Let me first say i got to try this beer last year and it was AMAZING! Surly has chosen to forcus on the "Simcoe" hops this year rather than the "Citra" hops they used last year, im excited about this "simcoe" are one of my favs but so are "citra"! all i'm hopin is that it has the same mouth feel as it did last year...that of a "mouthwatering" effect as you drink it!! I've had a ton of i.p.a.'s in the last year (singles, doubles, triples, black.. and even other "wet" hopped) but i have never had another beer that made my mouth water like this one did last year. also Surly screwed a lot of fans of their beer over on this one. I work at a liquor store, people (my co workers and I included) have been waiting a loooong time for this, we preordered 10 cases of this glorious brew waited two extra day to reciecve and FINALLY at 2:20 pm today we recieved our shipment (which we found out unbeknownst to us was/is "allocated") 3 whole cases! WTFrog Surly?!?!? i understand the "Simcoe" hops may be harder to come by but i dont wonder with "surly's" (Our Sh!t dont stink, we are better than every1 else's) attitude if this is not just a marketing trick/ploy/gimmick to make their already high in demand beers even more crazed over...so here it is....
appearance: good 2 inch foamy white head, clear lighter medium gold, some bubbles not too many but can see some carbonation.
smell:magnificently hoppy! wow! some maltyness apparent smells a little earthy, not much sweetness here, but smells delish....
taste: YOWZA! an immediate SHOCK to the entire palate, not just the tongue or the back of the throat but THEE WHOLE THING! waiting for it....waiting.... DANG! no "mouthwatering" effect on the palate! :( i was REALLY looking forward to that!!! oh well... has great hoppiness to it not overwhelming but almost! not bitter, not floral or citrusy but like in the nose "earthy" hops hangs on the palate.
try this if you are a hop head and if u can find it ! (good luck! thanks surly...ya JERKS!)

A- Light golden color, medium low carbonation
S- Nose will be slightly different each year due to different hops, but the common theme is REALLY fresh hops. Fresh cut grass, leaves, vegetation along with the citrusy hop profile
T- This is THE best fresh hop beer ive ever had, and Im a huge hop head. Its over the top fresh while not overly bitter and still being over the top hoppy. The fresh hops really come through. There is just enough malt and sweetness to hold up the hops. Definitely a hop centric beer for the hop heads in us. The closest beer to it is fresh Heady.
M- Just enough body/malt/sweetness to hold the beer together for the hops. A medium-light bodied IPA.
O -I go out of my way for this every year and will do so again. This is tied for my favorite beer from surly. (its tied with Moe's Bender, which is Oaked Coffee Vanilla Bender which only makes it to very limited releases)
