From: Binny's, Schaumburg, IL

Glass: Standard US pint glass

An alright marzen, not my favorite for the style, but interesting in some components of taste. I probably won't seek this out again, but am still glad to have tried it, and would be interested to try it fresh.

Pours a voluminous head of dense, off-white foam that coalesces at the top of the glass into a meringue-like structure. The head slowly dissipates over a few minutes to a thin ring of bubbles around the glass. The collapsing of the head results in sheets of lacing along the sides of the glass that are disturbed, but augmented and re-supplied with each sip. Body is a medium tone of golden brown out of the light, golden orange when next to a lamp. Transparent body with fairly vigorous, visible carbonation.

Aroma features bright malt sweetness with slight floral hops. Very mild fruit-like esters. Rather clean and somewhat simple, nothing too exciting, but generally done well.

Taste opens with moderate German and slight caramel malt characteristics that are tempered by slight hop spiciness and slight hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. Mid-palate is distinctly bready, particular wheat bread, and a continued light hop spiciness. Finish continues to be dominated by bread-like and slightly caramel malt flavors. Aftertaste is generically malty and slightly grainy.

Beer is medium-light in body, with mildly aggressive carbonation that creates a bubbly, pillowy, smooth-flowing mouthfeel on the palate. Carbonation initially feels a bit too high, and body is a bit thin for it and the style.

Random find in a grocery store in Seville. Dated 3/27/13 and drank in October '12.

Big effervescent white head erupts and falls down as quick as it came on top of a clear orange/copper colored body.

Caramel, caramel, and a little more caramel. The hops come in a little bit.

Big malty flavor on this with caramel and bread. I love the big caramel aspect of this Märzen.

For the lack of head it is still bubbly and a little thin bodied.

A much needed Märzen white not having one in a couple months and having bunches of lame beers at bars and hostels.

Pours a golden straw color, very clear.

I smell grains and malt with no classic German skunk

A nice crisp lager that tastes like cereal and malt with a slightly bitter finish

Very refreshing moderately carbonated pilsner feel

This was a very enjoyable beer that would go great with some grilled brats.

Will buy again.

It had 5 months until expiration date.
Poured a two finger that faded quickly. Golden color. Faint grain aroma with distant hops. Good carbonation.
Sweet caramel and malty taste followed by a mild bitterness that doesn't linger much. Clean finish. Good drinkability.

A: Pours an amber color with a decent head that fades to bits of lacing.

S: Fairly mild aroma of malt, grain with bit of caramel sweetness and trace of fruit.

T: Taste of malt and grain with a mild caramel sweetness and fruit in the background. Mild bitterness with a fairly clean finish and a lingering stickiness.

F: Medium body and smooth. Seems just a bit bland.

O: Decent drinker that goes down easy. Good for a couple. Needs just a bit more character.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a light amber colour with a decent long lasting head.

Smells of caramel like malts mostly.

Tastes quite nicely malty, some slightly bitter hops too giving the beer a kick.

Overall quite nice and very palatable compared to other Oktoberfest beers i've had.

500ml bottle

A- Light orange/dark golden colour. About 1 and a half finger of dense-looking white head that shows decent retention and leaves nice amounts of lacing in the sides of the glass

S- Fresh whiff of herbal/grassy hops right out of the bottle after opening. Also reveals a maltier, biscuity character after closer inspection, with maybe some light fruity (lemon) notes on the back of things

T- Slightly crisp crackery malts, with maybe some sweeter notes of honey. Lively refreshing but still extremely gentle hoppiness, with distinct fresh grassy notes, along with a more subdued floral feel. A hint of frutiness may be detected on the palate

M- Medium bodied with moderate but still decently mouthfilling carbonation, resulting in what i would describe as a slick but still pleasantly lively feel

O- A straight-forward marzen, it brings exactly what you would expect from a bavarian beer. No surpises here, just an highly refreshing, perfectly balanced beer

Bright orange, fluffy white bubbles come to the edge of the .5L stein. Good depth of grain husk, biscuit, and toasted sour dough. Clean bitterness with just a flash spicy hop flower. An excellent and authentic example. This one could be enjoyed liter after liter.

pours a nice copper gold color. Softer tones of grains, malts, and some caramel flavors. Good fat and fuller feel with caramel and malty flavors on the palate. It’s pretty straightforward and not much nuance. But what it does well, it does it very well. Not the most complex or deep beer, but a very enjoyable one

Pours a clear pale golden orange color with golden yellow edges and a 2.5 finger frothy, pillowy off-white head that very slowly settles into a lasting cap/ring. Large chunks of soapy lacing left behind.

Floral, slightly earthy aroma with grassy hops countered by a sweet malt presence. Hints of grass and straw countered by sweet caramel malt as well as some biscuit and toffee in the nose. Faint light fruit.

Medium bodied with a crisp hop bite up front that gives off a dry, slightly bitter flavor that is nicely balanced by the earthy and sweet malt notes. Slight floral, pine flavor countered by slightly toasted malt, sweet caramel and toffee. Subtle peppery spice in the finish.

Overall this beer isn't terribly complex but it's very nicely balanced and pretty flavorful. The best beer I've had so far from Weltenburg.

This brew pours out as a brownish color with light tan head. There was some light lacing on the glass in the beginning. The smell had a decent malt backbone with some earthy aromas in there as well. The taste of the beer was alright a mild brew for an Oktoberfest. There wasnt much spice in this one. The mouthfeel was smooth and fairly light bodied. Overall it was a decent brew.

A: Brillant clarity with a brassy-lemon peel coloring shows a rapid effervesce moving within. The head builds respectably even with a gentle pour to a creamy 1 finger height and was chalky white in color. Head retention was moderate, mostly lasting throughout the drink always leaving you with a thin skim coating ontop, while the lacing was short and weak on the visual appeal.

S: Fairly clean aroma, fresh grass with lightly toasted cereal and sweet grains (Vienna). Some fresh whole noble hop cones tread lightly on the nose with some dry forest tones. Overall very soft in delivery.

T: Sweet toasty caramel grains with some fresh grassy hopping. Honey malt and buttered caramel toast finishes sweet and slick off the tongue with a soft touch of flowers. Very clean, with an old world flavor.

M: Good amount of carbonation is detected with a slick, slippery and medium-heavy like texture of malts on the tongue.

D/O: Easy drinkability and moderate alcohol content of 5.5% should make this go down easy enough, true to style. Overall not what most people would pick up on as a octoberfest beer at first, again, an old world style and feel. The body is a brassy-lemon color and not marzen and the grain base seems more Vienna sweet then munich dry toasted, similar to a fest bier by Victory. Cleanly brewed and a great beer for the extreme hot weather or try to sneak on to your BMC drinking friends. Clean and well crafted for the German beer enthusiasts , yet no reason why a BMC drinker would shun this. Again this is not your Americanized bastardized octoberfest bier loaded with speciality grains and hops, rather a true old world german style beer that is geared towards session drinking and sharing good times with friends.

Rich, malty, spicy, smoky. Color is light brown/amber. Smells of prune, earth, and malt. Rich texture - grainy, leathery, nutty. The aftertaste is a bit sickly sweet, and there is a burnt caramel/marshmallow taste in the background. So, not great, but good of you're in the mood for what this has to offer. Lots of flavor, but the character is a bit off.

Bottle from State Line. To say I've been impressed with other beers from this brewery would be an understatement.

Pouring a clear light amber with a beautiful beige head, dense and creamy, with excellent retention and lacing, this is a gorgeous marzen. The nose is great too. Rich, bready, mildly fruity and with a nice melanoidin character, this is great. A nice showcase for Munich malt, there's a nice brightness as well, with floral honey to go with the golden raisins, fresh bread and toasted grains. The hops aren't really noticeable on the nose, I guess this might not be the freshest sample.

The palate opens silky smooth with the classic Munich malt flavors of bread, toasted grains and a mild honey-like sweetness. A firm hop bitterness is also present, tempering the sweetness. Not as fruity as the nose would suggest, there still is some mild raisin character though. Drying and moderately bitter on the finish, the grainy flavors fade rather quickly, making this feel just a touch watery. Medium-light in body with moderate carbonation, this is excellent on the palate, apart from the mildly disappointing finish. A great beer.

appearance; clear orange-amber. Sticky white head, nice retention and stratus cloud-like lacing.

smell; dry, dusty malts. Very clean, with faint tea-like hops. Some deeper caramel malts that remain discreetly in the backround.

taste; malty but more biscuty than sweet. Herbal and grassy hops. Bready in the aftertaste with just a bit of hop bitters.

mouthfeel; very light, crisp, and refreshing. Gentle, fine carbonation and a smooth finish. Very pleasant and drinkable.

overall; a simplistic masterpiece, highly reccomended and true to the style.

Poured from 500mL bottle into a pilsner glass.

Appearance: rich golden hue with a clear body and good effervescence. Head is two thick fingers of creamy foam leaving a good lace as it dissipates.

Smell: sweet, but not too sweet, caramelly malt with just a whiff of earthy hops. I like it quite a lot, actually.

Taste: lightly sweet with a bit of caramel. Hops are not quite as active in the flavor as in the aroma, but overall I think this is a very tasty beer.

Mouthfeel: body is on the lighter side of medium but the beer seems rather aggressively carbonated, which yields a pretty solid creaminess. Good stuff.

Drinkability: I'm finding this beer quite drinkable. It's certainly good after working out side for a little while, but I'm betting it's pretty good in other contexts, too.

Grabbed this on a recent visit to Whidbey Beer Works. Poured into straight pint glass. Poured a clear, light honey/amber color with just under an inch of slightly off-white head that decent retention and OK lacing.

The aroma was malty sweet, caramel, and had a nice hop zing with a slight yeast funkiness. The caramel was more noticeable on the tongue, along with that bit of hop tang, and a kind of odd finish.

The body was decent, smooth and easy, but a little bit sticky-sweet. Drinkability was good, I had the whole 17oz bottle without even trying.

Overall, a very nice beer. Pick up a bottle if you see it in the store.

Bottle into bicentennial Mason jar.

A: Nice coppery hazy body with bits of funk suspended throughout. 2 finger ecru head that stick around pretty well. Some lacing here and there.

S: Caramelly maltiness. Bit of spicy hops with a bit of grape in the background.

T: Nice toasty grainy malt balanced with floral almost grapey hops. Ends with a bit of herbal dryness. This one grows on you as it shrinks in your jar.

M: A bit on the light side but good for this style.

D: Very drinkable. I wish I have about 16 more. Gains character as she warms in your glass. A good beer. God bless dem monks.
