2006 bottle. A great extra received in a trade with mykie73. Thanks! Consumed on 12/13/2009 and poured into a snifter. The beer appears dark orange with a slight red tinge and a large off white head that lingers for quite some time.

The nose is of caramel, light toffee, citrus, and pine. There's a dash of oxidation. The hops have held up nicely. Their powerful presence is a bit surprising.

The taste is of caramel, with a moderate pine bitterness. Earthy notes are evident. The beer has aged very well. A dash of alcohol is noticeable. The finish is caramel with pine and citrus hops. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a low moderate level of carbonation. Great stuff!

Had a vertical tasting of the 03 and 04 on draft, 4 oz. each - could have had 40! At the lucky lab barelywine fest, this was a top contender in a very deep field.
Old Yellar poured a deep, murky, bronzed amber, with a thin, off-white head that left a little sticky lace.
The aroma was strong and rich, specialty malts and slightly sour fruit.
The taste is great, deep and complex. The speciality malts from the nose are but taste sweeter, which I loved. The fruit is there as well, sour cherries maybe. The sweetness is really enjoyable and not cloying at all, and there is only a hint of bitterness, and less alcohol, at the finish . The older of the two is of course smoother and sweeter, almost reminiscent of bubble gum or cotton candy.
The mouthfeel was surprisingly light in spite of it's richness, really awesome.
This is one of the most drinkable barelywines I've had. The taste was very rich but the clean finish would not build up and obliterate the palate if you drank a few, although I unfortunately did not get the opportunity to do so...

Nice to see the Lab venturing into the realm of big beers, especially with this effort yielding such a successful result. Old Yeller is deep ruby-brown with a luscious smell that speaks of plum puree, dried apricot, and cherry syrup. It is served in a stemmed wine glass a bit too cold, but if Lucky Lab has the decency to age their barleywine for two years, the least I can do is wait ten minutes for the brew to reach optimal serving temperatures.

The taste retains a substantial bittering element after two years; they must have started with a mountain of hops. The alcohol is placed forward and forms the central tine in the trident of alcohol; bold fruited malts; and sustained bittering. The resultant balance is luxurious and complex, all the moreso as the brew achieves its full expression after some judicious warming.

A hearty ale of comfortable elegance. Leaves sugar at the lip and warmth in the belly.

Big surprise of the Barleywine Long Haul 2005. Vintage 2003. I expect some hits and some misses from Lucky, but this was absurdly good. Completely unique and without peer.

The body of the ale sits a very deep mahogany with nearly the same solidity. Hints of ruby light cling to the edges, as does a faint rimming of foam. Surprisingly, the lacing is quite nice.

The aroma is a bit of a shock. Its a caramel, chocolate liqueur and just a slightest hint of fruit like real raspberry. If there was any indication of its alcoholic content, it was subliminal from the chocolate liqueur smells, otherwise its absent.

The taste a multi-course session in flavors. Much of the same caramel malt, chocolate and fruit carry well into the palette. But later in the sip is a honey sweetness and mild nuttiness that is reminiscent of baklava.

The body of this ale is thick as tar but drinks very well. Many of the other samples would not transition into a full glass, though I readily ordered a glass following tasters and was exceedingly satisfied.

I'm not sure where this came from but its a jewel of an ale. It might be that beer you convince non-beer drinkers to try and they may just enjoy it. And make sure you lift to the brewer who birthed this wonderful beer.
