Still has that Rogue flavour and character even though the bottle I had was intended for export. Big sweetness from the malt and also the buckwheat in an odd but intriguing way. Something Id pair with sugar cane seared seafood preferably salmon.

Presentation: 650ml brown bomber bottle. This beer is "dedicated to the entrepreneurial spirits who helped America survive prohibition."
Appearance: Hazy/cloudy pale straw yellow. Head is a thin creamy white foam, with some sticking and staying power.
Smell: Fruity, grainy, toasted and light caramel in the aroma.
Taste: A very crisp and flavourful right from the start. The tight carbonation helps to create a creamy mouthfeel for this medium-bodied brew and lends a refreshing lightness to it. Carbonation can be likened in feel and taste to that of seltzer water -- dry, thirst quenching, minerally, etc. Malt flavours flux between toasted and nutty, with very little detectable sweetness, but enough to balance. Some bready, very light background caramel and grain tannin flavours follow. Hop bitterness is a healthy one with sharp citrus rind flavours and lemony undertones. A bit of tartness is also present. Finishes with dry grain flavours.
Notes: Rogue has out done themselves once again, but this time without their characteristic big malt and big hop profiles. Buckwheat Ale is a breed onto itself and most definitely worth the try. Let the beer warm-up just a bit to mellow and pull out more of the sweetness, if desired.
Note on Buckwheat: Better known as soba, buckwheat is not a type of wheat but a member of the rhubard family (a fruit, not a grain!) Buckwheat has been a longtime staple of Japanese cuisine because of its nutritional value. Buckwheat is high in potassium, phosphorous, vitamin B (50 percent more than wheat) and protein, and its virtually fat-free. The fruits of buckwheat are like small beechnuts, which are milled to separate the edible groats from the dark brown hulls. The groats are then roasted and used more or less like a grain (a good example is Kasha).

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pilsner glass.
Head of foam was not laced a good 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch think. Sparkling and pearly white in appearance. Body color was a delicate honey-yellow brown, and a bit murky. Head was long lasting, and I could see bubbles still coming up minutes after I first poured.
Aroma a faint was still present. Not quite a bouquet-ish like scent, but more like picking a single peculiar flower out of field (or garden) and absorbing the smell for the first time. Could detect a hint of the buckwheat in the aroma... like kasha before you roast it.
Taste and mouthfeel was crisp and pleasant. Good carbonation without a biting after-taste. Lemony hops taste in the beginning... smooth buttery-nut like bread in the middle, with almost faint caramel-tawny finish.
I think this is pretty close to what I could call a well-crafted beer without having to overdue the hops, malt or alcohol content of the brew... Faint and somehow, complex.
