Draft at Als of Hampden served in a snifter from a nitro blend tap. The brew appears black in color with a finger of very light colored tan head. A full wall of lace sticks to the glass as the cap receeds.
The smell is strong with barrel presence: oak, vanilla and caramel sweetness is upfront that blends into tangy alcohol. As it warms up, it gets more roasty with some fruity to floral hop quality.
The taste is super strong with barrel presence. Vanilla, caramel, oak and a bit of raw wood interplay with roasty burt grain like coffee and bitter chocolate/char.
This is a medium bodies brew with a modest amount of carbonation. This was a very surprising and enjoyable beer. I am typically not a huge fan of american black ales but this one is smooth and like an imperial porter with an extra kick. The alcohol, while evident, is very well integrated. Worth checking out.
