I’m picking up a casual hop aroma – strange for a porter, especially a mocha porter, but I can’t complain. The black lacquer body is full and silky and paints the glass with elegant lace. The alleged mocha property is either deliberately muted or merely implied. It’s certainly not a core, defining characteristic, which is instead derived from darkly roasted (if not charred) grains. The finish here is this beer’s most alluring asset. It is long and smoky and fades out gracefully like the closing scene of a Bogart movie.

Deep and dark brownish-black. Thin layer of persistent tan-colored lace speckles the glass nicely. Aromas are chocolate-covered caramel squares with a dash of bitterness. Flavor is thick and creamy, with lots of chocolate in there. There's also some coffee flavor as well. Finishes with a nicely-balanced dose of bitterness to match wits against the sweetness. Solid mouthfeel and quite drinkable. Rogue scores with anoter winner for me.

I wasn't expecting to drink a porter on this hot summer's day, but after a sample from the bartender, I had to have a pint of this. wonderful stuff! Beautiful coal black color with a creamy tan head. Excellent full robust body with wonderful chocolate and "woodsy" aroma. the taste throughout hints of licorice, cloves, horehound- wondeful balance and smoothness throughout the sip/gulp accounts fro a very high mouthfeel from me. thought that the taste packed a wallop of sophistication and complexity. this is an excellent beer the would hold a candle to any porter that I have recently had on tap. Kudos to all at Rogue ales!!

Poured an almost black color with a tan head. Thick lacing developed on the glass. The aroma had coffee and roasted malt tones. The flavor was big on roasted malt and coffee, with a bitter chocolate tone lingering in the background. Some bitterness was detected with this porter.

Medium bodied, smooth with a slightly dry finish. The coffee and some burnt tones linger on the tongue. A decent porter that could have used a little boost on the chocolate front.

Enjoyed on tap at Chumley's in Lafayette.
The pour resulted in a deep brown body capped off bye a small creamy tan head. Smell is very malty, notes of coffee and chocolate are present as well. First taste alludes to some bitter chocolate along with a subtle smokiness. Mouthfeel is a little thin though. I think I would enjoy this more if it had the body of their Chocolate stout. Overall it's a decent offering from Rogue.

Served on tap at Kclinger's Publik House

Appearance - Pours out a thick black with some reddish hues inside. Looks very nice upon first pour. Head laces throughout.

Smell - Coffee, nuts, chocolate, and a lot of roasted malts are abundant. A good, albeit thinner aroma.

Taste - I loved the flavor of this one. Not as well rounded and full-bodied as the Chocolate Stout, but definitely up there.a lot of nuttiness mixed with the coffee and chocolate tastes. Could be tweaked a litle to give it a bit more balance. Not as sweet of a chocolate as the Stout, either.

Mouthfeel - A tad watery and thin for this one, but not so much that it would deter me from having more of these.

Drinkability - Definitely could cozy up with one of these more than once. not too high in the ABV, so can be consumed easy.

Overall - I reccommend it. Good brew from a great brewery. I will take the Chocolate Stout over this every time, but this is still a beer worthy of some looks.

Incredible malty-chocolate flavor. The tase was rich and thick. Real heavy on the tongue and smooth to the palate. But that may work against it because you may get tired of the taste before you're tired of drinking. Excellent aroma which is enhanced even more after the first sip. Dark in color with a thin head and nice lace.

Found on tap at the Bulldog.

Pours very dark brown/black with a very good head. Pleasant roasted smell with woodsy hops present.

Taste is of roasted coffee and bitter chocolate. Some hop bitterness at the end reminds you that this is inded beer.

The beer is a little watery and could be thicker.

A very pleasnat beer to drink. I could drink this in the morning instead of coffee -- I just would not be very productive.

i had this at Delaney's cafe in new haven last week and i couldn't stop drinking it. fresh pulled with creamy great head , malt - hop aroma, roast malt favor with hops in the finish. this is cask ale at it's finest .
half of the experience in cask ales is how there treated at the bar and Delaney's does it right.

Had this on tap at the Saucer. Deep brown color that permits the slightest amount of light to penetrate. Creamy, frothy brown head leaves lots of lacing.

Fresh coffee smell with roasted chocolate malts and hops that linger as well.

Malts all come through in the taste. The bitterness of the hops aren't too overpowering, but seem to rule the roost.Tastes like bittersweet baker's chocolate and cappuccino. They definitely named the beer correctly.

On the lighter side of a medium mouthfeel with carbonation ever present.

Better than the bottle, but either way not hard to put a few of these babies back.

Deep black color with a realy nice rocky caramel colored head and great lacing. Great nose of what else, coffe and also some really nice toasted dark grain. Nice flavores of roatsed and even charred oats and grains. Nice coffe flavors with a nice bitter espresso hop bit.

Deep brown head, dense and frothy; like a capit keeps the beer in the glass. Makes it appear thicker than it is.
Dark brown pour, like cola color. Great aroma, good earthy qualities and bit chocolaty.

Tastes like a bitter chocolate. The bitterness is pronounced in every sip, but that seems typical from the few Rogues I've had.

I've become a big Rogue fan, and several of their beers are among my favorites. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. Not a bad beer by any means, but just to thin and dry for the style. Reminds me of Shakespeare, but thinner, almost watered down. Has a chocolate-expresso flavor, but the bitterness is more prominent. I am a big porter fan, but this is no Fuller's (or even Anchor or Samuel Smith). I would like to compare this to Sierra Nevada (which is the porter this reminds me of). (The "on tap" is a mistake. I had this in the bottle. I'll change it at some point).

In all my experience with porters, this one is one of the best I have ever tried. I wzs greated with a dark brown, almost stout colored appearance. It was topped off with very little head, but it did leave a nice lace effect. The smell was of coffee and chocolate (This might explain why it's called Mocha Porter). It had a taste that was very similar in many respects. A strong Coffee taste leading to a strong choclate taste. Fantastic. It was everything a Porter should be. Not too hoppy by any standards, but the malt head should realy enjoy this. Thank you MacGregor's for carrying this.

Deep brown-black with 3 finger brown head, settles to a small cap, and laces well in webs.
Coffee and alcohol esters in the aroma, a molasses type aroma develops with warming.
Chocolate and coffee tastes (mocha) with roasted malt.
Very smooth, slightly bitter in the back, thinner than it looks, only a light-medium body.
Good representation of the style, and very drinkable, had this after shoveling 2' of wet snow, and it was great to come inside for.

A beautiful dark brown beer with a creamy head. The nose is coffee and chocolate with some malt thrown in to keep it interesting. The taste is much like the nose, with coffee dominating in the front, but finishing smooth and chocolatey with a some bitterness. Nice body and carbonation, an excellent beer.

Dark ruby with a rather dark tan lace.
Chocolate, coffee and sweet malt.
Smooth and dense, slippery on the tongue.
Roasted malts combine with a touch of chocolate, coffee, and a nice hop toward the end helps round things out. Very roasted finish that sticks around.

Poured a deep opaque brown, with a light bubbly mocha-colored head, and a tad of stain and lace. Smelled of sweet chocolate, a little bit of smoke, and floral and bitter fruit hop scents. Tasted of great roasted barley on top of big dark malts. Palate was largely of very smooth chocolate notes that were unobtrusive and barely sweet. The end of profile brought on grapefruit bitterness, with a finish that was a nice balance of dark malt, coffee/chocolate bittersweet character, and a controlled version of the classic Rogue hoppiness.

Just about thin mouthfeel, this was a calm but tasty porter. The mocha notes were reminiscent of Rogue Chocolate Stout. Very easy to drink, this fits my tastes for a porter, albeit a flavored one.

The appearance is quite beautiful, pitch black with a tan head. Like others have said I was also surprised by the aroma and taste. The aroma is hoppy and toasty. The taste hoppy, burnt, and heavy. The mouth feel is great, thick and full. It finishes with a slight burnt orange.

A dark dark beer with a bitter, coffee smell. It came to the table with a tan blanket of head that was on the thin side, and a decent collar with pretty good lacing.

I couldnt get a good smell out of this one. There was the basics: Roasted and Chocolate smells, some hops. The taste was a good, well rounded and tasty.

an all around decent beer.

When visiting the brewery I tried this moca porter and thought it was just about average. This porter poured a dark brown with very little foam and some lace. The smell of malts and chocolate had an little less aroma than other chocolate porters. The taste was a bit to bitter for my taste for a chocolate porter that sort of took away the mocha taste. The bitterness was a little overpowering. Will try the bottle version later. The tap just wasn't what I expected!

Pours out chocolate brown. Smell is mild, with some coffee overtones with truffles in there. Taste is good, but a little sweet for my taste in porters. Flavors aren't that well developed and a bit shallow. Good, but not exceptional porter. I'll try it in the bottle next time to see if there's any difference..

This one poured dark and opaque with a light and fluffy head. I just had to poke my finger in it, causing the nice froth to deflate shortly after I did that.

It smelled like a smoky tootsie roll, with chocolate and malty notes. I also detected a nose of citrusy hops. When I first had a taste, the hops were pretty overpowering. Soon after, a chocolatey, coffee flavor came through, follower by a smoky flavor. At the finish of the beer, it was back to the bitterness of the hops again. Citrus, then mocha, then bitter. Pretty complex. This beer smells malty, but tastes hoppy to the last drop.

Dark mahogany brown, with a moderate sized tan head. Aroma has slight hints of chocolate, but no noticeable coffee. Flavor is mostly of chocolate with coffee highlights, and some roasted malt, but no hops. The surprising and overpowering sweetness of the flavor is offputting. Also, the mouthfeel is slick, greasy, and somewhat heavy. No need to come back to this one.

Had this on tap at the brewery and found it to be rather lacking in flavor. The beer had a pretty good carbonation which was apparent despite the fact that you could not see through the glass to the other side. Kind of surprised. Will try reviewing again at a later date.
