Cresant ( Louisville, Kentucky )B- / 3.3look: 3.5 | smell: 3 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3 | drink: 3 rDev: -14.5%Poured this 22 oz. brown bottle into a Sam Adams glass. No date. The body was deep brown/gold. The second pour was cloudier. A huge head developed and left mild lacing. Smell was brown sugar and sweet malts. Alcohol. Taste was spicy. Bright hops that had sustain. Cocoa. Aspirin. Drying bitterness. I feared the taste would reflect the aroma but the hops presence was very welcome. Mouthfeel was medium in body and carbonation. GilGarp ( Windsor, Colorado )A- / 4.1look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | drink: 4 rDev: +7.8%22oz. brown bottle, no date. Served cool in an imperial pint glass. I left this one to settle after reading the first review. Substantial yeast layer at the bottom of the bottle that I tried not to disturb during the pour. It has a hazy, dark redish, amber color with towering rocky head. The head settles slowly leaving lots of sticky lacing on the glass. Aroma is really nicely hopped with some underlying sweetness. There is a little eathy musky quality in there too. It definately has the signs of being a solid NW IPA. Really pleasant sweet hop flavor with candied citrus and orange rind. It has a substantial malt backbone holding it up with carmel and toasted grains. Some apples and pears, maybe a touch of vanilla. Mouthfeel is smooth and low in carbonation. Medium bodied with good balance beginning to end. Overall, a totally adequate beer. Not exceptional but far from bad. I wish I could say something better but it's just a 'good' American red. ChainGangGuy ( Kennesaw, Georgia )B / 3.6look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | drink: 3 rDev: -5%16 ounce pint - $7.50 at Taco Mac in Kennesaw, Georgia. Appearance: Opaque, chestnut brown body with a ½ inch head formed of whitish foam. Smell: Toasty, pale maltiness, lightly roasty as well, and with some obscured sweetish hints nearly hidden beneath the citrusy, woody hop notes. Taste: Base of standard pale along with distinctly toasty Munich and a smidgen of darker malts with some sweet touches of dark brown sugar and caramel. The hops largely provide a citric taste of white grapefruit with a sharp, brash bitterness, as well as, perhaps, a woodsy character. Light yeastiness. Finishes as dry and longly bitter as one might expect. Still remains a bit citric even in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. There's some slight malt chewiness within. Drinkability: It's another boldly bitter, hop-forward offering from Rogue. If that tickles your fancy then hop on the boat! If not, well... gunnerman ( Lake Worth, Florida )A- / 4.2look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | drink: 4 rDev: +10%Two of my favorite past times come together, Rogue Beer and Deadliest Catch. Northwestern Ale pours an amber color with a fluffy head that leaves a bit of lace on the glass. Smell is sweet upfront with hints of citrus and also toffee. The taste has that sweetness up front and a bitter towards the finish, I can taste chocolate, citrus, and a bready like quality. Overall this left that hop taste in my mouth for quite sometime afte it was finished, an exciting beer for an awesome fisherman. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 08-01-2009 13:11:25 | id: 966712
bark ( Linköping, Sweden )B+ / 4look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | drink: 4 rDev: +5.5%The liquid is a bit hazy; the colour is dark brown-red. The large off-white compact head sinks slowly, leaving some fine lacing. The smell is fresh and bitter with sweet notes of treacle/caramel. Hoppy bitter flavours, it feels like there is an aggressive bitterness hidden somewhere in the background. I also noted some lightly roasted nutty flavours. The taste begins with well-behaved sweet notes with hints of caramel. It is complemented by a somewhat reserved elegant bitterness, as well as notes of bread, cookies and sweet citric fruits, flowery flavours and touches of treacle and shellfish. The long aftertaste is bitter and elegant with dry malty notes, some cookies and citric fruits. The carbonation is medium strong; the small bubbles are fresh. The liquid is smooth. As I expect when it comes to a beer from Rouge, this is a high-quality drink with lots of harmonic and pleasing flavours. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 07-30-2009 15:05:50 | id: 965310

GIVEMEBACKMYSON ( Bethel, Alaska )B- / 3.45look: 4 | smell: 3 | taste: 3 | feel: 4.5 | drink: 4 rDev: -9.6%Translucent amber with thin cream atop. OK so far. Smell is mildly metallic with a floral honey backing. With the taste is a bit of an alkaline notion that lingers throughout, although it gets usurped ever so briefly by a crisp and puckering scowl of a hop bite. The malt flavors of biscuit and cocoa show up only after everything is swollowed and nearly forgotten. Caramel is the straggler at the tail end of the whole fleet. Mouthfeel is a bit dirty and alot creamy and generally pretty encouraging. I find myself returning for more and it certainly is largely pretty good. But, a earthy caramelzed hued amber could have really been awesome here. Sure, the number next to IBUs on the bottle would have been lower, and I love hops as much or more than the next guy, but hey, you know, I'm just sayin'. A huge fluffy white head has nice retention and fair lacing. S- Nice spicy hop scent, not overpowering though. very light malt scent. Not much yeast esters. T- The taste is somewhat disappointing, the hops strike the tongue initially which is really nice almost as hoppy as a dipa. But the body of the beer, some of the fruitiness that is expected from an ale is missing. It makes the finish bland and boring. M- Light bodied, more than is desired in my opinion. But rather refreshing. D- Very drinkable beer, I love the hops in this brew but it lacks character and body. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 07-28-2009 02:18:48 | id: 963784
