S- chocolate, mocha, malts, some vanilla, and I can even detect some oatmeal with sweet molasses.

A- beautiful black beer with a creamy mocha head that lasts for the entirety of the pint! The lacing on this beer is unreal, it's absolutely amazing how it sticks to the whole glass.

T/m- subtle well rounded stout. Not overwhelming in any particular are. Chocolate coco flavor, some mocha, a good amount of malts with some tones of vanilla. Very drinkable beer with little to no aftertaste and the alcohol is masked very well. Full bodied could be a little thicker in my opinion.

Can't see it in my Pub mug.

Roast malt, chocolate, and hints of Waffle House coffee form the initial aroma. There's a bit of nuttiness that emerges, possibly due to the oat presence.

Flavor is roast malt dominated, but not bitter until the finish. Notes of chocolate and roast fruitiness add complexity. There's an underlying toasted character.
Phenols surface late.

Body is moderate to slightly full, a little creamy, with low carbonation. There's an astringent note.

Roasty, chocolatey, with a hint of dark fruit. Not my fave stout, but fairly drinkable. Nothing exceptional, but good balance of chocolate and roast flavors.

Appreance- Looks absolutely scrumptious with choclately tones and smooth stout medium head

Smell- Aromas just do not match the look, there is a faint nutty choclate mix, hazelnut maybe, but overall the smell is not punctual or alluring

Taste- Smooth, easiest to drink stout I have ever experienced; however, it does not pop at all and finishes kinda boring

Mouthfeel- Goes down soooo smooth, gentle and light

Overall- Good solid beer, but not Rogue worthy and defiantly not 90+...great winter drinking beer

tap

Pours jet black, quarter inch tannish white head with very fine particles of carbonation dissipates slowly, almost not at all. The carbonation leaves rings up the body of the glass as well, below the surface of the beer, like a nitro pour would, although I don't believe this was a nitro pour.

Smells of roasted coffee, cocoa and toasty malts. Simple, but good balance.

Tastes of oat malts, toasty bready notes, bitter but not acidic coffee, some bitter hop, and a hint of brown sugar.

The body is medium and exceedingly, almost ridiculously creamy and smooth. The word "silky" comes to mind. The carbonation is velvety.

This is a really good stout, I'm starting to wonder if I had a nitro-pour now because of texture. I didn't see the tap myself so I don't know. But this is everything I'd want from an Irish style stout, with the added bonus of oatmeal malts and great flavor to boot, something that sometimes falters in lower ABV stouts. I would have this again. And again.

Happy to find this at Pies & Pints in Middlebury, CT this stout shows a solid black color with a big, never-die chocolatey colored head with lots of luscious lacing. The aroma is a very subtle chocolate-grain, but hard to place. The flavor brings charcoal-dark chocolate and grass hops. Charcoal-malt emerges as the dominant theme but it’s very nicely blended into a highly drinkable, yet tasty brew. This is creamy smooth and velvetty in feel, really wonderful and inviting. Body is solidly medium with a bit of a dry/resinous feel. Very nice and a stout I would easily have any time!

Appearance: Dark brown/black pour, with a modest light brown head that all too quickly reduced to a thin and spotty cover.

Smell: Medium + dark roasted malts overlaid with some spicy hops. Some oats, coffee and chocolate too.

Taste: It seems that the brewer replaced some grains (oats and/or dark malts) with hops; this is clearly an AMERICAN stout. It has a moderately bitter finish, with a relatively bitter and near-burnt aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body with mild carbonation. Has an unusual (for style) light crispness.

Overall: A decent oatmeal stout, but disappointing for a stout made by Rogue. Certainly served too cold and deserving of a re-tasting. I know you feel my pain. ;)

I had this on tap at the Hard Times Cafe in Springfield. My wife ordered one too and didn't like it. I got to experience TWO pints of this!

A: I'm on autopilot now with dark beers: Poured a very dark, chocolate brown color, with a very small head... too small perhaps, considering this on is only 6.1%.

S: Not much smell at all and it was almost as if no thought was put into this aspect. Still, I managed to dredge up a tinge of weak chocolate milk, roast, and yeast...Pacman yeast, that is....

T: It had a really nice cake batter-esque finish that reminded me much more of an Irish Dry stout rather than an oatmeal. Some mild chocolate notes, very little coffee, and the bitterness I got on the finish was primarily from the malt bill.

M: This one was fairly thick, but not slimey (something I often attribute to oatmeal stouts). The lacing was mildly splotchy.

O: This was one of my "starter" beers back when I was just getting used to craft brews, and to be honest, it wasn't as good as I remember it being. Still, I did just drink two pints of it with no effort whatsoever, so... there you have it...

NOTE: This is the EXACT same beer as the Chocolate Stout. The only difference is, with that one, Rogue uses a high grade (expensive) Belgian Chocolate.

Served in a rocks glass at Mellow Mushroom. From notes. Reviewed 2 July 2011.

A: Black dark. Good creamy head. Crazy lacing.

S: Coffee? Dark chocolate. Bitter and stoutish.

T: Bitter, roasted, and creamy-good. Also a bit light and...boring? The aftertaste is vaguely dry and lingeringly bitter.

M: Bitter-good; creamy-smooth.

O: Kind of disappointing. Meh-ish stout. I would have again, but if this glass is any indication, I wouldn't recommend it.

On tap at the Issaquah Brewhouse. I don't know if it is made there or shipped up from Orrih-gawn.

One finger head, not as much effervescence as the industry standard's Guinness. I had two to finish up a night after being already soused. These went down very well, and in the end had the effect of an elephant tranquilizer. I have not slept so deeply or efficiently in years. Maybe they could call this beer "Inception."

I would love to get my hands on a keg of this stuff.

Had on tap at Pour 24 @ NY, NY Hotel, Las Vegas, NV.

Poured a darkest black. Small, dark tan head. Smell was more bold malts and oats than anything else. Taste was direct and simple for a stout, I'd say. Which is to say it was good. Deep, roasted coffee and not-too-bitter chocolate. Went down relatively smooth. Overall, I'd sample another, but this isn't a stout I'd go out of my way for..

What more could you want from an oatmeal stout? It's creamy, delicious, aromatic, and dances perfectly on your tongue. The roasted notes of coffee and chocolate are present but masterfully subdued. Balance is the end result here, and Rogue has achieved it. The color is perfectly dark, the consistency is perfectly stout-like. There are few better examples of this style.

You will not be disappointed by this beer.

Appearance -- Pours a deep dark brown with slim chestnut edges. Zero head on this pint.

Smell -- The aroma is quite roasty with black malt, cocoa, coffee, and black strap molasses sweetness.

Taste -- Black malt, iced coffee, bakers chocolate. Molasses sweetness counterbalanced by earthy hops. The iced coffee flavor is uncanny. Very nice.

Mouthfeel -- Medium body with low carbonation. Otherwise, the body is on point. This lack of bubbles was probably the fault of the establishment I drank this at, but still is not distracting.

Drinkability -- Rogue fans usually cite this as their favorite offering, and I can see the appeal. Good balance and a nice blend of roast flavors. This is definitely one of the better oatmeal stouts I've ever had.

A: Pours a deep black with no light penetration whatsoever. Nice mocha colored head, about 1.5 fingers in height. Very nice lacing down the sides.

S: Upfront I get a lot of chocolate and cocoa, however underneath that I get some sweetness from the oatmeal and a little bit of coffee.

T: This beer has a nice hop presence. The flavor is rounded out with lots of roasted malts, a little bit of chocolate, and a touch or two coffee.

M: Medium bodied with a nice mouthfeel, it coats my mouth.

O: A solid Oatmeal stout, however i would have liked more of an oatmeal flavor less on the chocolate. Overral i still very much enjoy this beer

Bought a bomber at my local bottle shop.

A- Good looking stout. It pours very dark, essentially black. A nice, full, dense head that is a fairly dark brown. The head dissipates within a minute or two with nice lacing on the glass.

S-Pretty good aroma. Smells of mocha and some nuttiness, but with a very nice malty body. Can't smell any hops or much alcohol on the back end.

T-The mocha, coffee like flavor hits immediately with the alcohol taking over soon thereafter. The alcohol is a bit overbearing and it lingers for a significant period of time after it goes down. The body doesn't have much sweetness to it in order to help mask some of the strong alcohol flavors.

M-The body does not live up to what the aroma promises. The beer feels unnaturally light going down with the alcohol overpowering the rest of the flavors. Alcohol lingers at the end.

D-I expected much more from this beer. Not something I would purchase again, whether it be in a bottle or on tap anywhere.

Rogue Shakespeare oatmeal stout, draft

A Dark, can't see thru it. Small head, but with fine bubbles. 4

S Chocolaty and not much else. 3.5

T Deep roasted malt taste. Rich lingering roastyness. No hop flavor to speak of though there is bittering.  There is a little sweetness initially, but it fades to the roast 4

M Medium thick mouthfeel. A little thinner than I expected, more of a medium bodied beer. Carbonation seemed about right.  Nice lacing.  4

D A good repeatable beer, would have another. 4

On-tap at Heroe's (Claremont)

A: Pours essentially black with a dense, creamy tan head. Nice sticky lacing to go with it.

S: Tons of roasted malts on the nose with a strong earthy hop aroma. Plenty of bitter dark chocolate and cocoa powder as well. Not much sweetness, maybe some burnt sugar.

T: A moderate level of bitterness with lots of earthy hop flavor to go with it. Cocoa powder and bitter, baker's chocolate are definitely there. Quite a lot of roasted malt flavor as well.

M: Medium in body with a moderate level of carbonation. Was expecting a bit more silky mouthfeel, though.

D: Like a lot of Rogue beers, this is good, but not amazing and not really worth the price they charge.

#97. On tap at summits' wayside tavern in Snellville, GA.

(Appearance) Arrives cold and black as night. No visible carbonation. Not much exciting but it does alright. 3.5

(Smell) cocoa bean and oatmeal malt. Slight bitter espresso coffee tones Earthy hops. Well balanced and potency is not bad. 4.5

(Taste) Very thin cocoa flavor and a light touch of coffee. Tastes earthy with some very bold characteristics that complement and round the other flavors. Toasty wood tones also here, light smoky finish. Slightly on the thin and borderline bitter side, but overall pleasant taste. It could go anywhere from here, with wildly varying results. I found it original and pleasant overall, and would leave it just about the same 4.5

(Mouthfeel) that oatmeal Pairs well with this thin beer to make a smooth textured but creamy mouthfeel. Medium body. Alcohol is tough to detect. 4

(Drinkability) Fairly drinkable. No flavors are straining and that smoky finish avoids being cloying. ABV is good. Slightly filling, non expectedly. I'd be likely to get more. 4

Verdict:

Served on tap at some Italian restaurant I visited while in North Carolina.

A: As a barista, the first thing that struck me about this beer was how much like espresso it looked. Black body that let almost no light through, creamy brown one finger head that dissipated slowly. Left moderate to heavy amounts of lacing. Really a beautiful beer, especially to someone like me who loves coffee.

S: Malty, coffee/espresso hints, chocolate.

T: Amazing. A lot of malts up front, some chocolate and coffee, followed by a slight hint of hops and coffee to finish. I feel like my years of being a coffee snob (no Starbucks for me) have led me to this beer.

M: Creamy, a little bit of carbonation, just the right amount. \

D: This is a sipper. It took me the whole meal to get through one, but it was worth it.

I will definitely seek this beer out again. One of the better beers I've had.

A very nice dark black color, but disappointingly "thin" looking with not so much head.

Taste is less sweet than I expected, seemed more like a riff on a dry stout. Taste is fairly nice, a little roasted bitterness, some hops, slightly acrid, but again very similar to a dry stout in my opinion. The body/mouthfeel is a little thin -- I was really hoping for something more creamy and full.

Not a bad beer, but didn't really live up to its reputation...

This is an oatmeal stout? I've been enjoying it for years now. I thought it was just because it's tasty

A - low head very dark brown. In this light it's almost crimson color. The body is a bit clear but definitely opaque. Great spider man webbing on the glass

S - roasted sweet. Chocolate and caramel malts. Sweet I hope there is more after warming

T - creamy roasted toast. For some reason I'm hungry for vegimite now. This is not so much a sweet beer as it is a non-drying beer. I'm hungry for salty foods

M - a bit thin. Maybe the pour. But has a great silky quality. Smooth and creamy

D - well this is a fine anytime beer by me.

Had on tap at Quenchers, poured into a standard pint glass. Pours nice and dark black with a lasting finger of cream. Progression down the pint leaves a nice faint lace the whole way down the glass.

Putting the pint to the nose there is instantly evidence of toasted malt and oatmeal. A drink confirms these flavors which last through the drink giving way to an interplay of hops and bitter chocolate. Subsequent sips have the hop character at the end giving way to more chocolate and light toasted oatmeal flavors. By the end of the pint the bitterness fades and is almost absent.

Easily drinkable. Something I'd call a summer stout; a stout tasty enough to hold it's own as a stout but not so thick and bold that you'd avoid drinking this in the sun or at a BBQ. This is reinforced by a lack of booziness, as well. I could see myself getting through a good number of these if I wasn't paying attention.

A great stout, exemplary of the oatmeal style.

On tap at Rogue Ales Public House in SF.

Black color with a creamy tan head.

Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and hops.

Flavor is roasted malt, coffee, toast, and a little chocolate although not nearly as assertive as in their chocolate stout.

Nice oatmeal smoothness on the palate. Fairly full body.

A very enjoyable beer overall. Rogue is underrated on this site I find. Maybe it's their price point.
