This is my first experience with bourbon barrel beer, and I have to say, it is quite enjoyable. Nearly pitch black with a tan head that dissipates rather quickly. the lacing coated the sides of my glass and sank slowly back into the black lagoon that is The Dogfather. Aromas of Vanilla, bourbon, espresso, oak and smoke are definately present. Maybe a little black licorice too. It is heavy on the palate with low carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. vanilla, oak, and dark chocolate on the palate with a warming espresso finish. The alcohol is reletivley undetectable considering the 11% ABV. It is definately something I will pick up again. Highly recommended.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.
A dog-themed beer in a dog-themed glass. Done. Anyway, this stuff pours a dark black-brown topped by a more-than-healthy few fingers of sandstone foam. The nose comprises dark cocoa powder, light coffee powder, and a strong, yet vague, sense of fruit, primarily black cherry. This does not bode well... The taste confirms my anxiety as dark chocolate-covered black cherries dominate my tongue, with a small bit of wood and watered-down whiskey flowing in a tiny rivulet in the distance. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, I can't quite conclude that this stuff is infected, per se, but it certainly tastes similar to other infected stouts I've had. It may just be that this stuff ages piss-poorly, but I have no way of knowing how old this bottle is, so it's all just speculation. What isn't speculation is the strong fruit flavor and thin body, making this stout completely unenjoyable. Even as a sour stout it fails, frankly, as it's more metallic than tart. Shame, really...

Not bad, the Dogfather is a good starting place for someone getting into BA brews. It's fairly easy to get and is not a bad brew. If you want to try a BB stout or need a BA fix...here it is. I enjoyed it and as it warmed it became more mellow and drinkable. Poured a small head, the aroma could be more pronounced. I could taste the barrel but it's weak. Would I purchase it again, nah but it was worth trying.
Bottom Line: Worth trying.

Consumed April 9th, 2013 in a Klokke Roeland snifter.
Beer pours a deep, clear brown with mahogany highlights. A two finger tan head forms and provides decent sheeting throughout the drink-down, which was not a very long time (details below).
Aroma was oddly tame for a bourbon-barrel aged stout; just a little hint of bitter chocolate.
Flavor is just awful. No bourbon apparent at all. Sour, metallic coffee flavor with some cocoa powder and woody bitterness at the end. Chaotic melange never finds its way.
Mouthfeel is somewhat on the thin side with a touch of creaminess. For a beer with this ABV,it was underwhelming.
This $10.00 bomber wound up going mostly down the drain. Undrinkable.

Poured from 22 ounce bomber into perfect pint glass.
Pours dark black with tick brown foam. Hearty looking. Rich chocolate malt nose. Espresso too,. Vanilla as well. Taste is a hearty full coffee chocolate blend with a whisky background. Quite boozy. Whisky flavor builds as the beer warms. packs a wallop, with a lot of flavor.
