My first review in a very long time.
I've been aging several beers for the last 5 years or so. This one is part of that lot. I realize it isn't a high ABV selection, but I'm experimenting with everything.
Obviously this one is past it's prime. But it still resembles, very closely, the Black Obi Soba that I remember when it was brand new. Good pour, thin and opaque black. Weak nose, even in a snifter, tobacco, chocolate. Tastes toasted chocolate/coffee, raisins and alchohol in the finish. The time has taken the edge off the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is watery and weak.
Overall I think this beer was below average fresh, the age obviously doesn't help it, especially after this amount of time.
For what it's worth.

Almost like a black IPA, without the hops. Not bad

Black core with dark brown edges, light brown head. Kinda cool looking. Nose is roasted malt, a bit of smoke. Taste is porter-like with a bit of a roasty-smokey thing with moderate sweetness. After a while it gets boring, but at least not watery like its sibling Soba Ale. Body is light, carbonation is mild-moderate but sharp.
Better than the last one, but still not much to say. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

Bought from Marukai $6.99
Dark muddy brown color
Heavy creamy mouth feel
Medium carbonation
Roasted malt taste, aftertaste reminds me of soba noodles
Overall it was good to try, but Rogue has other beers that I would prefer over this.

This is definitely an unusual sort of 'stout' but it goes well with food. Not overpowering but still delivering some character, in the form of roasted nut, light wheat, and maybe coffee.
