Less a typical beer bar than a restaurant proper (or even a cocktail or wine bar), the Rue deserves a beer-related local reputation because: (a) even since its earliest days (at least those in the 80s that Im familiar with), the Rue has always maintained several rare beer offerings for its time, including some of the first Ayinger Celebrator and Sam Smiths in the state; (b) there is a side room bar/bistro area that has long carried these beers in a low-key atmosphere (though the entire restaurant is relaxed); and primarily today, (c), now with six taps all devoted to great beer, currently: DFH 60 Min. IPA, DFH Raison DEtre, Magic Hat Saint Goötz, Allagash White, Sam Adams Boston Lager, Bass Ale. They also stock approx. 14 bottles of varying interest.
The Rue De L'espoir is a well-established Providence restaurant with respected, fresh regional menu items, not entirely French, with notable menu items during all meal times, including popular breakfasts and prix fixe values.
I just stopped in the other day for several beers, a great onion soup with their very fine fresh hot bread basket and a cheese plate. Just right with a few glasses of DEtre.

Visited on 5/28/2008. Had the BLT for lunch ($9.99) with hand cut potato chips that were out of this world, as well as an Allagash White. Rue had a nice charming bistro quality, as well as a pretty decent tap selection. In addition to the Allagash, they had Bluepoint Toasted Lager, DFH 60 minute IPA, Bass, Old Rasputin Imperial Stout and Smuttynose Robust Porter. Didn't explore the bottle selection, but their on-line menu had more than a few craft brews listed. Tap prices were $4.25 for a 16oz. and $5.25 for a 22oz. Not your typical beer bar, but a nice place to visit for a hearty meal. They also have a dollar menu in the bar on mondays from 4:30 to 9:00 which is worth checking out, but you need to order an alcoholic beverage (shouldn't be a problem). Meal prices were a little on the high side, but worth the compromise if you are looking for a nice restaurant with an above average beer selection.
