Issaquah Ménage À Frog | 750 ml. | 9.0% ABV | 2011

Brewer: Rogue Ales
Style: Tripel
Glass: Oversize wine glass

Ingredients: Pilsner malt, Saaz hops, Belgian candi sugar, water, abbey yeast

22° plato
30 IBU

Appearance:
Deep honey-yellow with a wispy and receding alabaster crown.

Aroma:
Fruity, playful and sweet.

Taste:
Pears, lemons, and peaches. Lightly roasted malts balance things out. Actually I'm quite pleased by the taste. It's sweeter and fruitier than most Belgian tripels, but it seems to work well. What it lacks in complexity it makes up in boldness of flavor.

Mouthfeel:
Light, almost ephemeral for a tripel. I somehow wish it were a little more substantial.

Harmony:
Nice and chock full of flavor, but not a classic.

Would I get it again?:
Maybe. There are a lot of good tripels out there. This one stands out in fruitiness.

Served from bottle into Mikkeller taster flute. Poured hazy golden yellow with minimal white head. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, wood, caramel, earth, and subtle earth hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, wood, earth, dark fruit, caramel, fruit hop, and subtle sweet alcohol. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. There was quite a bit going on in this one if I'm honest. Fairly complex and very refreshing throughout the glass. Nice notes going on for the style. Really glad I got the chance to try this one and suggest that you do the same.

Served in a Tripel Karmeliet tulip glass (the big one).

Yeah, I bought this because of the name alone. *sigh* Oh well... Anyway, this stuff pours a lightly hazy golden-straw topped by a short finger of lightly cream-white foam. The nose comprises banana Belgian candi sugar, light clove, and sourdough. The taste brings in more of the same, with the bread really coming through powerfully. Beneath that layer lies one of straight candy sweetness laced with a touch of booze. Then comes a brief bit of Belgian spiciness before the other two layers return with a vengeance. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a pretty sad tripel, one that definitely skimps on the Belgian characteristics that make the style shine. I big disappointment, especially for the nearly $15 I paid for this bottle...

Last beer I had on-tap at Rogue's brewery in Newport OR during a recent visit.

Pours a lovely pure yellow colour, with a firm but translucent haze. Head is white, persistent and huge, although it leaves no lacing whatsoever as it falls. Carbonation is powdery when the glass is tilted. Looks good.

Big Belgian characters on the nose: buttered bread, baked beans, roundness. It's smooth, but sharp and pleasant. Awesomely traditional and very, very good.

Light buttery characters on the front, before moving into some smooth organics. Hint of floral notes (perhaps lavender) before a dry, phenolic finish. It's light but rather biting on the end, but leaves no ringing residuals on the aftertaste. Feel is smooth but light.

Overall, this is a very tasty brew, and a really good tripel. I'll admit, I wasn't expecting all that much: I find it rare to get a non-Belgian tripel that's really worthy of the style, but this is pretty damn good.

Pours a hazy orange-ish to yellow with a little white to no head. In the aroma, banana and a small candy sugar. In the taste, banana, small candy sugar, and a small alcohol like taste. A small alcohol bite and a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a small dryness and light candy sugar in the aftertaste. Dry banana and a small alcohol taste, EH! Quite basic.

Issaquah Ménage À Frog

Rogue Ales

Pours a dark golden color with a small, short livid white head and no lacing. Aromas of estery Belgian abbey yeast, with lots of fruit, bubblegum, banana and bready notes. In the taste, more fruity notes, (pear, apple, banana) and some sweet bubblegum notes. Very faint herbal hop character and low bitterness. Mostly sweet, with bubblegum and fruity esters sticking out. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a nice carbonation sting. Finishes relatively clean with some lingering sweetness. Overall, a pretty nice American interpretation of a Belgian Tripel. Fruity, somewhat sweet, and pretty tasty.
