Special Thanks to Irish763 for sending this one over to me. This beer poured out as a beautifully clear gold color with a fluffy white head on top. The retention and lacing are very good on this beer. The smell of this beer is incredible... I can pick up some of the freshest and juiciest citrus aromas. Packed with orange, some peach and grapefruit all come together on the nose with some subtle malt. The taste of the beer gives off lots of citrus flavors as well. It's very refreshing. The mouthfeel is light bodied it has a smooth feel to it with a very nice dry finish. Overall, this is excellent. I enjoy this beer a lot. Looking forward to have the rest of my 4 pack soon.

Canned 09/20/12. Tulip glass.
A: Pours light gold, with two fingers of Orange Julius-like, dense off white head. Leaves behind some intricate lacing and displays good retention. Looks very appetizing.
S: Like smelling orange juice concentrate, pretty concentrated aroma but far from overwhelming (if that makes sense).
T: Pretty pronounced orange on the front end, a hint of greenness/vegetal/spiciness, transitioning into floral notes. Tasty. Leaves sort of an ephemeral bitterness long after the taste has disappeared and your mind began to wander to other things.
M: Medium-full body and light carbonation.
O: Very tasty, pretty drinkable. There's something about wet hop ales which I find fatiguing, but that's not unique to Wet.

A- Light white head that laces glass nicely. Beer is golden/amber color.
S-Citrus and earthy, sweet hop aroma.
T-Malt sweetness gives way to fresh and smooth fresh hop taste. Excellent.
M-Medium carbonation and body
O- Excellent fresh hopped beer from Surly. Different from their usual bitter hop style that everyone has come to know and love. I just wish this stuff wasn't almost $20 a 4 pint pack.

2012 Version, out of a pint glass. Canned on 10/1/2012
A- A nice golden amber color, very clear and crisp. A light white head forms when pouring, good lacing and retention.
S-Mostly piney hop resins with some malty sweetness blended in. I get some touches of some tropical fruit, mango/pinnapple.
T- Smooth and malty at first, with some touches of piney hops coming through after a few seconds. Then comes this big resinous hoppy aftertaste. The initial flavor is quite nice, however I found the aftertaste to be too resinous and not very well balanced.
M- Aside from the overly resinous lingering flavor, the mouthfeel is quite nice. Good body and carbonation, but the aftertaste is a bit much.
O- Overall I had some high expectations for this beer and have to say I was a bit let down. The garlicy-resinous aftertaste is just overboard and too much for the initial flavor. I could see this working with a different hop, but the simcoe didnt really do it for me. Not a bad IPA, but I wont go overboard trying to get more.

16 oz. can poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint Glass. Liquid is somewhere between brown and orange, sort of a gasoline color, maybe slightly darker. There is a nice fluffy white head with tiny bubbles that work their way up to the brim of the glass. The head takes forever to go away and a film stays on the top the whole session. This one took a while to pour out. The clarity is absolutely perfect in every aspect. This is an amazing looking beer, a perfect representation of an IPA in my opinion. Also, the can is pretty cool looking, I like the light green and it looks like a can shaped hop, if only...that'd be awesome.
Smell is good. I've had a few wet hop style beers that are a little underwhelming, this isn't one of them. This is plenty hoppy. It has floral, earthy, and yeasty hints, while at the same time having plenty aromas of tropical fruit, citrus, and pine.
Taste is probably a slight step up from the smell. There is some initial sweetness. Like the smell it has some earthy tones as well. Decent balance between the sweetness and bitterness though. The hops come out at you give some citrus and earthy pine flavors. Sweetness from the malt backbone isn't strong, but it evens things out nicely, finishes with a sharp hop flavor and a little earthy from the yeast.
Mouthfeel is very good. Lighter bodied than I expected. Tries to work it's way towards a medium mouthfeel, but it really has a light one. Excellent carbonation level that is decently balanced. It has a nice light feel with a nice sharp, clean, bitter finish. Drinkability is excellent, perfect on a hot day, but I'll take it in the fall. Nice job Surly, thanks again Noah for sending this one!

16oz can dated 10/04/2012 poured into DFH chalice.
Straw-gold elixir, 2-finger rocky head, plenty of lacing remains throughout the tasting.
Very pleasing tropical, citrus fruits co-mingling with earthy pine.
Glorious, smooth hop bitterness, more pine at the back end but complex: citrus, earthy, dank hop resin. Wonderful taste.
Medium body, resinous, a bit slick.
Well done. Nice change from the Citra-heavy brew of 2011.

Reviewing the Surly Wet from Surly Brewing Company out of Minnesota. According to the beer's description, "2,400 lbs of hops picked freshly in Oregon and shipped to Minnesota immediately. We brewed this beer three days later." Last year's batch (2011) was made entirely with Citra hops. This year's batch was made with Simcoe hops only.
Score: 93
Can is from September 24, 2012. HUGE thanks to fan of the blog Mathew Schraufnagel for hooking me up with a few four packs of this wonderful nectar. Served in a Founders tulip and enjoyed on 10/15/12.
Appearance: Pours a very clean, bright and translucent honey-orange color that reminds me a lot of blind pig. Three-plus fingers of frothy cream colored head off the pour settles to a bubble ring around the glass and clump of head in the middle. Nice soapy lacing, but mediocre retention -- though what sticks around really sticks around. 4/5
Smell: Earthy, "dirty" tangerines, dank grass and pineapple. Faint caramel in the background. 4/5
Taste: Super fresh, earthy citrus and bitter, "dirty" and grassy hops! There's a nice hoppy bite upfront mellowed out by sweet tropical citrus on the back end. The hoppiness seems somewhat confined to the center of the tongue. Resinous pine sap, pineapple, and "earthy"-but-zesty orange. Sweet caramel malt backbone. The caramel mostly comes out towards the finish. Quite balanced and tasty. There's a faint "spiciness" towards the finish too. Surprisingly balanced in flavor. 4.25/5
Mouthfeel: Lighter side of medium bodied with light-medium carbonation. Super oily and slick on the palate. Towards the bitter end of bittersweet. 4.5/5
Overall: Delicious, but I have a suspicion that last year's all Citra batch was even better...I drank this side by side with Broo Doo last week and I preferred the Broo Doo.
Recommendation: Worth drinking, but not worth seeking out at its price point.
Pairings: Thai food.
Cost: $16 for a four pack of 16 oz cans.

Poured from a 16oz can into a tulip.
A: Pours a golden orangish color with a nice 2finger whitish head. Moderate amount of retention and fair amounts of lacing.
S: Smells very earthy with a hint of floral and citrus.
T: Fairly close to the nose. Has an interesting almost funk on the front, evolves to a bit of malt sweetness and pine bitterness. Finishes very citrusy and floral that lasts for a few seconds.
M: Light to medium body, medium carbonation.
O: Overall, my first "Wet" beer and I must say its a very interesting yet pleasant flavor and drink-ability. I guessed this was made with simcoe hops before I saw it on here and it's definitely apparent. At any rate, great beer, I will be seeking this out next year.

Big white head and big lacing on a light golden head. Very fresh and drinkable. Leafy minty, hops in the finish that are moderately acidic but also well balanced with spice. Smooth mouthfeel otherwise. Look forward to next year's hops.

Thanks to Rutager again, the guy is unreal.
A: 1" cream coloured head that left a nice lacing over cloudy amber liquid.
S: Apple juice, lemonade and hibiscus flowers.
T: Lemon, hibiscus, grass and grapefruit in the finish.
M: Thick viscosity and a medium level of carbonation.
O: A gorgeous beer with a very unique taste profile. Very full mouth feel and it goes down extremely easy.

A- Pours a gold yellow orange color, with a good very foamy and frothy head. White head goes as high as you let it.
S- Very pungent, fresh hop smell, christmas tree, dank smell, fresh cut grass smell, very very interesting smell.
T- Taste is very similar to the nose, very hoppy, yet in a flavorful way, not an overly bitter beer, but very very fresh and natural tasting.
M- Very well balanced, lingering flavor left on the tongue, very good.
O- Great IPA, very very unique, hard to put into words, but damn good.

A huge thank you to Steasy66 for getting this to me in record time ...only to be delayed on the last leg of its travel by a couple weeks. No matter, it's in my glass now and looking like the real deal.
Appearance. Pours a very rich looking, clear yellow gold with just a little amber. Two fingers of thick, close to white head forms and sloooowly settles to a rocky cap leaving a ton of sticky lace.
Smell. Oh man, fresh, FRESH, grassy and citusy hops, pineapple, fresh Christmas tree, some nice toasty caramel malts are there, but oh man those hops!!!
Taste. Just an awesome range of hop flavours right from the start. Herbal and grassy, some bitter grapefruit rinds, a little pine sap, it's all there, baby. A little sweetness from the toasted caramel malts balances the bitterness, but it's only a little. Outstanding. Lingering grassy, herbal bitterness.
Mouthfeel. Medium+ body, below medium carbonation.
Overall. Wow, I had big expectations for this one, and it didn't let me down. Thanks again, Steasy66 for the killer box.

16 oz. tallboy can poured into a becker pint glass. Canned on 9/25/12 and enjoyed 10/11/12
Pours a golden amber with some orangish hues topped with a fluffy and sticky two and a half finger white head. Good retention and splotchy, sticky lacing all around the glass. Strong smell of pine sap, grapefruit rind and citrus on the nose. Opens with a touch of sweet citrus joined suddenly by bitter rind, strong pine notes, a hint of honey like sweetness as the malt joins in midpalate and finish dry and extremely bitter with a blast of pine and grapefruit rind. Slick, oily, and resinous, medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. The wet hops are certainly the star of the show in this brew and there isn't much between your tongue and their oily, sticky bitterness. An excellent wet hop West Coast-style IPA.

16oz can thanks to biniek13! Poured into Founders snifter.
A- Pours a translucent orange copper color with about 2-3 fingers of fluffy white head that has great retention and leaves layered lacing. Nice carbonation.
S- Fresh pine, dank citrus hops, grapefruit, hop oil, some honey caramel malts. A little bit above average aroma strength, especially when the can was first cracked.
T- Pine, oily hops, citrus, lemon, honey, some light caramel malts hiding in the background, finishes with a very light bitterness and a very nice lasting light lemon pine aftertaste. Very well balanced and definitely a great finish.
M- Medium bodied, slightly oily- almost similar to Heady Topper, extremely easy to drink, nice carbonation.
O- This was definitely a fantastic world class IPA. Not the best I've had, but definitely up there. Very glad I had the chance to try this. I would definitely drink this often if I could. If you like IPAs this is definitely something you should try.

Huge thanks to Penguin3200 for this crazy hookup. 2012 vintage.
Appearance: Clear, deep, dark gold. Head is a pillowy white. Massive, sticky, chunky, and rocky. Drops to a minimal cap and small collar. Mega sticky lacing. Chunks stick to the glass. Moderate carbonation keeps things moving.
Smell: Dank herbal pine. So much oily resin. Some pushes of grapefruit rind. Huge pine. Needles, resin, oils, its all there. Some mint. Malts are mildly bready with some lingering caramel sweetness. Super dank. Mild roasted edge. Some tropical fruit as well, tangerines mostly. Hop leaf. Clean and herbal.
Taste: Herbal deliciousness. Pine. Resin, needles. Grapefruit flesh married with tangerines. Mild floral element. Some mint as well. Mild malt presence brings some caramel sweetness to the background. Minor roasted malts. Some breadiness. Cracker snap. Dank and pine. Incredibly clean. Loaded with fresh hop oils. Leafy. Lingering pithy bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation. Some minor dryness. Body runs right down the middle of perfectly medium. Slight creamy smoothness.
Overall: This is wet hop magic.
Delicate and absurd hops. Drinks incredibly well. Tons of flavor with that signature Surly brashness. Loaded with hop oils and pure dankitude. Easily on of the best beers in an already stellar lineup.

Canned on 10-01-12.
Received in a trade from an awesome BA arniepnminne.
Poured into a pint glass from a pint can.
Pours a nice golden color that is clear and has some copper edges. There is a nice ecru colored head that is creamy and dense.
Starts out with tons of fresh hop aroma. Grassy, herbal and dank with some nice tropical fruit notes as well. Some grapefruit and tangerine notes mixed in with some bready malt on the backend. There is also some nice slight sweet grain notes.
Flavor is fresh and dank! Very very dank. Nice piney notes and grassy notes as well. Some earthy bready grain is also present. There is also some nice citrusy notes present but these are not too intense. There is some good bready malt notes and some slight sweetness in this brew. Very nice brew. Mouthfeel is very nice. Crisp and refreshing but still slightly resinous and sticky.
Im glad I got to try this. Very delicious IPA. Dank and piney but with some good fruit notes also.

Blown away when this one showed up last week, part of some awesome extras from laymansbeerfan...
Canned 9/20 and poured into a New Belgium Globe.
A: Pours a lovely gold, moderately hazy as you would expect from a beer with this many fresh hops...hefty amount of white head with lots of soft fluffy lacing rings.
S: Hop-forward nose, pretty brilliant this fresh...I get a good amount of piney dankness as well as hints of earthiness but there is definitely some fruitiness and citrus notes which I didn't expect from the the Simcoe...resiny herbal notes and fresh flowers as well...and honestly, a bit of biscuit too, which surprised me as well. Lot going on here.
T: The hops are upfront again but are pleasant as the Simcoe isn't overwhelming in astringency...there are notes of pungent flowers, pithy grapefruit, faint but present malt, and sweeter fruit notes too.
MF: Creamier medium body with good bitterness and adequate carbonation. No complaints here.
O: Really nothing bad to say about this one at all. Good Simcoe showcase, and quite drinkable. Having a two-week-old can of this is just outstanding, can't thank Aaron enough. Cheers man!

Pour: Clear copper orange with a finger and a half off white, dense, fluffy head. Leaves moderate lacing, and forms a film on top of the body.
Smell: Big burst of oranges and citrus come out, followed by a dank resin. Nice light caramel sweetness, to honey in the back.
Taste: Wow. I don’t know how to classify the taste here… it’s more than just fantastic grapefruit. The more, I think about it, the citrus character here is best described as blood orange. A dank pine continues here, followed by a biscuit to caramel sweetness.
Mouthfeel: Pretty bitter and slick with hop oil. Juiciness is definitely there. Nice lingering bitterness.
Overall: My first wet hop IPA, and a fantastic one at that. This was delicious. I look forward to having this again next year!

16 oz. can poured into a Manchester United pint glass. Thanks to copyguyadam for this a four pack of this long-time want.
Appearance - Clear golden body with a nice white head. Never full dissipates. Nice layer of foam throughout the drink and distinct rings of lace around the inside of the glass.
Smell - Strong simcoe. Garlicky. Good dose of pine. Grapefruit comes through in the end. As much as I don't love simcoe hops, this is an extremely clean simcoe hop aroma.
Taste - Same simcoe hop flavor. Pine and garlic and a shade of grapefruit come through. Malt is a touch biscuity but barely perceptible compared to the hops. As it warms a touch of sweetness kisses the palate, but it's all hops throughout. Finishes the slighest bit bitter.
Mouthfeel - So easy to drink, even if you don't love simcoe. Well carbonated without being spritzy. The sweetness hardly makes it heavy. Medium bodied and a 16 ounce can is gone in an instant.
Overall - Perfect hop balance, even if it's the wrong hop. Stop with the 100% simcoe beers! Even so, most breweries don't manage to make this good of a simcoe IPA. My wife said, "Whoa" when she first tried it. She is the pickiest of IPA drinkers. Must be a good beer.

Enjoyed fresh one day after canning. Appearance is typical IPA burnt orange almost amber. Noticed a good amount of carbonation and a thick frothy pillow like head that stays around for a good while. The aroma has hints of lemon like citrus and some pine. The taste is best described with one word... resinous. There is some citrus rind in the background, but resinous pine dominates. Overall I think this IPA is much more one dimensional than the previous reviews would indicate. The flavor profile is super hoppy and resinous without much else going on in my opinion. Definitely a good tasty brew and if resinous is your thing I would definitely reccomend trying to get your hands on this elusive beer.

2012 batch review. 1 week after being canned
Reviewed out of can. Smell is boozy wet floral/pine hops. Taste is a slick earthy pinecone, mossy, wet, and dank. Caramel white bread malt backbone. Feel is fantastic: drinks like a fine lager, but with a medium fullness, and no offensive slickness.
Even though I preferred the 2011 version, this stands on it's own as great as well.

a beautiful clean amber pour, visible carbonation, 2 fingers of off-white creamy head causing lots of sticky lacing.
smells of grapefruit, pine, honey, grass.
a very vegetable-like taste up front.. like raw broccoli almost. very grassy, earthy, citrusy. lots of grapefruit and a spicyness created by the hops that make this beer amazing. sweet malty backbone balances out the earhty bitterness of it all.
mediu body, medium carbonation, very creamy and rich for an ipa.

A: Clear golden orange with a half finger head that settles into small wisps atop the beer. Only a little lacing.
S: Bright citrus hops, with a light earthiness underneath. Orange and light grapefruit particularly come through.
T: Orange citrus and a stinging bitterness mid-sip yield to a light bitterness in the finish, with hints of pale malt poking in sporadically. This beer really allows the fresh hops to shine. And shine they do.
M: Thin to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Works for the style, but it does seem a touch thin.
O: Surly Wet is an awesome beer that really lets the hops star. Super fresh and bright. A beer that I'm excited to have again!

16 oz can courtesy of Fiver29... 2012 version.
Pour is cloudy orange with a big white head.
Aroma is great - sweet fruits with an underlying bit of resin. It has the potential to be a little sweet but it's pleasant anyway.
The flavor is flat and doesn't quite match up with the aroma. Slight pine and sweet, it lacks body and carbonation.
As noted above, the soft carbonation is fine but the body is too thin.
A good beer, but would have liked more hop flavor and a drier beer.

Canned on 9/20/12, so nine days ago. Poured into an Irish Tulip Glass.
Appearance: Hazy golden straw color with an eggshell white head. Looks very pillowy and will hopefully leave good lacing (it did).
Aroma: Can definitely smell the Simcoe hops but really not as powerful of an aroma as I was expecting. Hop juicyness, melon, and grapefruit in the nose along with a little grain.
Taste: Oh yeah, this one is good! Completely hop dominated but lets a little grain flavor through which helps balance the palate. Right up there with the juiciest IPAs I've ever had. That grapefruit and melon aroma comes through nicely in the taste. Not all that bitter at first but decently tongue biting in the finish. Not even a hint of that 7.5% abv.
Mouthfeel: Very smooth and inviting. Medium bodied and highly drinkable.
Final Thoughts: A near perfect beer. Leave it to Minnesota to make one of the best West Coast IPAs in the country. I tend to think that Surly is a little overrated (due mostly to the high price point and the "we're better than you" attitude), but their seasonal options always beat the competition in flavor and drinking experience in my opinion. Get it if you can find it!
