I'd say that I've been to over 50 brewpubs in over 25 states and this Lucky Lab ranks as one of my favorites. There's just something about it.
Beer: Plum great beer. Nothing wildly creative or mind-blowing, but entirely solid selection that runs the gamut from dark and malty to bright and hoppy. And a cask! I've only been a few times on my rare trips to P-town, but it's become a must and I've never had a bad pint.
Food: Above par pub grub. Solid burgers and they even offer relatively lighter fare like rice bowls (don't know why they call 'em "bento" when it's not.) And way fair prices.
Atmosphere: Here's where they rack up the most pints. Spacious and relaxed inside with room for small and large groups, and always a great vibe outside where dogs are allowed to run free to play, sniff, drink from bowls. If you're a dog lover , this is THE place to go. They also have lots of games to play from Battleship to Scrabble, so it's easy to kill several hours here with a bite and some pints. And the clientele are friendly as hell.
Final: On my way out last time, I asked about to-go sales. I was pleased to discover that they'll fill a 22-oz bottle of anything on tap (except the organic ales and the cask conditioned), for just a quarter more than the price of a pint!
Great beer. Good food. Great dogs. Great staff. Great vibe. Wish this was my local brewpub.

This place is damn near perfect. Granted, they have more space than most, but they use it well- large open inside seating area with a huge windowed wall where you can observe the goings-on in the dog-run. Beer selection and quality is great- who needs guest taps when the house beer is so good and offers so many choices?? Most of the Lucky Lab beers I sampled were well above average; some of the best in Portland I could find. Standouts were the Pavlovs Imperial Stout, SuperDog IPA and a cask stout that was really nice. The food here was decent brewpub fare and priced reasonably, no complaints. Service was fast (both food and bar) and bartenders seemed knowledgeable of the products and only slightly apathetic. Would highly recommend+Great value!

This one of my favorite spots in town. Whenever I have company and want to take them to a very "Portland" kind of place, the Lab is definitely on the agenda.
The interior has a cozier exterior than what you might expect from an old sheetmetal warehouse. Very open and airy, but exposed wood beams and well-worn wood flooring keep things warm and inviting. Big chalkboards have the food and tap menu, which usually a guest tap or 2, a nitro tap, a cask selection and a bunch of house ales. The variety of house ales will typically include stouts, pale ales, IPAs, alts and others, including the delicious Super Dog IPA. Overall, they have a really nice beer selection. An open window in a corner gives you a peek at the small brewing operation. There are a few corkboards where people tack up photos of themselves from around the globe sporting Lucky Lab tees (including a couple from yours truly).
The exterior seating area is the old loading dock, and is the place to hang if you're a dog owner or lover. It's covered and 1/2 is heated with overhead heaters, so any time of year is a good time to take your pooch for a beer. The well-behaved pups run around leash-free, and it's a very social atmosphere for man and canine out there. Homegrown hops on growing on trellises outside are a nice touch. There's a small parking lot out back, and free street parking all around.
If hanging with the pups isn't your thing, head back inside where the extracurricular activities include darts, board games, and a piano I've seen played a few times.
The food menu is mostly cold sandwiches, with a couple of reliably tasty soups and a curry chicken skewer bowl. The sandwiches are pretty pedestrian, but not bad at all. For the most part, the food is decent, but nothing to get excited about. Not a big deal to me, though, as I come for a couple of cold ones, hang out with the dog and my wife or friends.
Service at the bar is quick and friendly. If you order food, you'll be given a little stand with a number and someone will bring your food to you when it's ready.
Prices are more than reasonable by my standards: 4 bucks and change for an imperial pint of great local ale and 7-8 bucks for a sandwich and chips.
If you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend checking this place out.

One of the icons of the micro brew pubs in Portland, been around for a while now. The dining area is showing some wear but, it is waht you expect from a brewpub in the lower Hawthorne district of Portland.
All of their beers are good, don't know of one I wouldn't have again, especially like the Triple Threat IPA and Hawthorne Bitter.
Food is good if you like deli style sandwichs or bento, priced well and made to order.
Not much service other than taken orders and pouring perfect pints for their customers.
If you live in PDX or visit this is a must for all beer lovers...oh and in the summer the back deck is an awesome place to hang and have some pints with friends.

This place is a true Portland brewpub...lately a lot of pubs around Portland have been trying to clean up their places and make them have like a modern squeaky clean/stuffy type of an atmosphere...thats cool but to me Portland is a very laid back almost grungy type of a town. This is as laid back and grungy as they come and I love it!! This brewpub is a very large place, lots of tables indoor and outside as well. Dogs are welcome and everytime ive been here there have been many dogs outside in the beer garden. Last time I was there the bartender looked like he was the guitar player for Slayer or Megadeth or something...I think thats a prerequesite for working here maybe. I've never eaten at this place, but their beers are top notch. For a true Portland experience go check out Lucky lab...unless you are somebody that likes to get all dressed up to go to a brewpub, then you may not like it.

This is really a great place to ber a great brew and hang with your dog. When they opened, (way back when), they were one of the first small brewpubs that I have been to. I have to say that the Lucky Lab helped me to see the "beer" light.
This is one of Portland's great brew pubs. I have enjoyed going the Lucky Lab on Hawthorn Blvd. For many years. I have since moved to Pendleton out in the Eastern Oregon desert. I hope to go back again.
The Lucky Lab is a really fun place with some GREAT beers. If you get the chance be sure to stop in and "Pick up some beer, maybe a couple as long as your there." Bring a couple of growlers.

The indoor space has a cool, converted industrial feel with high ceilings, brick, exposed utilities. They have an impresive selection of beers, including nitro and cask options (and hard cider). I was with a group who passed their selections around to taste and they were all high quality beers. Go out through the back doors to a large covered patio area where dogs are welcome to sit beside the tables with their owners. Outside seating (and inside I think) is mostly at picnic tables.
The food service is order at the bar - they give you a number and bring it out when ready. The food was good but not exciting.

Reviewing the Lab in NW. This place rocks! Beer quality and selection is overall very good. Food is great, provided you understand you're limited to cold sandwiches and pizza. But you a task for much more than good pizza and beer. Atmosphere is very casual. A place you won't have problems coming to if you haven't showed in a while. Music is great. Not so loud that you have to shout. Just loud enough to enjoy. X was rocking when I walked in. Great dog environment. Patio is great when the weather permits. I passed up several brew pubs on my long walk here. BTW, this review would Sl apply to the SW Lab, sans the comments on the pizza. I LOVE THE LAB!!!!

It's a tough call to make, but this is probably my favorite brewpub in Portland. The pub has a very comfortable, informal vibe to it, with rickety chairs and tables in a large spacious hall. The beers here at the Lucky Lab are uniformly excellent and solid, with my favorite the ultra hoppy "Got hops?" Superdog is also pretty good, as is pretty much everything else. Pints are fairly inexpensive to begin with, but if you drop by on Monday's (miser Monday's) I believe the price drops by a dollar off the price of a pint. The food here is nothing fancy, but the salads, soups and sandwiches are all solid and reasonably priced. Service is fine for what it is. You order your food (and beer) at the bar, they give you a number and a waitress brings by your food soon after.
The brewpub has a nice spacious outside beer garden in the back near the parking lot, which allows the pub to accommodate customers who have brought along "mans best friend" for an outing. There is water available for the bowser, and in theory I think this a very nice idea. However, there are frequently quite a few dogs outside, and altercations among canine companions are not infrequent (mostly just consisting of loud barking, but also an occasional fight). Consequently, no matter how nice the weather, I generally stay inside with my beer.
This is a very nice brewpub with very good beer. Highly recommended.

Cool atmosphere at the Lucky Lab. I hadn't been there in 7 years. It is still the same. I like the large beer hall feel to it. The quality of the beer was solid. I tried four different beers while I was there and they were definitely ones to write home about. Didn't have any issues with the service and they were friendly. They had a great selection of beers as well as food choices even all I had was the peanuts which is always a nice addition to any establishment. Prices seemed to be in line with other joints I have visited. I would definitely recommend this one to anyone visiting Portland.
