Completely absorbant opaque black hue. Well retained mud brown head leaves Belgian lace. Bittersweet dark chocolate, and sharp, carbonaceous roasted barley dominate the aroma, with secondary support from butterscotch diacetyl and nutty carob. Trace dryish date esters and heaty alcohol surface with a swirl. Quite appetizing in aroma. Prune laced sweetness initially in flavor is superceded by a melange of assertive burnt barley and citrus tinged hop bitterness. Chocolate malt presence melds with mellow, treacle undertones to lend an earthy, semisweet, raw cacao impression mid palate. Moderate in body, with a quasi dry, well attenuated mouthfeel. Finishes with a snap of roasted barley sharpness yielding to lingering deep, yet agreeable molasses sweetness. Tsunami stout has tremendous chocolate and roasted grain character, yet retains an elegant dryness. Delicious, satiating and quaffable.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a St. Bernardus goblet. Bottled 22 August 2012.

A: Finger of mocha head. Black, opaque body. Heavy lacing.

S: Smells like a porter. Roasted sweet malts, hint of vanilla.

T: It's pretty good, until the finish, which is phenomenal. The maintaste is sweet chocolate, lightly roasted malt, and only a hint of bitterness. The endtaste is rich and expressive, with dark cocoa powder and cappuccino. A touch of hops on the aftertaste. It only gets a 4.0 because the majority of the flavor is mediocre.

M: Rich, smooth, and sweet.

O: Great finish, short on delivery. Recommended, but not worth going out of your way. Would maybe have again.

Shared by ottovon and whiterascal, poured into a Russian River glass.

Ebony as a piano key, but kind of thin-looking. Any color besides black only emerges when the glass is right next to a light bulb. Above, one finger of fuzzy, cinnamon-colored head becomes a wispy ring. Below, some yeast chunks settle at the bottom of the glass.

Chocolatey nose, full of tangy dark and crumbly cocoa nibs. Bitter coffee and some earthy hops are also noticeable.

Very earthy flavor. I get touches of toasted sourdough, cocoa nibs, chocolate syrup and light roast coffee. Deeper down, I find hints of raisin and other dark fruits. Altogether it’s very roasty/bitter, though some sweetness rolls in at the swallow. A smooth blend of flavors with lingering cocoa bitterness.

The thinness perceived in the flavor is apparent in the mouthfeel — the body’s a thin, soft medium-light. Gentle, tingly carbonation fizzes the brew softly. Feels silky and light on the palate. Touches of heat in the nose and numbness in the tongue.

Tsunami Stout isn’t a giant wave of flavor, but rather a smooth, rolling tide delivering good amounts of fruit and a lot of chocolate, both of which I like. It may be a bit thin, but it’s a quality foreign export.

Picked up a bomber to go after dining at the pub back in early August for $6.00.

Beer poured black as night with a thick brown head that is long lasting.

Nose is dark bitter chocolate and roasted malts.

Taste is chocolate infused roasted malts finishing with a nice dry bitter hop.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and quite smooth.

Drinkability is very good. This beer has all the characteristics of an RIS but the alcohol is nowhere to be found. This is one of the better extra stouts i have had this year!

A - Solid black with a thin tan head and spotty lacing.

S - Heavily roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate and coffee.

The stream from the bottle is a cola brown that turns into black in the glass. The head is a nice size, dense, a good medium tan that lasts as a fuzzy film and laces nicely. The aroma is almost spot on. Great coffee and chocolate nose with the java being dominant. Hops are present in the aroma, but more so in the flavor. The flavor doesn't quite live up to the aromas promise being a little overwhelmed by the hops. Still an excellent stout.

I lugged this one all the way across the country with me from Portland and resisted it sitting in my fridge until tonight. Beautiful, dark dark dark color. Pours fairly thick with minimal head. Malty, coffeeish aroma. Beautiful taste, a WHOLE lot of malt, some coffee, a faint hint of chocolate and chicory. Dry mouthfeel, but not too dry. Semi-sweet aftertaste. This is a wonderful beer from one of my favorite breweries in the world. Darren does a great job out on the coast, I wish I weren't 3000 miles away now.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a Sam Smith pint glass. Pours jet black with tan foam. Thick creamy head that hangs around for a long time. Very well presented.

Aromatic. Rich roasted malts. Coffee hints.

Taste is deep and rich. Some hints of chocolate. Roasted. An overriding hop prescence throughout. Tasty, complex.

Enjoyable to taste, but honestly 22 oz was a lot to put down. The taste was very rich, the hop was present throughout. This one's a sipper. Schedule some time to work through it. Its worth it, but not something you can do quickly.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into my Pelican pint glass.

Coffee-colored liquid with faint rust highlights towards the edges of the glass...otherwise, opaque. Three fingers of sandy brown, creamy, springy, supernatant foam - receding to a small but thick layer with lacing that reminds me of a sugar cone mold or a pie crust...dropping back onto the surface like sand surrounded by sea-foam (legs).

Light toffee, coffee dipped toast, chocolate, licorice, and brown sugar aromatics. Roasted malt and hints of dried persimmon.

Roast chocolate malt, coffee, green cocoa beans, and a lime-like hop note on the palate. Creamy, sweet, lightly fruity, bitter, with an almost tangy roasty finish and hints of walnuts. Everything in its place. Spot on for style, clearly made with high quality ingredients and care. No off flavors at all.

Body is a little bit light, though the carbonation is just right. Not much warmth from the alcohol, it is very well disguised.

Surprisingly subtle and straight-forward - the name had me expecting a big Imperial leviathan rather than a polite slow session beer.

Pours black with maroon highlights and a thick, dark, ecru head that leaves traces of lace.
Aroma of roasted coffee, chocolate, caramel and some nuttiness.
Flavors of sweet chocolate, lightly bittered, roasted coffee and some smooth, buttery and biscuit notes.
Mouthfeel is full-bodied sweetness and light roasted and bitter notes. Smooth and creamy.
Drinkability is very high. Classic progressions of a sweet stout. solid representation of style and very nice flavoring.

This beer poured very dark, almost black and formed a huge dark tan foam head that left lots of nice circular lace around the glass as it subsided. An aroma of malt, coffee and chocolate with some toasted/roasted elements. A flavor of malt, coffee and chocolate. A very interesting sweetness is present in the finish, yet a touch of bitterness. Almost like bittersweet chocolate. A very good stout.

Appearance. Pours a deep brown, almost black with a thin light brown head that leaves a little lace.

Smell. Not strong on smell but some roasty coffee and toasty grains with a hint of citrus.

Taste. Roasty grains and molasses. Some chocolate a and a little bitter hops in the middle with roasty coffee in the end.

Mouthfeel. A little heavier than medium body with medium-low carbonation. Some warm alcohol.

Overall. Big roasty stout. Good stuff.

Enjoyed at brewpub on 9/3/12

A: This pours out pitch black. There is no light getting through from what I can see. There is a medium color tan head. It leaves some light lacing sheeting.

S: I pull some good roast on the nose. I get hints of dark chocolate, roast coffee.

T: For the flavor, bitter dark chocolate on tip of tongue. It's not overly aggressive. Then you get some of that roast coffee meshing in nicely towards the middle. Nice malt bill to pull it all together.

M: Being an export stout, not as big. It's medium leading to full bodied, B to B+

Appearance: Pours a very attractive dark brown to black with a 1.5 finger dirty khaki crown that shows good retention and lace.

Smell: A bit of acidic soap up front with lightly roasty malt, bitter dark chocolate, and a light espresso rounding it out.

Taste: Same as nose with a touch of black currant.

Mouthfeel: A bit chewy for a medium bodied brew with good carbonation.

Drinkability: Fairly drinkable but not much going on in the flavor dept.

Pours a very dark burgundy color with one finger of tan head.

Scent of chocolate, smoke, bacon, molasses, maple syrup and oatmeal. Fairly complex, but not overly so, balanced well too.

Taste of chocolate, smoke, earth, molasses, oak, and some bourbon. After a few months, this has developed a nice subtle smokey flavor.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a biting carbonation, good, but a bit too strong for a Stout.

Thanks to Shane(beachbum1975) for sharing this brew.

A: Pours pitch black, no light. Decent head on the pour but with little retention. Not much lacing.

S: Light roasted malts with a light hint of lactose. Some sweet notes of vanilla. Some chocolate comes out as it warms.

T/M: Nice light roasted malts and creamy chocolate. Again, just a bit of lactose, adds an interesting twist. The chocolate gets bitter in the finish adding even more depth. Some added sweetness from what I think is some vanilla. Body is medium full with a creamy feel.

D: Not a huge stout but tasty and very interesting. Drinks pretty easy.

My girlfriend visited Pacific City and stopped in at the brew pub and asked if I wanted anything, I requested something heavy and dark.

A: Black, tan head, completely opaque almost no light penetrates this beer. it is very very dark and looks the part quite well!

S: The first hint is of sweet chocolate, almost syrupy, coffee and a faint clean hint of hops hit later on in the smell. A very delicious smelling stout.

T: Initially the chocolate hits very hard, but the bitter tastes of coffee and a slightly clean hoppiness really stand out towards the end. The finish is nice with a lingering hop and coffee bitterness. Does feel a little watered down though.

M: Quite thick but not quite as much as an imperial stout, its is filling and even a bit warming in the mouth. Not a bad stout at all for thickness, like I mentioned before a little watered down.

D: A very drinkable heavy, reasonably high alcohol beer. The beer overall is balanced quite nicely, and a few bombers would be great to have, especially on a cold day. A little out of season, but it went well with today.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Tsunami Stout pours a strong coffee and molasses color, with only a few rays sneaking through the cusp when held up to the light. A modest tan head provides a nice finish to a solid looking beer.

Smell: Strong mocha aroma, with hazelnut and light coffee notes along for the ride.

Taste: Bitter chocolate and a touch of espresso dominate the dark, roasted malt. Coffee infused hops finish out the robust taste.

Mouthfeel: A little bit creamy, but still with a fair amount of carbonation. The carbonation endures from the pour to the last sip. Despite the strong taste, it has a balanced feel on the tongue, leaving just a light coffee bitterness at the end.

Drinkability: A beer I could definitely enjoy as a slow sipper for one or two, maybe less of a session beer. The robust but simple flavor would cease to interest me after a few.

22oz bottled February 2012. Served at cellar temperature.

Pours black with a three finger brown head that leaves some sheets of lacing and holds a nice thick cap.

Aroma is musty cardboard, hints of cocoa, dark fruit, and roasted malt. Moderate strength.

Flavor is roasted malts, some chocolate, a bit of coffee and dark fruit, cardboard, mineral notes, minimal alcohol.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, creamy, soft carbonation.

This beer wants to be good, but is falling short with some apparent oxidation issues. Flavor is OK...aroma is not...

Pitch black with a light brown head, Tsunami Stout has a strong aroma of roasted malts. It has a very glassy mouthfeel -- almost chewy -- with a smooth taste without any bitter flavors.

This is a very good smooth stout without any bitter bite.

Mad props go out to cmaruschak for the chance to sample this West Coast goodie.

Appearance: Midnight darkness descends into this glass leaving a nice tan head. No visible carbonation and no light getting through this bad boy. It's black from the body to the edge. Pretty impressive.

Smell: One of the best smelling beers I've had in a while. A garden party for the nose! Sweet dark fruits, raisins, roasted coffee, heavy whipping cream, chocolate syrup, and dry cocoa all stimulate the senses. Perfection in a glass.

Taste: Hot chocolate powder, roasted malts amped up, coffee, and chocolate syrup all coat the palate with a wonderful yet understated hop bitterness at the end. Just a lovely roasty, chocolate profile.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, creamy, and light carbonation that keeps it interesting.

Drinkability: Hook me up to the IV. This is great. Wonderful tasting, not too heavy handed. Very well done. Strongly recommended.

This is perfect appearance for a stout. It's as black as black can be. It has a thick head of creamy, fluffy, brown foam. So thick that it tried to escape the top of the glass, in a vertical manner. The head takes a long while to recede to a nice thick surface covering, over an 1/8th of an inch thick. The lacing is almost like curtains.
Visually, this is quite an impressive beer.

The nose is not perfect, but it's still very good. Big notes of maltiness, filled with dark roasted coffee notes. A wonderful lacto sweetness. Light hints of milk chocolate, vanilla and cocoa powder. A lightly earthy, almost woody quality lies over the whole thing.

A great big presence of roastiness dominates this one. Some mild lacto sweetness with a touch of vanilla caramels. Notes of dark chocolate-covered espresso roast coffee beans. A very light spicey kiss of hops helps this finish nicely dry.

Full-bodied. Very smooth, goes down easy, with a medium level of creaminess. Carbonation level may be just a touch too much, but it's still quite tasty.

This is a great example of what a good stout should be. It's deliciously smooth and easy drinking. The abv is very well hidden, also.
This is my first offering from Pelican and I want more.

[Suggested Glassware: Nonic Pint]

The pour was a pitch jet black with an average (1-2 finger) light cocoa brown rocky head that was mostly diminishing, down to a thin film and small collar with poor runny lacing.

The aroma was very robust of a burnt biscuit mat, light resin hops and a strong earthy yeast with notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, molasses, vanilla, a mild smokiness and a slight alcohol tinge.

The taste was bitter sweet with a nice malty feel and had notes of bitter chocolate and molasses from the beginning, progressing slightly into a purely bitter taste with a huge coffee presence and a mild smoky finish. The flavor lasted a very long time after the swallow with a bold smooth bitter coffee taste left to linger for quit a while.

Mouthfeel was full in body with a dry, oily texture and a solid medium carbonation.

Overall this was a boldly robust brew with a strong bitter mocha / coffee taste that is offset slightly by a mild sweetness, and was done very well may I say. Making this a very enjoyable tasty brew with a superb drinkability...

Poured from a bomber, bottled 112612.

Appearance: A very massive, cascading head that has halfway brown color (not too light, not too dark). Body is a dark brown color and the retention is excellent.

Smell: Cocoa, raisins, alcohol-soaked nuts, wisps of coffee beans. Shy, not an overt aroma.

Taste: Smooth coffee at first, ground coffee beans, an alcoholic nut flavor, mild raisins and ends with a very bitter-sweet chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth texture, low carbonation, midway there's a roasted bitterness.

Overall: The finish is quite intense, like a very strong & bitter coffee. Not top shelf but pretty good for me.

22oz w/ "10" handwritten on cap, I think October 2011. Into a snifter. Pours a nice deep black w/ a thick crackly mocha head that settles pretty quickly to a thin film.

Aroma is dark, bitter roasted malt and rich chocolate. Some dark fruits too.

Taste is highly bitter and roasty, but somehow also dry and drinkable.

Mouthfeel is smooth and dry. Vanishes off the palate, leaving just a slight bitter aftertaste.

Overall a really solid, if not especially complex, stout from Pelican. Closest I think I've come to a "session stout."
