This beer poured a reddish gold color and formed a nice foamy white head that left circular lace as it subsided. Some carbonation was present. An aroma of malt, with a strong citrus-grapefruit aspect which is probably the main hops aroma being used in this IPA. A flavor of malt, hops and citrus. A rather bitter citrus finish to it. Really not one of the better IPAs around that I have tried. It's possible it is going for a more English style than American.

Sampled at From The Vine monthly beer tasting Oct 13th, 2003: This beer is a dark copper color with a medium white head. Thin lacing. Hops and citrus in the nose. Medium-bodied and with a strong peppery hops presence. The finish is tart grapefruit and more hops. I normally like a lot of hops in an IPA but the hops flavor was on the spicy side in this brew.

Appearance: Hazy copper hues with an almost non-existent haed. Some tiny bubbles flowing upward.

Aroma: Sweet malt/alcohol and hoppiness explode. Hops dominate.

Taste: Hops, hops, and more hops! Bitterness up-front, middle, and finish. Some malty backbone and alcohol present. Nice grapefruit tones dominate the finish.

Mouthfeel: Coating mouthfeel, with the powerful hops giving a dry, crisp finish.

Drinkability: Overall, a pleasing IPA. Quite a standard American IPA. Nothing special, but would try again.

22 oz. bottle, pours a hazy golden-amber color, minimal carbonation, has a small off-white head that does cling to the glass. Fresh strong hoppy pine and grapefruit aromas, nice hoppy resiny grapefruit flavor, has a decent malt balance, medium bodied with full and almost syrupy mouthfeel, finishes with a nice hop bitterness.

22 oz. Bottle

Appearance: This beer filled my glass with a chill-hazed, amber-orange glow. The white, three-finger head settled down slowly and became dense and fluffly doing so. There was a ton of lace left on the side of the glass by the layer of foam that remained floating on top of the beer.

Smell: The aroma was dominated by sharp, citrus hops. Underneath this dwelt a bready, roasted malt smell. As the beer really warmed up, the citrus smell developed into more of a sickly, rotten citrus smell. This didn't detract from my enjoyment too much, though.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a little bit of a bite. Surprisingly, this beer was a slightly chewy in the sides of the mouth.

Taste: This beer was all hops. From the very start all the way to the finish, a strong citrus and slightly herbal hops bitterness dominated the flavor. While the Hazed and Infused had a lot of hops flavor, but relatively low bitterness, this one had a bitterness that I could feel in my jaw. Well into the finish, a light malt sweetness emerged, with a hint of roasted malt arising well into the aftertaste.

This might not be the most balanced brew in the world, but it was pretty darn good, especially if you are a hop head like me. However, it would have scored higher if there was more of a malt presence. I'm surprised that Rockies Brewing Company released two IPAs in a row in their Looking Glass series, but I'm not one to complain. ;-)

This ale, from the Looking Glass Series, pours a hazy peach color with an off-white head. Trails of lace reside on the glass while a thin head remains throughout the brew. Nose is dominated by citric hops, with big notes of grapefruit and not much else. Flavor features additional notes of citric hops and a similarly big grapefruit profile. Not overly balanced, but tasty just the same. Truly a hop head's ale, but one that could use some more malt for balance. It's still quite enjoyable, however; refreshing and easy to drink. A better than average, hoppy IPA overall.
