Taste: Caramel dominates up front, with the piney hops arriving in the middle; after the swallow, the sugary malts overwhelm the palate

Mouthfeel: Thick and syrupy, with moderate carbonation

Overall: Very sweet for an APA; tastes more like a hoppy amber; the thick mouthfeel is a real detractor

Bottle poured into a stein.

A-Pours a deep hazy amber orange with a thin finger of head of off white head

S-Smells of sweet malt, some caramel and citrus.

T-Sweet malt, spicy bitter hops. Caramel and toasted bread. Very faint citrus and floral notes.

M-Light-medium body, lots of carbonation

O-Very malty for an APA but not in a bad way. I continue to fall in love with all the Rogue brews and recommend trying this one for fans of APA.

sort of a mix between a pale ale and a hoppy amber. the pours is Halloween orange, cloudy, with a thick khaki head an inch or so tall with good retention. the nose is citrus hops, dry red malt, and mineral heavy water. its iron rich or something, and looks like it with its rust color. it has an orange juice taste to it, fresh squeezed, but isn't acidic. its also really bitter on the hop front, balanced out a little bit by some gentle candy sweetness from the malt. complex but pretty well balanced. unconventional. fuller body makes it more of a sipper than a pounder, but it does have very lively carbonation which keeps it from becoming too filling. overall a solid pale ale from rogue, I like the choice of malts, and wherever that citrusy orange flavor comes from is great. not my favorite in the chatoe rogue series, but a solid brew here.

Served in a standard shaker from the bottle. Poured a deep rusty orange with slightly golden hues to it. There was good, strong, rocky head with pretty good lacing to it. The nose was very malt forward, lots of strong caramel and very subtle hops. The hops were spicy and floral, and very muted overall. The taste was again quite full on the caramel and sweet. There were a lot of hops and they were a little too harsh. They mellowed out as the beer warmed. The mouthfeel was great though. It had good carbonation and a nice full mouthfeel. It was a pretty good beer overall. I feel like it might be better classified as an IPA at 90 IBU.

Bought a bottle of this at Total Wine right before the holidays. Have been saving this to pair with the right food. As per the bottle, fish & smoked foods would do well. I decided to finally crack it open with some cheeses (habanero cheddar -paired well, goat milk - not so much) from DiBruno Bros.

Poured into a tulip glass for review. Nice vigorous pour produced a nice frothy slight off-white head. Crystal clear ruby amber with no noticeable carbonation going on. Aroma is very malt forward. Caramelly & melanoidin rich malts. Residual sugars, maybe brown sugars, hide any aroma hops intended.

Tastes malty just like in the nose. Rich caramel malts with residual sugars but not cloying. Faint hop bitterness balances nicely. Feels a bit creamy, somewhat luscious due to the seemingly heavy amount of malt flavors going on. Medium-full, perhaps a little sticky sweet.

I love what this beer has going on. I admire Rogue's approach using all ingredients from Oregon including what I assume is mostly their own products from their farm. This one delivers. A great malt forward beer that I could come back to. Keep beers like these coming!

hazy rusted orange glow with a billowing and sticky off white head. Smells like a grapefruit citrus pine bomb with a nice malt body below it. Slightly resinous with hints of caramel and tobacco.

Gorgeous hop showcase on this brew. Fresh piney hop resin explodes on the tongue. Bright citrus character through out. Medium malt body carries the vibrant hop flavors over the tongue. The back end of the tongue receives a punch of grapefruit flavor and wallop of bitterness. Piney hop resin lingers in the mouth coating the tongue and making the mouth water. Rogue's house yeast gives this beer it's crisp carbonation and friendly body.

A new standard for homegrown brews and APA's a like.

Appearance - Pours a cloudy, burnt orange color with an off-white, puffy 2 finger width head. Good retention. Fair lacing with good stick.

Smell - Caramel and citrus primarily. Bread aroma comes through as it warms. Not much else.

Taste - Lightly toasted bread character to start, with hints of caramel, then gives way to a firm, moderate citrus hop bitterness. Touches on spice. Subtle, lingering pith bitterness in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, though it coats the mouth nicely. Soft, but well carbonated.

Overall - A very good, though somewhat safe pale ale from Rogue. Great balance. Sessionable, if it weren't so darn pricey. Maybe not a beer I'd buy again, unless it were offered in six packs at better value.

Deep copper with a slight amount of haze that clears on warming. Light tan head with decent lacing and retention. Caramel floral aroma, very understated. Earthy with light fruit and even lighter spice. Medium to dry with light to medium bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel leans towards soft.

a - poured a one finger thick bubbly tan head into a snifter that left a thin ring and sheet throughout. the body was a bright amber color.
s - caramel aromas dominate.
t - citrus fruits, some spicy hops with a nice malt backbone. very balanced.

On draft at Scotty's

Pours cloudy copper with a decent off white head. Good lacing and retention.

Aroma is on the malty side with some citrus notes, but way too much sweetness for a pale.

Unfortunately aroma carries over into flavor. Very weird profile. Entirely too much sweetness for a pale ale, but still finishes bitter and astringent somehow. Flavors are all over the place.

Decent medium bodied and quite resinous creating a viscous mouthfeel. Got a little cloying.

A complete mess. I'm amazed this is only 40 IBU with as astringent a finish as it has, but way too malty up front. All around mediocre.

Bottle pour at the BevMo Holiday Beerfest held at Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear dark orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt and some herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a medium hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some nice hop flavors.

Pours dark amber in TEKU glass. Lots of thick off-white head that lingers.

Smell is malty with light hints of citrus hops.

Taste is malt up front. Lot so bitterness that lingers on the tongue. Mild citrus character.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied. Lots of carbonation.

Overall this was good. Bitterness balances the malt well.

Appearance: Pours a hazy copper-amber color, with two fingers of off-white head. Good foam retention and nice lacing. A beautiful beer.

Smell: Malty and with citrus notes.

Taste: Malty up front seamlessly shifting into bitter hoppiness that lingers. Malty notes almost remind me of toffee, not my favorite but very interesting.

Mouthfeel: Moderate body with slightly resinous texture. Strong carbonation without being overbearing.

Overall: Another solid beer from Rogue. Solid hop profile, but the strong maltiness reminds me of an amber or red ale at times. Definitely worth trying.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Out of the bottle she pours a nice copper amber, hitting the glass with a bit of a dull presence and continuing. Pretty opaque, but some real nice character hues of orange at the bottom to a nice dark tan brown at the top. Head has lots of retention and cap with a big 4 fingers in size. Clumpy and aggressive. Islands of lace. Very nice looking.

Great nose on this beer. Toasty mix of soft malt and biscuit with brown sugar. A slightly tropical and fruity presence, airy and rich. Quite nice

A real nice solid palate borderline juicy, with a good coating. Palate fills with a good mix of malt sweetness and hop. Hop angle continues to a nice bitter pine, slight astringent but a good light toasty brown sugar finishes through.

Overall a real surprising and drinkable pale ale. Quite memorable would easily have again.

OREgasmic ale pours a cloudy copper color with a small lacing head. There is a nice mellow floral aroma, with hints of a roasted malt. There is a very nice mellow hoppyness, all on a nice mellow malty backbone that finishes just a little sweet. Good full bodied flavor, easy to drink. Overall a really nice APA, its very balanced, not a punch in the face pale, but has a very full flavor.

On-tap. Tumbler glass. From my notes -dec´11-. Deep orangish amber color. Foggy appearance. White froth & rocky crown. Some spooty lacings. Fairly good retention.Mildy caramelized malts, slightly bready & toffee aromas with floral & citric notes to the nose. Flavors show woody hops & some citrics over a sweet -no annoying- malty backbone. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Oily texture. Slightly astringent in the middle. Subtle hoppiness is felt at the finish & lingers on the aftertaste. Refreshing.

Bottle from a friend that brought it to Australia from California.

A - Pours fairly dark copper and bright. Two finger fluffy white head and good carbonation. Quite hazy with the addition of the yeast at the bottom. Good rings of lace and a finger of retention.

S - Some citrus and stone fruits with some nice caramel to balance. Mild yet nice.

T - Stone fruit and some mild citrus again. Reminds me of peaches and plums. Nice Caramel malt component too. A bit spicy as well with a pepper note. There is a certain roughness that comes through in the flavours which is probably the spicy pepper note combining with the hop citrus flavours, and while it seems rough, it isn't altogether unpleasant.

M - Good carbonation, medium body and a lingering stone fruit flavour with some bitterness.

O/D - Not a bad beer from Rogue. I don't think I'd look for it again, but it was nice to try.

Chill hazed orange colored beer with a small tan colored head.

Smell is Northwest hops and sweet malt. Aromas of pineapple, hay, cedar, iced tea and pine.

Starts out dry and earthy despite the sweet smell. Well balanced, earthy flavored but not bitter. Flavors are mostly wood and strong tea.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a decent pale ale that costs too much.

On-tap at the brewery in Newport, OR.

Pours a hazy amber-golden colour, with a solid, almost gelatinous weight to it. Head is a yellowish-white, that forms a fine film and solid ring around the edge of the glass. Lacing is sticky and sheeting, carbonation is powdery. Looks great.

Bright and fresh on the nose, with clean, sharp nuances of white pepper and freshly broken twigs alongside a juice apricot sweetness. Very nicely balanced.

Front palate is light with a hint of pepper, before fruitier notes of citrus rind and peach come through. It's a bit tart and green all around, which develops into a biting wintergreen character on the finish. However, the end is rather clean, and has a rounded smoothness that almost hints at raspberries. Very interesting.

Overall, a very drinkable beer, with lots of interest, and a profile that just makes you want to drink it all day. Nice stuff.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a perfect pint.

This murky red-orange beer has a strong caramel malt aroma with some spicy hops over top. There's also a hint of diacetyl on the nose. The taste is very big on the hops used here, which are a Rogue-unique strain. I get an interesting blend of spicy and piney flavors from them. They seem like they'd be right at home in a pilsner, but still wind up working well with the rich caramel malts and the hint of buttery flavor. The aftertaste is strongly bitter and piney. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and crisply carbonated, and the drinkability is very good. Overall, this is an interesting take on an APA using a Noble-esque hop strain. It won't replace any of my favourites, but it's worth a try.

I think the idea of a brewery growing its own hops and malting its own barley is pretty dang cool, so I had to buy a bomber of this one.

Pours a murky brown with a sturdy off-white head. Decent nose, but as with many Rogue beers, it has a harshness on the palate that is off-putting. Grainy, not well-balanced.

I've tried to like Rogue, but it hasn't happened in the 15 years or so since I had my first one, so it's just not my thing.

But having said that, I've had plenty of beers from Rogue that were better than this one. Would not buy again.

A: Very nice deep cloudy brown/mahogany coloring with 2 fingers of head that dissipates to a thin veil of lace that clings all the way down.

S: Very aromatic. Some dark fruits as well as a nice wheat and malt mix with a hint of doughy yeast. Very nice.

T: Some of those dark fruits coming thru from the get go lead way to the nice floral hoppyness. Little bit of spice mixed in with the bitterness of the hops with a biscuit like after taste that lingers in the mouth. All around very enjoyable.

M: Medium carbonation works well with the flavors making for a medium bodied brew with a thick creamy after taste that lingers around.

O: Pretty impressed with this all around. Nice balance between the dark fruits, malt and hop bitterness and ending on a nice doughy note. Would def try again.

This was bottle poured into a white wine glass.

Appearance; Gorgeous deep, robust amber that obscures the glass, strong finger head with large bubbles, great "cloudy" effect when held to the light

Smell; Tangy floral notes with a grassy undertone, almost lemon like. Second smell reveals bready characteristics, almost like white bread

Taste; Beautiful, bold hop presence, mild malty backing. Tangerine, lemon, presence of sweet malt, pie crust, bread lingering in the back

Mouthfeel; "Medium", heavier on the tongue than anywhere else in the mouth, rich feeling

Overall; A delightful brew. It's well balanced and fresh tasting while still coming on strong with the hopiness. I could take a bomber of this anywhere.

A hazy orangey-copper with a huge cream colored head that I had to let sit for a minute or two before I could even try to explore the beer. Nice lacing. I could smell a nice does of orange rind as I awaited the foam to die down. Once I got to smell the beer up close the citric aroma remained strong, this time both the fruit as well as the rind, and also showing itself was a nice doughiness from the malt. A very nice and inviting aroma. A fruit forward flavor, orange and lemon, with a bready malt base (that gains in strength as it warms) to this. This beer isn't very sweet, its more refreshing with a touch of bitterness that kicks in towards the second half and carries into the aftertaste. Not much life to the flavor though. A crisp medium body to this with a dry finish. Overall, nothing wrong with this beer but I found it to be quite boring.

A: Burnt orange is the right color for this, on the burnt side. Not a see through beer. It's a lovely color that reminds you of the leaves changing in the fall. Nice cream colored head. Poured a good 1" foam head into a Guinness Draught stout glass.

S: Floral hops, medium smell. Not strong or overwhleming.

T: Slight sweet and smooth balanced hop taste. There is a tinge of spice on the back half of the taste. Not much. You might not notice it if you take two sips in a row quickly. The taste does not linger long and makes you want to drink another, so pause yourself to truly notice the spice.

M: This is a light mouthfeel for a APA with a noticeable tingling of carbonation on the tongue.

O: I would buy this in spring and fall to share with friends, again and again. The spice notes would go great with grilled chicken or sausage.
