s: at first sniff the aroma is rich, but maintains a smooth balance of chocolate, roast, burnt sugars, and an earthy, grassy hop aroma

m: carbonation light to moderate, medium-full in body

t: dark chocolate and burnt sugars on the tongue, rich and creamy with sweet roasted flavors, hops earthy with a touch of grass, moderately bitter with long lingering roasts, flavorful and supremely balanced

o: a very well-brewed little stout, lots of character and everything seems to work towards the whole, drinks easily

Bottled 8/22/12.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and slight coffee. Taste is much the same with cocoa and cookie dough flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Poured from a bomber, bottled 112612.

Appearance: A very massive, cascading head that has halfway brown color (not too light, not too dark). Body is a dark brown color and the retention is excellent.

Smell: Cocoa, raisins, alcohol-soaked nuts, wisps of coffee beans. Shy, not an overt aroma.

Taste: Smooth coffee at first, ground coffee beans, an alcoholic nut flavor, mild raisins and ends with a very bitter-sweet chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth texture, low carbonation, midway there's a roasted bitterness.

Overall: The finish is quite intense, like a very strong & bitter coffee. Not top shelf but pretty good for me.

The colour a stout should be. Completely opaque. Beautiful middling brown head. Pillowy and resilient.

I can smell... raosty barley and some hops. Combine to take it in a direction I can't quite describe, but suffice to say it smells good.

There's that roast again. Coffee beans, not ground or brewed, with some dark cocoa and a little bit of bitterness to finish. Great balance. Great brew.

Smoothe across the tongue, damn this is a solid example of a stout.

Presentation: Very cool but simple label with the Pelican on the front. Back gives info on brewery and info on the beer itself. Painted on!

Appearance: Poured from a 22oz bomber into a 16oz English Pint. Poured out jet black with an airy 2 finger dark brown head. Head retention was 2min16sec before dissipating to a thin foam coating then ring.

Smell/Aroma: Smells of deep roast right off the bat. Milk chocolate and dark roast coffee aromas are very prevalent. Slight hints of molasses and dark fruits can also be detected.

Flavor/Taste: Tastes milk chocolate and dark roasted coffee. Hints of toasty toffee and caramel sweetness are detectable. A charred burnt flavor is tasted throughout. Roast if very prevalent. Alcohol is masked very well.

MouthFeel: Medium bodied with a medium carbonation and creamy mouthfeel.

Drinkability: Very drinkable and not very filling at all.

Overall/Comments: Excellent beer. Very well balance. Complex flavor and aroma profile help mask the alcohol content and compliment each other nicely. Classified as a Foreign/Export Stout at 7% ABV. Consumed on 10/9/2012

A: pours deep black with a light tan head that is only about a quarter of an inch and fades somewhat slowly
S: smells of roasted barley, bitter dark chocolate, coffee and a slight dark fruit smell
T: roasted barley comes in droves across the palate with some bakers chocolate flavor and a hint of coffee. a bit grainy but not bad. swallow brings a bit of black malt and burnt sugar with some coffee and chocolate
M: thick and nearly chewy with adequate carb that is fairly soft on the palate
O: a very solid and flavorful beer. I can understand why it's a friend of mine's favorites. definitely an excellent example of the style and sure to please.

[Suggested Glassware: Nonic Pint]

The pour was a pitch jet black with an average (1-2 finger) light cocoa brown rocky head that was mostly diminishing, down to a thin film and small collar with poor runny lacing.

The aroma was very robust of a burnt biscuit mat, light resin hops and a strong earthy yeast with notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, molasses, vanilla, a mild smokiness and a slight alcohol tinge.

The taste was bitter sweet with a nice malty feel and had notes of bitter chocolate and molasses from the beginning, progressing slightly into a purely bitter taste with a huge coffee presence and a mild smoky finish. The flavor lasted a very long time after the swallow with a bold smooth bitter coffee taste left to linger for quit a while.

Mouthfeel was full in body with a dry, oily texture and a solid medium carbonation.

Overall this was a boldly robust brew with a strong bitter mocha / coffee taste that is offset slightly by a mild sweetness, and was done very well may I say. Making this a very enjoyable tasty brew with a superb drinkability...

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.

Appearance: completely black with some dim brown highlights around the edges. Head poured three thick fingers of pillowy dark tan foam which is dissipating very slowly. There is also a nice chunky lace left on the glass. A very attractive brew.

Smell: roasted grains and chocolate malt predominate, but there's also a yeasty creaminess underneath. Some of the roastiness comes through a bit harsh, but overall it's quite good.

Taste: roasty and chocolatey with a surprisingly sweet fruitiness. Classic export-stout fruity character (cherry, raspberry, blackberry) balances well with the roast. Smooth and enticing.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a very smooth, silky creaminess. I like it.

Overall: a very good export stout. I like the fruit character of the flavor and its overall drinkability. Would definitely have again.

App- Deep dark brown pour into the glass with a great color shade and density in the center. A nice tan head that was about 1-1/2 fingers deep and tightly wound. A good amount of cling and lace to it.

Smell- It was a small aromatic stout. A bit like an amped up Guinness Export. Grainy, cracker, hoppy and a tinge of malt. Little bit of chocolate behind it. Wasnt much there really. Even when warmed hard to pick them out.

Taste- I thought it was a pretty good stout. It was a bit different to me to have that more grainy hoppy stout with the export, because well I drink more RIS and DRIS. So with the grainy came a bit of earthiness and a bit of graham cracker. A bit hoppy and dry.

Mouth- Its a bit of a mix of layers on the body. A little light. A little medium depends on each sip. Not really a solid state throughout. The carbonation was a bit too prickly. It had residual malty and earthy hops.

Drink- It was okay. Well it was better than that, but think I am being critical over the graininess and because I like smooth RIS and DRIS. Id probably have this again.

A: Jet black with slight caramel head that keeps with a ring around the rim. Head retention is very minimal.

S: It has a forefront of roasted grains followed up with a medium amount of fruitiness and an overall sweetness to round it out. A slight alcohol aroma is also detected.

T: Low-moderate fruity esters, sharp/assertive (burnt) roasted grain character, and sharp bitterness. Decent finish, but carbonation adds additional bitterness.

M: Medium-heavy mouthfeel, Carbonation is on the high level, adding some additional bitterness.

O: If carbonation were less it would really allow for the roasted grain flavor to carry through and finish off with a nice smooth flavor instead of a sharp bitterness.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a St. Bernardus goblet. Bottled 22 August 2012.

A: Finger of mocha head. Black, opaque body. Heavy lacing.

S: Smells like a porter. Roasted sweet malts, hint of vanilla.

T: It's pretty good, until the finish, which is phenomenal. The maintaste is sweet chocolate, lightly roasted malt, and only a hint of bitterness. The endtaste is rich and expressive, with dark cocoa powder and cappuccino. A touch of hops on the aftertaste. It only gets a 4.0 because the majority of the flavor is mediocre.

M: Rich, smooth, and sweet.

O: Great finish, short on delivery. Recommended, but not worth going out of your way. Would maybe have again.

22oz bottle into SN tulip pint glass.

A: Pours a very thick near black color beneath a dense and foamy dark brown head. Fluffy dense head faded into a very thick layer that stuck around through the whole beer and left deep streaks of lace down the sides of the glass.
S: Rich and roasted smelling with notes of bitter chocolate and roasted grains. Hints of coffee as well.
T: Deep notes of dark chocolate followed by anise, peat, hints of dark fruits, and roasted malts. Finish is roasted and slightly nutty. Bitter coffee and more chocolate in the aftertaste. Smoky just smoked a cigar aftertaste (good thing) long after the swallow.
M: Very rich and creamy mouthfeel with a thicker body than I was expecting for the style. Carbonation is fluffy and everything goes down very smoothly.
O: One of the best foreign stouts I’ve had. Knocks the socks off of Guinness. Check it out if you get a chance.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Reviewed live.

A- One finger light brown head. Decent retention, thick wall of lacing. Black and opaque. Wish it had a better head, but alas.

S- Dry stout, creamy, chocolaty and medium bodied malts. Smells like a Guinness with a higher alcohol content. Very dry smell, toffee and coffee in the mix.

T- Robust roast malts, some alcohol taste that kicks in at the end. Finishes bitter. Chocolate is minimal, as is the coffee. I'm getting just full-bodied malts. Not complex, but delicious.

M- Thick, biting carbonation. Surprisingly wet finish.

O- Good, not great. I'd love to have it again on tap. Pelican Pub I'll be visiting!

A - Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a one-finger, light brown head of foam. It left sudsy trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled very roasty with coffee, chocolate and molasses notes.

T - It tasted of dark chocolate, rich roasted coffee and burnt molasses. Subtle piney bitterness, too.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a clean finish.

O - This is a really good stout. I hope to find more brews from Pelican.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours pitch black color with a nice 2 finger dense tan head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Some good spotty lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big milk chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, coffee, molasses, toast, light fruitiness, and light herbal hops. Very nice and pleasant aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, caramel, toast, toffee, light char, and light herbal hops. Decent amount of roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, caramel, light char, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Great flavor balance and complexity; and good malt sweetness to bitterness balance. Medium carbonation and body; with a very nice creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent export stout. Great roasted flavor balance and robustness; and quite smooth to drink. Really enjoyable.

Bomber purchased from Whole Foods in Pearl, Portland, OR.

Pours a very pleasant deep black-brown, with a very frothy and persistent head of mocha. Lacing is punchy and bubbly, but sticks well. Body is firm. Looks very good indeed.

Chalky cocoa on the nose, with a hint of carbonic bite to it that lessens its impact. Roasted notes come through with a touch of bland husk and char to it. There's not significant depth, but it's pleasant.

Taste is nice, and suits the style well. It's charred, dry and crispy, with a very pronounced roast. Malt sweetness is muted, leaving the roast to really come out strongly—that's what I want from an export stout, and this delivers. Finish is bone-dry. Almost puckering. That's powerful stuff.

Feel is dry and light on the finish, but with enough power to support the flavours at the start.

Yeah, I'll pay that. That's really powerful and unapologetic, and it works as it is. I can imagine you could make an imperial version of this that I'd enjoy more, but this is under no qualms about what it's trying to do, and for that it's successful.

Pours black with a three finger brown head that leaves some sheets of lacing and holds a nice thick cap.

Aroma is musty cardboard, hints of cocoa, dark fruit, and roasted malt. Moderate strength.

Flavor is roasted malts, some chocolate, a bit of coffee and dark fruit, cardboard, mineral notes, minimal alcohol.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, creamy, soft carbonation.

This beer wants to be good, but is falling short with some apparent oxidation issues. Flavor is OK...aroma is not...

Dark dark brown. Almost black. Forms a thin dark tan head that sticks around. Some light lacing. Aroma is roasted malts and coffee with a metallic note to it. 22oz bottle with "1" on the top (maybe indicating 2011?) poured into oversized wine glass.

A: Half an inch of tan, thick, creamy head, which is pretty uneven around the glass– thicker in some places than in others. Lots of lacing with big bubbles in it, great looking all around.

S: A rich chocolaty smell really dominates things at the beginning, and is quickly joined by the aroma of toasty, roasted malts– there's just a hint of a burnt character to them. Complementary coffee, smoke, and earthy (maybe even slightly piny) hops add depth.

T: Big, roasty, bitter flavor controls things here, accented nicely by the chocolate which has elements of both dark chocolate and cocoa. Coffee, vanilla, licorice, and a subtle, earthy hop bitterness all supplemental.

M: Crisp body; lighter than I expected considering the ABV but contributes to a lasting, dry finish that really brings some of the bitter flavors of the beer through. Smooth and moderately carbonated.

O: My glass went down pretty quickly, and considering that I don't have easy access to this beer wish that hadn't been the case. Will have to resist the urge to buy this at the expense of other, brand new beers next time I have the chance to pick some up.

22oz w/ "10" handwritten on cap, I think October 2011. Into a snifter. Pours a nice deep black w/ a thick crackly mocha head that settles pretty quickly to a thin film.

Aroma is dark, bitter roasted malt and rich chocolate. Some dark fruits too.

Taste is highly bitter and roasty, but somehow also dry and drinkable.

Mouthfeel is smooth and dry. Vanishes off the palate, leaving just a slight bitter aftertaste.

Overall a really solid, if not especially complex, stout from Pelican. Closest I think I've come to a "session stout."

A: Pitch black, with a thick tanned foam that stays fluffy for a long time. very nice.

S: very faint whiff of roasted coffee, caremel,

T: mix of roasty malt, some prune, some tartness. It finishes with a lingering coffee-like flavor. slight alcohol warmth after several sips.

M: not too viscous, but oily enough. feels very light when 7% alcohol is considered.
