost to the point of milkiness but still very nice considering the flavor.

O - Not my favorite chocolate stout but a nice offering from Rogue. Your results may vary if you have this out of the bottle.

@ Growlers Pour House

Pours pitch black with some bubbly cream floating on the surface. Smells like pure chocolate...that's pretty much it. Dark, syrupy, straight-up chocolate sweetness. As expected, the flavor is more of the same: a big mouth full of semisweet chocolate morsels. Heavy, almost syrupy body. Wow. One was enough for me (I honestly don't think I was in the mood for such a pure dessert-like beer). Chocolate to the max. I prefer the regular Chocolate Stout just because at least there is some indication of a stout underneath. Tasty in a novelty sort of way.

Looks chocolatey, like espresso. Regal crown of light mocha-colored foam. Nice-sized pour raises eyebrows and a smile.

Dusty cocoa, like powdered milk chocolate. A light Belgian flair to the chocolate, as well (not to the beer, mind you). Sweet roasty malts with a light peat-like charm. Hops are playing hookie. Very beautiful aroma that is hindered only by it's one-note simplicity.

Milky chocolate and brown steakhouse bread. Tingly booze gets right up through the nasal passages. Sandy charcoal character pronounces some earthy hop tones that were in absentia in the nose. Same flat Pacman Yeast, but it doesn't hurt. Light nuances of hazelnut, spruce hops, and unexplained oak. Overall, pretty damn tasty.

Thick and chewy without being viscous or really sticky. Booziness isn't a horror, either. Carbonation for this kind of beer is damn close to perfect.

Exceptional as a chocolate stout. No artificial tastes or off-flavors. Smooth as velvet and highly enjoyable at this strength. Great alcohol profile where it's never heady. One of Rogue's prizes.

a: This was black and it was served to me with a thin, dark brown head.

s: Fudge-y chocolate, and little roast, and some booze.

t: Great balance of sweet chocolate cake batter and plenty of roasty bitterness. Not a lot of layers perhaps, but very satisfying.

m: Plenty chewy and gently carbonated.

o: I was dissapointed to see a Rogue tap take over at the Bull's Head. I'm just not much of a fan. This cheered me up quite a bit.

Had this on tap at ROGUE Ales Publick House in San Francisco. I was told it was 9.5% by the beer tender, but I see it is listed here at 8%. I thought it was lacking in alcohol for a 9.5 ABV so I tend to agree with the 8% here.

The Rogue Double Chocolate Stout pours a pitch black in the glass with a thick chocolate mousse like head, pretty good retention, but no real lacing to talk about. On the nose are pronounced aromas of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, chocolate truffle, chocolate cake...needless to say, there is a lot of chocolate. Besides chocolate, I get raisin, roasted hazelnuts, espresso, & cognac.

Everything that I got on the nose, I get on the palate with a full & rich texture, full body, & long finish. Overall, this is a solid beer worth trying at least once. Recommended if you're looking to try something new, but if you're strapped for cash....go with the regular chocolate stout instead.

Served on tap in a 10 oz snifter

Appearance –Served a black brew with a small tan head. The head fades fast to a thin film leaving a great level of lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is rich and strong. It is heavy of a sweet mild chocolate smell. Mixed with these aromas are lighter notes of a vanilla and light caramel smell. Overall, big and delicious.

Taste – The flavor starts out of a smooth semi-sweet chocolate flavor mixed with a roasted malt taste. Vanilla soon comes to the tongue and along with it some sweeter and more sugary flavors of caramel and molasses. While it comes to the tongue, the sweetness soon dwindles some as more roasted malt and a bitter chocolate flavor then come to the tongue. While not detected in the slightest in the nose, at the very end a light alcohol flavor comes to the tongue and leaves a very nice bitter chocolate booze flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the medium to more creamy side with a carbonation level that was rather average. It was an alright mouthfeel, although more creaminess and a bit less carbonation would have likely better suited the chocolate, roast and alcohol flavors of the brew.

Overall – It is a rather tasty brew and the name is very appropriate. It begins with sweeter chocolate and then turns more to a bitter chocolate, with big dose of chocolate in the nose. It is tasty and well worth a try.

Double Chocolate Stout by Rogue is currently my favorite beer. The flavor is dark chocolate without being too sweet. The creaminess and bold flavor combined with high alcohol content make this the perfect beer any time of day or night. This beer made me fall in love with the versatility of the stout. Thanks Rogue!

Had this on tap at Red’s Alehouse in North Liberty, IA. A really great chocolate beer that actually puts emphasis on some chocolate flavor. Chocolatey aroma really stands out. Appearance is a chocolate color and dark tan head. Flavor is sweet, but not overly with lots of chocolate and a moderately bitter hops finish. Overall, an amazing beer.

A: Pours a pretty deep pitch black in color with a thin deep brown dome froth.

S: This is a great smelling beer of insanity chocolate

T: Honestly the best way i could describe this beer is like drinking a girl scouts thin mint cookie with a piny hoppiness to complement the rich chocolate flavor.

M: Thick creamy and chewy without being overly sweet in texture. Low alcohol heat allows for the buds to be enriched by the full flavor offered by the beer.

O: Pleasantly impressed by the rich chocolate that comes through. Haven't had an Imperial Stout like this before. Quite refreshing in comparison to others of the same style.

A - very dark, can't see anything through the edges of the glass, this is how I like my stouts. A milk chocolate creamy head that leaves decent lacing.

S - Chocolate! Lots of chocolate, like a bag of bittersweet chocolate chips. Also lots of dark roasted malts.

T - Bam, chocolate everywhere, very tasty beer, it ends with lots of dark roasted malts and a bit of warmth from the alcohol. Not extremely complex, but lots of flavors that are very delicious.

M - Medium to heavy bodied beer with a nice viscous texture as the beer warms up. Light carbonation to balance everything out.

O - Awesome dessert beer or Dessert beer. I would recommend it.

On tap at the Rogue Publick House in PDX. Poured into the Rogue Goblet (a very attractive and heavy piece of stemware!)

Pours a pitch black with a very thick chocolate-brown head that lingers for the entire glass. The pour invites you in immediately.

A milky nose with chocolate and hazelnut aromas. Surprisingly underwhelming.

Wow! The among the smoothest mouthfeels I've encountered. Smooth, smooth, smooth! Like a thick chocolate malt.

Lots of chocolate flavor, but it is a bitter, high-quality chocolate that, though very present, isn't overpowering and is very nicely balanced with the rest of the beer. Milky and a little nutty (hazelnuts and walnuts), there is a pleasant malted finish. It boasts 50 IBU, but this is NOT a hoppy beer: I never tasted the hops at all.

Overall a great winter beer that is perfect for a cold day. Nicely made and well balanced, it is well worth consumption!

Had on-tap at Capone's in Norristown, PA. Poured a dark brown/black color with a bit of ruby on the peripheral. Had an aroma of rich milk chocolate, sugar and roasty malts. Tastes and feels like a chocolate milkshake. Definitely roasty as well, but hot damn...CHOCOLATE. The 8% ABV is undetectable in this chocolate masterpiece. It basically is as advertised...a double chocolate stout.

Full-bodied with low carbonation. Very syrupy...almost like Hershey's chocolate syrup, a bit watered down and with alcohol. Pretty damn good but also absolutely a dessert beer. Very thick and heavy. Recommended!

First had: on tap at Capone's, Norristown, PA

Poured into a sampler glass, though this was definitely one worth a full pour. Opaque black color, very dark brown edges when held to the light, the head was absent, probably just due to the pour. I went in for a sip, but first got hit with an unmistakable aroma of rich chocolate milk. Taste of rich chocolate, Hershey bars, and...more chocolate. A subtle earthiness near the finish, with some roast coming through, but mostly just a one-dimensional big chocolate bomb, and in some cases--like this--that is not a bad thing. Smooth, full-bodied, lusciously drinkable.

Had this on tap at O'reilly's served in a pint.

The color and appearance is pitch black and rich with some viscosity with a thin tan cap. The aroma is very chocolatey, but not overly sweet more or less has a bittersweet cocoa aroma w/ a slight hint of fruit. The feel is rich w/ a moderately full body with roasted and mildly sweet feel with mild alcohol overall.

The flavor is much like the aroma there is a mild cocoa taste which has slight bittersweet chocolate and roasted malt with light bitter hop accent which also augments the slight roasted malt and mild alcohol flavor. The beer is heavy on the cocoa and chocolate malt which pretty much overwhelms the rest of the taste after half the pint is finished. I enjoy the mild yeast fruitiness and light roast in the finish. Overall a pretty intense stout, not necessarily too sweet for a cocoa beer, the mild fruity and roasted finish are good which means you don't have too much cloying sweetness and the alcohol is pretty restrained for an 8% beer. I would order this again if I see it on tap.

A - Almost black dark brown, motor oil like. Light brown head that lingers.

S - Dark roasted malt aroma and cocoa. Pleasant.

T - Small amount of dark malt and a dominant cocoa flavor. The texture makes it feel like drinking a dark chocolate syrup minus the added sugar.

M - Full bodied. Thick and milky. Low to medium carbonation.

O - The most cocoa flavor I have ever tasted in a beer. Probably doesn't go well with most food but it's a perfect dessert beer.

On tap at the Rogue brewpub in SF (in a nice Rogue goblet, to boot). Pours a very dark black that is typical of a stout, with a minimal amount of head. The aroma is dominated by the sweet chocolate, along with a bit of coffee and licorice. The taste is almost like a milk chocolate beer, with the milk chocolate coming at the frontend with some hops and bitterness showing through after the initial chocolate blast. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and carbonated, but very smooth and enjoyable.

Overall, a nice stout that is worth checking out if you don't mind being hit hard by chocolate in your beer. It is very drinkable for a double stout since the ABV is 8% and the alcohol is hidden relatively well.

On tap at the Flying Saucer in Houston, TX.

A: Pours and opaque brown color. Nearly black. A one finger tan head forms, but that has good retention. Nice lace is left behind.
S: Toasted malt, bread, biscuit, and tons of chocolate. Lightly bitter bakers chocolate. Maybe some coco nibs as well. A chocolate bomb for sure, and I really enjoy it.
T: Huge chocolate flavors that are intermingled with toasted malts, bread, and biscuit. Very sweet with a brownie and fudge like flavor that last forever. A full on desert beer, but one that is very enjoyable.
M/D: A medium to full body. A slightly syrupy body, a little tp much so. Though it works. Very easy to drink. A great beer to sip on at the end of the day.

I have not been a fan of Rogue beers lately, but this is very good. Think some of the Southern Tie stouts, and you will get the gist. Maybe not an everyday beer, but something that is very enjoyable for desert or a digestif.

Poured from the tap a dark ominous black with a trace of a tan head that stuck to the side of the tulip glass. Smell was heavy with chocolate and liqourice and roasted grain with a hint of alchohol hding behind the grain. Taste was bold coffee and chocolate with a finish of warming alchohol but a nice clean taste of the roasted grain. Alchohol is there but does not dominate the palate and just hides behind the bulk of this beer. Mouthfeel is smooth and dense, not heavy but very nice beer to sip on and leave on the palate. Overall a very nice beer I had this with a plate of jambalay and it really held its ground against the spice of the food and in my opinion comlimented the food well. Nothing like some cajun on a cold day with a great stout. I will definately be trying this beer again.

On tap @ the Rouge Ales Public House (Newport, OR) on 8/29/11. Served in a goblet.

Pours black, with a thin covering of dark mocha head. This retains with a thin foaminess around the edges, leaving back a decent looking cascade of spotty lace and brown gooey residues. The aroma smells like a big, alcoholic tootsie roll, just dripping with rich chocolate flavors and backed by notes of roast and green citrus. The increased alcohol really adds a strong boldness to the sweetness of the chocolate.

The taste is all thick chocolate up front, just drenching the mouth with sticky sweetness, which is cut short by a wall of burnt crunchy roast and green citric hops. This combines with the chocolate to really give this a ripe earthy tanginess across the back. The finish sees lingering sugars, roast, and green bitterness with just a smidge of warming alcohol in the back. The mouthfeel is full bodied, with a big mouth filling sharp creaminess to the carbonation. There is some heft here to the feel, as you would expect, but the alcohol is overall pretty well hid, with just a slight haze hanging on the breath after each sip.

Well you like the regular Chocolate Stout from Rogue, then you’re probably going to dig this one as well, as it basically just comes off as bolder and fuller feeling take on that from the higher alcohol. I didn’t find to be a HUGE upgrade or anything over the regular version but this was still a pleasant and tasty sipper.

I absolutely love their regular chocolate stout. I use to buy it by the case when the LCBO brought it in. Although I thought this probably wouldn't measure up, it still came up short.

Black with a tan head, thin ring of retention, barely any lace.

Aroma has a bit of dark roasted coffee/espresso and hints of bakers chocolate, but the alcohol really dominates.

The alcohol is really upfront in the flavour as well, detracting from the subtle chocolate and espresso. Bitterness is solid but the hopping seems restrained by Rogue standards.

This is highly attenuated with a very drying alcohol finish. I'd prefer a little sweetness with the chocolate.

Maybe the alcohol would diminish with a little time, but this actually seems bigger than it actually is. I've brewed bigger brews that seemed like they had MUCH less alcohol.

I'm not a fan, but it seems I'm in the minority.
